The action was hoppin’.

Whether it was DeAndre Mitchell floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee or Hunter Downes going all Kill Bill on a hapless foe, the Wolf boys’ basketball players were a photogenic bunch Saturday.

Making the trip to Mount Vernon to catch them in action was travelin’ photo man John Fisken. Powered by all the Diet Coke he could keep down, he snapped the pics above.

The race starts now.

All the non-conference games are done and the next three weeks will decide league championships and playoff berths.

With seven games left on the schedule (three against Chimacum and two each against Port Townsend and Klahowya), this is go time for the Coupeville High school basketball squads.

The Wolf girls’ hoops squad is currently sitting on top of the throne, with all eyes planted on the prize — the first league title since 2002.

The CHS boys have a little bit more work to get done. They have the most wins of any of the four schools, but none have come against conference foes.

The up-to-the-moment standings:

Do you smell smoke? Cause someone is on fire!

Racing past host Mount Vernon Christian 58-47 Saturday, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball squad captured its fifth win in its last six games.

Using a mix of stellar defense (the Wolves zipped away with 20 steals) and electrifying long-range shooting (eight three-balls hit nothing but the bottom of the net), CHS surged to 5-6 on the season.

“The recent emergence of the long ball has given our offense a healthy jolt of energy,” said Wolf coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh. “We led wire to wire.

“These kids are playing for one another, with 100% conviction and maximum effort and having fun doing it,” he added. “I love to watch them play.”

Coupeville spread the offense around, with DeAndre Mitchell surging to the front of the pack with an 18-point, seven rebound, seven steal, two blocked shot performance.

Half of Mitchell’s points came via the long ball, as the junior rained down three treys.

Hunter Smith and Brian Shank both dropped in a pair of three-point bombs, while Luke Merriman chipped in with one of his own.

Smith hit for 10 points, while Gabe Wynn (8), Dante Mitchell (7), Shank (6), Desmond Bell (4), Merriman (3) and Hunter Downes (2) rounded out the offensive explosion.

Smith made off with six steals while Dante Mitchell nabbed four.

Merriman and Smith each had three assists, with Wynn hauling in four boards.

The young Wolves will put their three-game winning streak on the line Wednesday, Jan. 21 with a home game against Chimacum.

The Coupeville JV is 2-0 in Olympic League play entering that contest, with wins over Klahowya and Port Townsend.

“I hate double headers for this very reason. Bad enough playing early in the morning.”

Coming off a huge opening win over a talented Arlington squad that dropped down a division in search of a title, the Coupeville 6th grade boys’ SWISH basketball team ran out of steam in its second game Saturday.

The ensuing 31-24 loss to a tall Friday Harbor squad gave the Wolves a split on the day (they bounced Arlington 31-28) and left coach Pat Kelley with the slight case of the grumbles captured in the opening quote.

Still, Coupeville sits at 2-1 in an ultra-competitive division, with games against Sedro-Woolley and Ferndale up next on the schedule.

The Wolves opened play Saturday firing on all cylinders, shooting out to a 10-2 lead on Arlington.

“They ran into a buzz saw, being a very talented Coupeville squad,” Kelley said.

The game settled into a back-and-forth rhythm after that, with the two teams swapping out leads until Coupeville put the game on ice in the final two minutes.

A bit ragged after a tough game, the Wolves had to hop right back on the floor — it was their only doubleheader of the season — and they struggled in the early going against a fresh Friday Harbor team.

Coupeville rallied late behind Matthew Kelley, Daniel Olson, Jake Mitten and Sage Downes, but time ran out on them.

You have six days to get your affairs in order.

When Wednesday, Jan. 21 rolls around, you’ll need to get off of work early — or just take the whole day off.

Chimacum is headed over to Whidbey for a basketball doubleheader that afternoon (boys’ varsity tips at 3:30, girls at 5:15, while JV goes in reverse order in the middle school gym across the hallway).

It’s the first time the Cowboys will travel to Coupeville for basketball, and both games will figure heavily in the battle for an Olympic League title.

The Coupeville Booster Club is trying to whip up an additional layer of intrigue by calling for a Black Out that night.

To see more about that, just scroll back up to the top photo. No point in me rehashing all that a second time.

I’ve got things to do. Like getting the day off.
