College football raged across the land Saturday, and everywhere you looked, a former Wolf was in there fighting.

Four Coupeville High School alumni suited up for action in games stretching from Montana to Canada, and all had an impact.

Redshirt freshman lineman Nick Streubel and his Central Washington University teammates cruised to their first win of the season, clobbering visiting Western Oregon 40-19.

Meanwhile, freshmen defensive backs Josh Bayne and Jake Tumblin gave it their all, but couldn’t quite save Simon Fraser University from falling 16-10 to visiting Azusa Pacific.

Bayne collected six solo tackles and one assist, while Tumblin had two tackles, two assists and was in on a tackle for a loss as they and the rest of the Clan celebrated Homecoming.

Tumblin, Bayne and Streubel will be reunited next Saturday, Sept. 26, when Simon Fraser travels to Ellensburg to face Central.

Up Montana way, the elder statesman of former Wolf gridiron gods, junior Mitch Pelroy, doesn’t know what it’s like to lose these days.

Pelroy and his Montana Western squad crushed host Montana State-Northern 44-2 to go to 3-0 on the season.

The Bulldogs have won seven straight dating back to last season.

With MSN having no luck scoring, Pelroy only had one kickoff to deal with and he brought it back 22 yards.

He’s averaging 18.5 yards per return this season.

Pelroy also chipped in on defense, recording a tackle and an assist, while teammate Sam Rutherford lit up the scoreboard with four touchdowns.

The moms are in mid-season form.

Saturday was just a jamboree for the Coupeville Middle School football squad — real games start next week — but team moms Deb Smith and Cheridan Eck are already killin’ it with the photos.

They’ve set the bar high and we appreciate it. Greatly.

Oh, brother!!

We may have a new champ.

This year’s edition of the Coupeville High School football squad boasts four sets of brothers — Gabe/Ty Eck, CJ/Hunter Smith, Jake/Josh Lord and Mitchell/Shane Losey — and that seemed like a lot for one team.

But it appears, thanks to our sleuths out there, that the 1961 Wolf gridiron squad did them one better.

That team boasted Tom and Ed Brown, Jim and Len Engle, Vin and Dale Sherman, Pat and Mike Millenbach and Roy and Gary Mattox.

A couple of those last names sound downright familiar…

Anyway, we now acknowledge the ’61ers as the gold standard … until someone else can pop up with photographic proof of six sets of brothers on a Wolf team.

I dare you.

One game does not a career make.

But, dang, it was a game.

Making his first start under center Friday, Coupeville High School freshman quarterback Gabe Eck shot bullet holes through Chimacum’s pass defense, completing 19 of 34 passes for 403 yards and three touchdowns in a 28-26 win.

To put the 403 yards in perspective?

Brad Sherman is the rightful career passing yardage leader at CHS (as far as we know from the spotty records) and his best game (we think) was 374 yards.

Is Eck’s total a single game record for the Wolves? Good luck in finding out, but it’s smack-dab in the conversation.

And, for the moment, it moves him ahead of sophomore Hunter Downes, who started at QB in the season’s first two games but was sidelined by injury Friday, on the stats sheet.

Who knows what’s to come, except for the fact Coupeville has two talented young gunslingers.

With that being said, semi-official stats through Week 3 arrive, with the usual caveat — if you disagree with your numbers, take it up with your coaches, who are the ones filing these stats on MaxPreps.

A new season kicks off today.

With Coupeville High School still riding high off last night’s win at Chimacum, its middle school counterparts boarded the bus Saturday morning to head to a jamboree at Stevens Middle School in Port Angeles.

CMS will play the host school, as well as Forks and Chimacum at the all-day affair, then lace it up for real Wednesday, Sept. 23 when Stevens comes to Whidbey.

That school, which the Wolves haven’t played before, boasts 600+ students and has a football roster that groans with 70 players.

By contrast, Coupeville coach Bob Martin has 26 guys to call on at the moment.

They are:

Noa Allen
Raymond Anderson
Trevor Jon Bell
Tyson Bovee
Michael Brewer
Koa Davison
Sage Downes
Dakota Eck
Trystan Ford
Mason Grove
Dawson Houston
Alex Jimenez
Elliott Johnson
Matthew Kelley
