So, does this mean I don’t have to pay rent next month?!?!

Yeah, probably not, but it is proof that my landlord here at Coupeville Sports HQ was once a Wolf athlete himself.

I’ve heard some of the tales from Jack Sell’s past, in the days when he was an undersized but over-achieving gridiron giant.

But here we see the legend that was, in bold black and white, thanks to former teammate Paul Messner, who dug it out of the archives.

Anyone else have stuff like this?

Send it my way (davidsvien@hotmail.com or find me on Facebook), as we reclaim Cow Town sports history one tidbit at a time.

Downes

Hunter Downes is coming for all your records. All of them, I said!

Welling and Battaglia

“Dang! Downes is like a beast out there!!” Julian Welling (in back) keeps an eye on his QB while stretching Chris Battaglia out.

The countdown is on.

In less than two weeks the Coupeville High School football squad will travel to Langley to kick off its first season under new head coach Brett Smedley.

Before that Sept. 4 battle for The Bucket, however, the Wolves will be putting in work. Lots of it.

Catching some of that practice time Monday was travelin’ photo man John Fisken, who provides us with the pics that reside above.

“Guys … guys … I think I just pulled every muscle in my entire body…”

Day two was a battle. Literally.

It may feel like the middle of the summer, but practice for fall sports officially began Wednesday, with the Coupeville High School football squad the first to kick off events.

The second day brought two new wrinkles to things — a visit by travelin’ photo man John Fisken and a team tug of war competition.

Let the clickin’ and the gruntin’ begin.

Uriel Liquidano

Uriel Liquidano, a man for all seasons. (John Fisken and Shelli Trumbull photos)

The town wasn’t the same without him.

A family move took Uriel Liquidano away from Coupeville High School for a bit last year and things almost fell all to pieces.

So, it’s a good thing he came back.

Once Oscar’s lil’ bro was back on the soccer pitch last spring, things went back to normal. To the way they were supposed to be.

Uriel is one of those indispensable guys, the glue that helps hold things together.

Calm and cool, especially under pressure, he excels on every field, whether it be the soccer pitch, the football gridiron or the basketball court.

He’s also at the forefront of school spirit, joining up with classmates Aiden Crimmins, Jonathan Thurston and Jimmy Myers to uphold the fine tradition of dressing up in costumes for volleyball matches.

As Uriel celebrates a birthday today, we just want to send him best wishes and let him know how much we enjoy having him back in these parts.

It wasn’t the same without you, man.

Four Coupeville Elementary School students are playing with the Oak Harbor Youth Football League this fall, and rovin’ camera man John Fisken snapped two of them during jamboree play this past weekend.

Making the trek up to Oak Town to battle on the gridiron are Wolves Logan Downes, Wyatt Howard, Gabriel Reed, Aiden O’Neil and Emett Raye.
