Hot finish, cool win

They hadn’t played in nearly three weeks, so they made sure their return was special.

Closing the game on a 7-0 run, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball squad roared from behind on the road Tuesday, upending host Friday Harbor 34-31.

The victory, coming in the Wolves first contest since Dec. 20, lifts the CHS young guns to 2-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 3-4 overall.

Tuesday’s clash was a tense back-and-forth affair, and it looked like Friday Harbor was going to pull out the win when it went ahead 31-27 late in the fourth quarter.

But Coupeville, which got points from five different players in the final frame, responded with lock-down defense and some big buckets at the end.

Mahkai Myles and Malachi Somes got the Wolves back to a tie, before freshman Liam Blas and sophomore Davin Houston combined to slam the door shut on the Wolverines.

Blas, working aggressively in the paint, ripped down an offensive rebound with the game knotted at 31-31 and fed Houston for what turned into the game-winning jumper.

Then, after forcing a turnover, the Wolves played keep-away with the ball, before Blas got crunched and sent to the free throw line with only a handful of ticks left on the clock.

The fab frosh arced in one of two to ensure Friday Harbor would have to net a three-ball to force overtime, but the Wolverines never got that final shot off, instead throwing the ball away on the game’s final play.

Riley Lawless led a balanced Wolf offense, banging away for a team-high nine points in the win, while Houston finished with six.

Somes (4), Myles (4), Carson Grove (3), Blas (3), Easton Green (2), Sage Arends (2), and Khanor Jump (1) also scored, with Nathan Coxsey and Kyle McCrimmon also seeing floor time.

It was the first high school point for Jump, another hard-playing freshman.

Free throw struggles haunt Wolf boys

New year, old problem.

The calendar has rolled into 2025, but a season-long cold spell at the free throw line continues to haunt the Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball team.

Way down the road in Wahkiakum Saturday, the Wolves netted just six of 18 at the charity stripe, leaving way too many points on the rim in what became a nail-biting 60-59 loss.

The non-conference defeat, coming against a dangerous foe, drops Coupeville to 2-8 on the season.

Brad Sherman’s squad still has plenty to play for, however, with eight of its next nine games coming against Northwest 2B/1B League rivals.

The Wolves, 1-1 in conference play, travel to Friday Harbor next Tuesday, Jan. 7, before hosting La Conner in a Friday night rumble.

The Wolves return to their own gym Jan. 10 for a major conference rumble with La Conner.

While Coupeville’s win/loss record isn’t what had been hoped for, five of the eight losses have been by single digits.

Heading into the heart of conference play, free throws loom huge.

The Wolves have consistently gotten to the line more than their rivals this season but have largely failed to take advantage of that advantage.

Saturday was a perfect example, with CHS getting to the stripe 18 times, while Wahkiakum only had 10 free throws, netting five.

Coupeville shot 33% at the line, in a contest where one made shot sends the game to overtime, and two gives the visitors a win.

Even with their free throw issues, the Wolves kept the game close until the final moments.

Chase Anderson and Hurlee Bronec combined to score 14 in the first quarter as CHS played its hosts to a 17-17 stalemate.

Down 31-29 at the half, the Wolves surged in the third quarter, with six different players tallying points during a 20-12 run.

That staked Coupeville to a 49-43 lead heading into the fourth, but Wahkiakum put together its own 17-7 streak to turn the tide of the game.

Trailing by four with mere seconds to play, the Wolves got a three-ball from Anderson to slash the deficit to one, but time ran out on the guys in red and black.

Anderson finished with a game-high 23 points, while twin towers Hurlee and Hunter Bronec both banked in 10 points in support.

Landon Roberts (6), Jack Porter (5), Malachi Somes (3), and Camden Glover (2) also scored.

Both of the Battlin’ Bronec Brothers hit personal milestones in the first game of 2025.

With his 10 points, Hunter reaches exactly 150 for his varsity career, while Hurlee cracks the 100-point club, sitting with 107 and counting.

CHS boys nipped in 2024 finale

The encore was a huge leap forward.

Playing for the second time in as many days at Central Washington University, the Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball squad fought hard to the final moments Saturday.

And while the Wolves ultimately fell 53-50 to Kittitas, a non-conference rival with a stellar hoops history, the game was a marked improvement after CHS was routed Friday by Toledo.

Now 2-7 on the season, Coupeville is off until Jan. 4, when it travels to Wahkiakum for another rumble with a non-traditional foe.

Squaring off with Kittitas, a school with two boys’ basketball state titles to its credit, the Wolves never flinched.

Neither team could get the ball to stay in the hoop during the opening quarter, with the Coyotes clinging to a 5-4 lead, but then Coupeville picked up the pace.

