Aram Leyva’s foot is not cooling off any time soon.

The Coupeville Middle School 8th grader racked up his third hat trick of the season Saturday to spark the North Whidbey Deception BU14 soccer squad to a huge win on their home field.

The 3-2 win over Issaquah lifted Whidbey, which has a roster comprised of Oak Harbor and Coupeville players, to 8-3 on the season.

It also set up a winner-take-all show-down for second place in the final North Puget Sound League standings.

The Deception travel to Seattle next Saturday, Dec. 19 to face the Lake Hills Legend (8-1-2) in their season finale, with the victor finishing #2 behind the WS Strikers, who went 11-1.

Whidbey got all the goals they needed from their Wolf sharpshooter.

Leyva banged home a goal in the first half, then matched Issaquah with two more in a wild second half.

Whidbey was playing without several of its Coupeville players (Sam Wynn, Jean Lund-Olsen and James Wood were all out), but those who were healthy made an impact.

Matthew Kelley helped Leyva press the attack, while Jake Mitten split time between sweeper and goalie.

Sage Downes and Michael Laska delivered strong play from the striker position.

The first half was about staying warm. The second half about winning.

Raining down four goals after the break, the North Whidbey Deception boys’ soccer squad routed visiting Mercer Island 5-1 Saturday and kept alive its hopes of finishing in second place in league play.

Playing on a cold, windy (but not wet) day at Ft. Nugent Park, the booters got four of their goals from their Coupeville mercenaries, including a second-half hat trick from Aram Leyva.

Fellow Coupeville Middle School student Matthew Kelley gave the Deception their first goal, slipping in a score while being hammered in front of the net shortly before halftime.

That knotted things back up at 1-1 and after the break, Wolf Jake Mitten was untouchable in goal.

With the lanky CMS 7th grader holding down the fort on defense, Leyva found his touch and obliterated Mercer Island.

With set-up help from Kelley and fellow Wolves Sage Downes and Michael Laska, Leyva ran his season scoring total to 14.

The non-Coupeville contingent got into the scoring column late in the game, when Max Brighton rattled home his second goal of the season to pad the final score.

Now 7-3, the Deception have two games remaining on their schedule.

If they win out, they finish in second place.

There is a slight chance they could tie for the league title, but that would require the current leader to collapse over the final two weeks.

Coupeville players have accounted for 28 of the team’s 34 goals this season, with Kelley (10) hot on Leyva’s heels for the team scoring title.

Desmond Bell

Desmond Bell follows suit on Tuesday.

Two guys, two different sports, two birthdays over two days, too awesome.

Former Coupeville High School soccer star Ryan Freeman, who celebrates his cake day today, and current CHS hoopster Desmond Bell, who hits his milestone Tuesday, have both had a considerable impact on Wolf Nation.

Freeman gets his props for running the soccer pitch like a racehorse, slicin’ ‘n dicin’ and getting his feet on more than his share of loose balls.

Helping to set up big-time goal scorers Abraham Leyva and Sebastian Davis last season, he was one of those unsung players that are so valuable to a successful squad.

One of nine seniors who departed after last spring, Freeman may be gone from the CHS hallways, but he’s far from forgotten.

Bell is still striding across campus and about to kick off his senior year of basketball tonight, when the Wolves open a new season at Meridian.

As a junior, Desmond was one of the more explosive players on the Wolf JV, a little raw, but capable of pulling off big exploits when everything clicked together.

Now, he’s made the jump to varsity, where his quickness and hops should help make the Wolves a hard-attacking team.

As the duo mark their birthdays, we just want to take a moment here at Coupeville Sports to say thank you, for what you’ve done in the past.

Both of you provided plenty of things to write about, and I greatly appreciate it.

Now go celebrate and keep on blazing the same trail of success you’ve been following so far.

Happy birthday, guys!

Matthew Kelley (Pat Kelley photo)

Their fear of the mud is gone.

With rain and muck having long ago overtaken the soccer season, the North Whidbey Deception BU14 soccer squad seems to have finally adapted to the conditions, if Saturday is any indication.

Overcoming the weather, and a pesky South Whidbey Islanders team, the Deception rode a late goal from Coupeville’s Matthew Kelley to an important 2-1 win.

The victory kept the Deception, who are 6-2 this season, in third place in the 11-team North Puget Sound League standings with four games to play.

The squad, which is a mix of Oak Harbor and Coupeville booters, has 18 points, which puts them hot on the heels of the West Seattle Strikers (21) and Lake Hills Legends (19).

North Whidbey has games remaining against Kent (3-3-2), Mercer Island (2-5-1), Issaquah (3-4) and Lake Hills (6-1-1).

Facing off with their Island rivals, the Deception scored first, on a rebound off of a corner kick.

The Coupeville defensive contingent of James Wood, Sam Wynn and Jean Lund-Olson kept South Whidbey shut down for most of the afternoon, while Kelley and Aram Leyva led the assault on the goal.

Kelley’s winning goal came with three minutes to play.

The CMS 7th grader took a pass and shot between South Whidbey defenders, banging home the ball into the right corner of the net.

Whatever home field advantage they had disappeared in the rain.

With Ft. Nugent turned into a mud bowl by a torrential downpour Saturday, the North Whidbey Deception boys’ soccer squad couldn’t stay afloat.

Surrendering three second-half goals while trying to defend a side of the field that had become a pit of grime and despair, the booters fell 4-2 to the Strikers.

Both of North Whidbey’s goals came courtesy of its Coupeville contingent.

Matthew Kelley set up Aram Leyva in the first half for a goal that knotted things at 1-1, before getting his own score later.

Kelley’s goal came courtesy of an assist from fellow Coupeville Middle School 7th grader Jake Mitten.

Up 2-1 at the break, things were looking good, but that changed quickly after the Deception returned to the field.

With every ball disappearing into the muck and mire, the defense was continually frustrated and balls started to slip and slide through the gaps, allowing the visitors to escape with the win.

North Whidbey gets a chance at redemption next Saturday, when it stares down Island rival South Whidbey.
