Zippin’ along!!

Danny Conlisk wins Whidbey honors.

Competing at an eight-team cross country meet at South Whidbey High School Thursday, the Coupeville junior finished 9th out of 105 runners.

Making his top 10 finish even better was he edged out every one of his Falcon training partners, out-leaning South Whidbey’s Michael Cepowski at the line.

Conlisk finished the 5,000 meter course in 18 minutes, 18.94 seconds, while Cepowski ran his home course in 18:19.79.

Cedarcrest’s Grant Van Valkenburg won the race in 16:57.03, spurring the Red Wolves to a team win.

The seven schools from the 1A/2A Cascade Conference were in attendance, while Coupeville’s mini three-man crew also took part.

CHS doesn’t have an active harrier program of its own, so Conlisk and brothers Henry and Sam Wynn train and travel with South Whidbey, but compete in the red and black uniforms of their own school.

Henry Wynn, a senior, finished 38th Thursday, clocking in at 20:13.59, while Sam, a freshman, claimed 74th in 22:16.56.

The Wolf trio are back at it Saturday, when they travel to Lakewood for the Nike Hole in the Wall Invitational.

It was the longest road trip of the year, by a lot.

While Coupeville High School’s trio of cross country runners heads off the Island for almost every meet, Saturday’s jaunt to the wilds of Montana was a little further than normal.

Wolves run under big skies!!

The races are bigger in big sky country.

Taking a break from Whidbey running, Coupeville High School’s cross country crew caught a ride with South Whidbey’s harriers to Montana, where they competed in Saturday’s Mountain West Classic.

The event, staged in Missoula, attracted 83 high school teams from multiple states, as well as another 45 middle school squads and three club teams.

Coupeville junior Danny Conlisk was the fastest of the two Wolves to run, covering the 5,000 meter course at the University of Montana in 17 minutes, 58.59 seconds.

He finished 126th out of 400 male varsity runners, while Cooper West of Great Falls won the event in 15:30.43.

Hitting the tape first was a major family milestone for West, as his older sister Keely won the girls title at the Mountain West Classic exactly 10 years ago today.

Washington state’s Lewis & Clark High School won the boys team title, while Montana’s Bozeman captured the girls team crown in a race which featured 320 competitors.

Freshman Sam Wynn rounded out the Wolf competitors (older brother Henry didn’t run Saturday), finishing in 21:49.23.

   Together, in uniform and in action, for the first time — Danny Conlisk (469), Henry Wynn (470) and Sam Wynn.

Team work!

For the first time this season all three Coupeville High School cross country runners were in uniform and on the course on the same day.

The Wolves, who travel and train with South Whidbey while they wait for CHS to revive its own storied program, ran Saturday at the 56-team Bellevue Cross Country Invitational at Lake Sammamish State Park.

Danny Conlisk, back in action after missing a meet due to illness, tore up the course, cruising through 5,000 meters in 17 minutes, 48.3 seconds, to finish 40th out of 74 runners in his flight.

That’s not only a PR for the Wolf junior, but a huge time drop, as he shaved 48 seconds off his previous best performance.

Running in the same race, CHS senior Henry Wynn finished 63rd in 19:00.

Rounding out the Wolf competitors was freshman Sam Wynn, who made his high school cross country debut.

The lil’ brother rambled home in 21:14.

The Invitational featured 13 different races, seven for boys and six for girls.

Coupeville’s trio really hit the road for their next event, traveling to Missoula, Montana for the 80-team Mountain West Classic Saturday, Sept. 30.

Wynn saves best for last!!

Henry Wynn is a closer.

Running in muggy weather down in Langley Saturday, the Coupeville High School senior harrier went deep and found a little something extra at the end of his race.

Wynn went to sprint mode in the final 100 meters of a 5,000 meter cross country race at the 39th annual Carl Westling Invitational, passing several runners down the backstretch.

He finished in 19 minutes, 23 seconds, with the strong surge pushing him to a 47th place finish out of 114 runners.

Running by himself — one teammate, Danny Conlisk, was out sick, while another, Sam Wynn, needs another practice to be eligible — Henry Wynn carried Coupeville’s colors in a race which attracted runners from 1B, 2B, 1A and 2A schools.

As the Wolves wait for their school to restart its own cross country program, they train and travel with South Whidbey High School runners and coaches.

Up next for the CHS trio is a trip to Lake Sammamish State Park Saturday, Sept. 23 for the Bellevue Cross Country Invitational.