Camden Glover splashed home a three-ball as part of a five-point spurt in the second frame, and five Wolves tallied points during a 15-10 surge.

Up 19-15, things looked good for CHS, but Kittitas had an answer of its own, using a 22-15 run in the third quarter to reclaim the lead at 37-34.

Sparked by Dallon Walker, who banged home 15 of his game-high 20 points in the second half, the Coyotes had just enough to hold off Coupeville in a game which remained close through the final buzzer.

The Wolves got scoring from seven different players, with Chase Anderson and Landon Roberts leading the way with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Glover (8), Jack Porter (6), Hunter Bronec (5), Johnny Porter (4), and Hurlee Bronec (4) also hit the bottom of the net, with Malachi Somes rounding out the rotation for Brad Sherman’s squad during the final game of 2024.

Road warriors run into fierce foe

Sometimes you’re the chainsaw, and sometimes you’re the log.

Playing at Central Washington University Friday, the Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball team ended up on the wrong end of that example.

Squaring off with a top-level Toledo squad which put four players into double-digit scoring, the Wolves were swept off the floor 76-30.

The non-conference loss drops Coupeville to 2-6 on the season, but Brad Sherman’s team gets a chance to bounce right back Saturday with a rumble against Kittitas.

The two-game holiday road trip to Eastern Washington is part of an ongoing stretch where the Wolves play seven of nine away from Whidbey.

Toledo, which hails from the rough-and-tumble Central 2B League, jumped out to a quick 16-5 lead Friday, then turned up the heat with a 24-11 tear through the second quarter.

The Riverhawks, who stretched the advantage to 59-23 by the end of the third, dominated in every facet of the game.

Toledo won the three-ball battle 9-3 and hit a crisp 9-10 at the free throw line, while Coupeville finished just 5-14 at the charity stripe.

Hurlee Bronec and Chase Anderson led the way for the Wolves, both rattling the rim for six points, while Hunter Bronec knocked down five.

Malachi Somes (4), Jack Porter (4), Camden Glover (3), and Johnny Porter (2) rounded out the offensive attack, with Carson Field, Davin Houston, Easton Green, and Landon Roberts also seeing floor time.

It was Houston’s varsity basketball debut.

Wolves rumble, but Turks triumph

This one slipped away.

Despite leading for much of the game Friday, the Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball squad couldn’t quite seal the deal.

That allowed visiting Sultan to make off with a 55-47 non-conference victory, running its winning streak to four after opening the season with seven straight losses.

Coupeville heads into the Christmas break with a 2-5 record and will look to kick off its own winning streak with a trip to Central Washington University Dec. 27-28.

The Wolves will play Toledo and Kittitas on their Eastern Washington jaunt, before starting 2025 with trips to Wahkiakum and Friday Harbor, not playing in the CHS gym again until Jan. 10.

Friday’s battle royal with Sultan started in favor of the Wolves, with Johnny Porter knocking down a jumper before Hunter Bronec and Camden Glover buried back-to-back three-balls.

Six different Wolves scored in the first frame as CHS built a 16-9 lead fueled by sharing the ball and playing solid defense.

While the “D stayed strong, Coupeville’s offense went into a bit of a deep freeze after that, with single digit scoring in both the second and third quarters.

Still, the Wolves clung to the lead, holding on to a 23-22 advantage at the half, then getting the first bucket of the second half on a spinning layup from Hurlee Bronec.

Sultan finally grabbed the lead for the first time midway through the third, using a 7-0 tear to get ahead 29-25.

Making the immediate counter, Coupeville went off for its own run, with Chase Anderson hitting a fadeaway and a three-ball before zipping a pass to Hunter Bronec to set-up another trey.

Unfortunately, Sultan had the counter-counter, surging back ahead at 36-32 exiting the third, then holding tough in the fourth.

Anderson banked in a bucket at the shot clock buzzer to cut the lead to 43-38, but the Turks put the game away in dramatic fashion, ripping off four baskets in about 45 seconds to make it 51-38.

The game’s final moments belonged largely to Coupeville, with Anderson outscoring Sultan 9-4 by himself to close the contest. But time stops for no man, and the game clock hit 0:00 too fast for a full comeback.

With his game-high 25 points, Anderson becomes the 66th Wolf boy to crack the 400-point club across the last 108 seasons.

The CHS junior heads to Eastern Washington sitting with 402 career points and counting.

Hunter Bronec banked in eight points Friday to back Anderson, with Hurlee Bronec (5), Glover (3), Jack Porter (2), Johnny Porter (2), and Landon Roberts (2) also scoring.

Malachi Somes rounded out the Wolves to see floor time in the final home game of 2024.
