The strength of the Wolf is the pack.

Proving that to be true, 20 Coupeville High School football players showed up Friday — on a day when there was no school — to help their coaches run a flag football clinic for local children.

The event, put on through the Coupeville Boys and Girls Club, drew 28 participants, said CHS head football coach Brett Smedley.

“We had a great turn out and they had a great time!” he said.

Drawing in both girls and boys on a sunny afternoon, the clinic featured a mix of lessons and fun.

As he continues to build his own program at the high school, Smedley is also reaching out to the sport at other levels.

Getting assistance from a wide range of helpers was invaluable, he said.

“I’d like to thank the Boys and Girls Club, Coupeville Elementary, the CHS Football Team, Coach (Bob) Martin, and Coach (Ryan) King for putting this on!”

The next generation is already here.

Making their debut at halftime of the CHS girls’ basketball game Tuesday night, the youngest members of the Coupeville Boys and Girls Club hoops program made a solid debut.

While they came dangerously close to hitting a basket on the regulation 10-foot hoops, they also displayed some fancy dribbling skills and a very loose interpretation of traveling.

Roving photo man John Fisken caught these photos for us, and, who knows, come back in 10 years and we may have just gotten our first glance at a bevy of future Wolf stars.

Where would the world be without the photo bomb?

It would be a duller, grayer place if every so often you weren’t looking at photos and suddenly noticed that one person in the background doing something completely different from everyone else.

It’s the little cherry on the top of the photographic sundae.

So, as we creep into a Monday, let’s look back at a few of the best captured by ace photog Shelli Trumbull.

P.S. — Click on each photo to enlarge them and bask in the full awesomness.

How do you build basketball success?

One kid at a time, one hoop at a time, one day at a time.

You get the high school stars to give back, their time and their skills, and you build the small moments when a young child looks up at them and says, “That’s what I want to be. Right there.”

Because, years from now, that small child is the high school star, and he or she gives back their time and their skills and a town’s heritage of basketball excellence rolls on.
