Have racket, will paddle

His partner, Miles Davidson, blasts a return.

Logan Martin gave himself a nice birthday present.

On the day the Coupeville High School sophomore turned 48 (at least according to his Facebook profile), he teamed with fellow first-year tennis player Miles Davidson to record their first win of the season.

Cruising to a victory at #3 doubles, the duo was part of a cake walk of a day for the Wolf netters, who took longtime foe Friday Harbor out to the shed for a paddlin’.

Winning the non-conference home match 5-0 Thursday, Coupeville lifts its record to 2-10 heading into the final run of the Emerald City League season.

The Wolves return to ECL action Friday, when they travel to Bear Creek, before playing at Seattle Academy Monday, and closing Tuesday at home against The Bush School.

The Tuesday match will be Senior Night, then Coupeville plays in the league tourney Saturday, Oct. 19.

Facing off with Friday Harbor, the Wolves mixed up their lineup a bit, yet still cruised, losing just three games across six total matches.

Nipped, again

This has a familiar ring to it.

When I tell you the Coupeville High School boys tennis team fell 3-2 to visiting Bear Creek Wednesday, you’ll probably respond, “I’ve heard that score before. A lot.”

And you have.

With a thin roster, the Wolves have battled for their life in their second season in the Emerald City League, the toughest 1A tennis conference in the state, and don’t have a lot of wins to show for it this time around.

But when you look at their 1-10 record, also take a moment to realize nearly half their matches have been decided by the slimmest of margins, that familiar 3-2 score.

Wednesday the wins came at #1 singles and #1 doubles, but the third win proved elusive.

Things should get a lot better Thursday, as the Wolves get a one-match reprieve from the ECL, hosting Friday Harbor in a non-conference rumble set to tip off at 3:30 PM.

If we can believe the record-keepers, Friday Harbor has spent much of its season playing themselves, and only themselves.

They currently show a 0-1 record, with that loss coming by a margin of … 3-2.

Racket men kick off busy week

It’s a busy week for the Wolf netters.

Barring any more rain, the Coupeville High School boys tennis team is scheduled to play four matches in the next five days as they hurtle towards the end of the regular season.

While other fall sports still have as much as half their schedule to play, the netters are set to wrap up action Oct. 15, before heading to the Emerald City League championships Oct. 19.

Monday afternoon a depleted Wolf roster was on the courts in Redmond, where they fell 5-0 to Overlake in a match far closer than that score might sound.

Coupeville, now 1-9 on the season, came within a tiebreaker of winning at first and second doubles.

The Wolves, who only have a nine-man roster at full strength, were missing two players Monday, which also meant they ended up forfeiting at #2 singles.

Tasty treats top tense tussle

Flaky dough. Delicate pears. The perfect touch of sweetness, without being cloying.

What? Yes, of course they played tennis Thursday afternoon in Coupeville, and yes, I’ll tell you about it.

But first, a big shout-out to University Prep coaches, who handed out complimentary, crafted-in-Seattle pastries after the match was done.

You sirs, are the real heroes, and the “working press” thanks you.

I may even have to reconsider the whole “bitchin’ and whining about private schools” stance I so love to traffic in.

Maybe. Possibly. We’ll see.

It may take me a while to warm up to schools like King’s and Archbishop Murphy, but U Prep, you had me at “free, delicious pastry.”

Oh, and the tennis match which preceded my sultry taste-bud tango with my unexpected delish dessert? It went about as expected.

U Prep, which is almost always in play for glory at the state tourney, won 5-0 to stay atop the battle for Emerald City League supremacy.

But public school Coupeville, which sits at 1-8 headed into a Friday home match with The Bush School, a team the Wolves beat earlier this season, put up some nice resistance.

Most of it came in two matches – #1 singles and #3 doubles.

U Prep’s top gun, Tyler Wurzer, finished third at the state tourney as a sophomore, and, if anything, his game has just gotten more impressive during his junior campaign.

The Puma pounder slapped winners from every direction, combining big power with uncanny touch, and yet Coupeville’s Drake Borden didn’t go down without delivering some impressive shots of his own.

One point in particular was a big fan-pleaser, as the duo exchanged knockout punches from the baseline.

With Wurzer drifting ever so slightly to his left, Borden lashed a long shot to the deepest, darkest corner in the right, and the ball clipped the last little bit of open space, biting the line, then spinning away into the fence for a winner.

It earned a quick acknowledgement from Wurzer, who smiled ever so slightly, and a big roar from Borden’s loyal rooting section, led by CHS coach Ken Stange, who jumped up and punched the air.

The closest match came at #3 doubles, where first-year players Miles Davidson and Logan Martin, who are still in the trial-run part of their tennis careers, fought back to take the second set and force a match-deciding tiebreaker.

While the young Wolves eventually fell to their more-experienced foes, they did so only after putting in their best performances of the season, with both coming up with sweet work at the net.

Just a volley away

If I haven’t said it before, I’ll say it again – the record is kind of deceptive.

The Coupeville High School boys tennis team, which went through the early part of the season without a full varsity roster, is a work in progress.

Which makes it tough when your netters play in the Emerald City League, a cutthroat, private school-dominated conference which has produced most of the 1A state champions in the last decade.

So, while the scrappy public school Wolves are competitive every time out, as they were Tuesday while losing 3-2 to Eastside Prep in Kirkland, they’ve taken a few dings on the ol’ win/loss record this time around.

Coupeville sits at 1-7 in league play, with home matches coming Thursday (University Prep) and Friday (The Bush School).

The first of those opponents is one of the front-runners for the 2019 team state title, while the latter is win-less this season.

Both times CHS played Eastside Prep this season, they fell by the narrowest of margins.

Tuesday the Wolves got wins from Zach Ginnings, sliding up to play singles for the first time this season, and the doubles duo of James Wood and Mason Grove.

Ginnings was the last man on the court, and won his match by coming out on top in a cut-down tiebreaker as the teams raced impending darkness.
