JR Pendergrass

Football never ends.

The season may be done for 99% of players across Washington state (unless you’re on one of the teams playing for a state title this weekend), but off-season workouts continue.

Those who want to be the stars of 2015 are working now.

Add Coupeville High School junior JR Pendergrass to that list.

Coming off his best season as a Wolf, he’s in the weight room and well on his way to preparing for his final year in the red and black.

While he lettered this season, he wants to be a key player as a senior.

“I want to lead my fellow teammates,” Pendergrass said. “To be there for my coaches when they need me, wherever they need me and work with everyone who supports Coupeville football and help us to a championship.”

The two-way lineman (center and defensive line) backed up current senior Carson Risner for much of the year.

With his departure, a starting spot would be up for grabs, something that helps drive Pendergrass during his workouts.

He first picked up football at age eight (“I wanted to try a new sport”), and has greatly enjoyed his two seasons in a Wolf uniform.

“I like being a part of a team like Coupeville that treats each other like family,” Pendergrass said.

In school, he tabs U.S. History with Ryan Grenz as his favorite, and he enjoys time spent with his friends and girlfriend.

That group, along with his family, have provided him with a faithful cheering section during his time at CHS.

“My mom and dad have supported me and even coached in my past years,” Pendergrass said. “Everyone involved in the Coupeville football community has been extremely nice and it really is like we all are one big family.

“When I moved here I was welcomed with open arms.”

Wiley Hesselgrave, destroyer of souls and the team’s Defensive MVP.

"Hi. We're gonna roll up about 500 yards on you. That work? It does? Nice."

Wolf linemen Aaron Wright (76) and Matt Shank (64) greet the guys they will later rough up.

Eight Coupeville High School football players took home team awards Friday at their season-ending banquet, but my money is on Gabe Wynn as the fastest of the honorees to reach the stage.

If not, the Wolf sophomore might need to give back his hardware honoring him as Mr. Hustle.

Other CHS players who rambled, perhaps a little slower, to get their awards included seniors Josh Bayne and Joel Walstad, who shared the Offensive MVP and junior Wiley Hesselgrave, who nabbed Defensive MVP.

Senior linemen Matt Shank (Coaches Award), Aaron Wright (Offensive Lineman of the Year) and Oscar Liquidano (Defensive Lineman of the Year) were joined by freshman defensive back Hunter Smith (Most Improved) in rounding out the winners.

Oscar Liquidano mans the line.

It took almost a decade in the last league, but just one semester in the new one.

Coming on the heels of Ben Etzell being named the baseball MVP of the 1A/2A Cascade Conference in the spring — the only time a Coupeville High School player took home that league’s top honor in any sport — Josh Bayne reached the top of the mountain in his new home.

Bayne, who led all 1A players in the state in rushing yards (1,528), touchdowns (25) and interceptions (6), was selected as the first football MVP in the new 1A Olympic League.

While Port Townsend (5-1 in conference) claimed the league title, there was little doubt that Coupeville’s two-way terror would claim top individual honors. Any other choice might have incited a riot.

In addition to the numbers above, Bayne also caught 31 passes for 460 yards, made 11 kickoff/punt returns for 224 yards and compiled 2,281 all-purpose yards. The one time he took a pitch and dropped back to pass, he completed a 43-yard bomb.

On defense he racked up 91 tackles (77 solo, 14 assists), which put him #3 in 1A, while recovering four fumbles and garnering two sacks to go with his picks.

Bayne wasn’t the only Wolf to be honored when coaches met, with four other CHS gridiron giants being tabbed for First-Team honors.

Senior Aaron Wright was honored for his work on the offensive line, while seniors Matt Shank and Oscar Liquidano were picked as defensive lineman. Junior Wiley Hesselgrave earned his spot as a linebacker.

Senior quarterback Joel Walstad and freshman defensive back Hunter Smith earned Honorable Mention status.

Smith was the only 9th grader in the league to be honored.

When the Bayne Train starts rollin,' would-be tacklers start flinchin'. (John Fisken photos)

“Get outta my way! I got burgers to cook after I score!!” (John Fisken photo)

They can’t spell his name right, but they did recognize his talent.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association picked Coupeville High School senior football sensation Josh Bayne as its 1A male athlete of the week for Week 10 of the fall season.

Bayne, who is identified as “Jos” on the WIAA’s official web site, was honored for his play in the Wolves 55-38 crunching of Bellevue Christian Nov. 7.

He scored six touchdowns against the Vikings — bringing his season total to 25 — rambling for 311 yards on the ground.

Bayne also caught two touchdown passes, recorded seven tackles, picked off a pass and recovered a fumble.

How complete was his domination?

Late in the game, it was rumored he was cooking hamburgers for the Coupeville Booster Club between plays, then sprinting back on the field just in time to take the hand-off.

The WIAA picks one male and one female athlete from each of the state’s classifications (4A, 3A, 2A, 1A, 2B, 1B) to honor each week.

Other winners for Week 10 included Aaron Roe of Jackson, who won the 4A state cross country title and Taylor Vadset of North Kitsap, who scored a pair of goals in a district girls’ soccer playoff win that lifted her team into the 2A state tourney.

Vote for Josh Bayne! He would vote for you!! (John Fisken photo)

Vote for Josh Bayne! He would vote for you!! (John Fisken photo)

OK, we’re going to need to work fast, and smart.

Northwest Elite Index has posted a poll to pick the best football performance from Week 10 of the high school season, and we’ve got a little over 14 hours to blow up their poll and bring victory to Cow Town.

Our guy, Coupeville High School senior Josh Bayne, is in third place in the three-man slug-fest, but he’s just a vote or two off of second place and first place is not out of sight.

The voting ends at noon Wednesday and the poll claims you can only vote once every 24 hours. BUT, I did find that I could vote once in Firefox, then slip over to Internet Explorer and get another vote in.

Just sayin…

And sure, there’s no trophy to go with this victory. Just the sweet, sweet satisfaction of spankin’ the big boy schools, in this case represented by Eastlake and Charles Wright Academy.

I mean, come on, are we going to just bow down to some private school fancy lad and let them have the honor without a fight? This is a fight for public school supremacy.

Spread the word! Vote (and maybe vote again). Roar, Wolf Nation, roar!!
