It’s simple.

Purchase photos, help fund scholarships for Coupeville High School student athletes.

John Fisken, who shoots sports locally, handed out $500 scholarships to Oak Harbor High School athletes Ciera Wiser and Josh Crebbin Friday. Next year, he’d like to do the same in Central Whidbey.

A portion of money raised when people purchase photos from Wolf sports events that Fisken shoots for CascadeAthletics.com next school year will go to fund the prospective scholarships.

They are designed to reward students who may not be their team’s star, but play year in and year out and participate in multiple sports.

Wiser competed in track and basketball for the Wildcats, while Crebbin, son of recently retired CHS volleyball coach Toni Crebbin, played football and soccer, ran track and wrestled.

Crebbin, who was also Oak Harbor’s Male Athlete of the Year and won the Cliff Gillies Award, will attend Washington State University, where he’ll study architecture, while Wiser is going to Western Washington University.

She plans to earn a law degree and specialize in environmental law.

You knew Caleb Valko wasn’t going down without a fight.

But not even a considerable rally late in the game from Team Valko, which marshaled its voting bloc in the late hours Thursday night, could upend Nick Streubel, who started strong and finished even stronger.

By the time the week-long voting for our inaugural 2012-2013 Athlete Supreme had reached the finish line Friday morning, 429 votes had been cast, with nearly 200 coming after I went to bed Thursday night.

What had been a two-person battle between Streubel, a junior who starred on the Coupeville High School football, boys’ basketball and track teams and Breeanna Messner, the school’s only four-sport (volleyball, cheer, basketball, softball) athlete turned into a three-way tussle.

Valko, a senior captain on the football and basketball squads, rallied his troops hard and he shot past Messner and made a run at Streubel, pulling within three votes.

Then The Big Hurt surged, spurred by a campaign led by big sis Amanda Streubel, and crushed everyone in sight, garnering 40.56% of the vote total in a 12-athlete field.

There was actually a 13th option, to vote for Other, which didn’t work the way I thought it would, as the results didn’t actually show the names people typed in for those votes. Which would have been awkward if Other had won.

But, in the end, NO ONE beats Team Streubel. NO ONE.

Final vote totals:

Streubel (174)
Valko
(111)
Messner
(72)
Bessie Walstad
(13)
Makana Stone

Madison Tisa McPhee

The eyes of the football world are increasingly falling on Nick Streubel.

The Coupeville High School senior-to-be has landed on the Northwest Prep Report-Rivals.com Top 100 of the Pacific NW list.

Devoted to the Class of 2014 gridiron giants, the list includes athletes from Washington, Oregon and Idaho. To make the list, you have to be considered a legitimate college football prospect who is also expected to have a huge impact next season at the high school level.

Big name schools like O’Dea, Federal Way, Jackson, Skyline, Tumwater and Bellevue all have players on the list, with Coupeville being one of the few small schools represented.

In his write-up, Dirk Knudsen, who has written extensively for OregonPreps.com and WashingtonPreps.com, gushes about Streubel, saying about The Big Hurt:

Nick Streubel is a powerful kid who has great ability. He finishes blocks with a vengeance far beyond his years. Being looked at by a number of schools and is very well coached! Keep an eye on this guy!

Not bad. Now they just need to put the E back between the P and V in Coupeville on their site and adjust Streubel’s stats. They list him at six-foot-three and 290 pounds. Last I heard he was six-four and 300.

"CJ, you should play football."

Back to the old days.

Back to a time when the football roster at Coupeville High School was annually in the 40’s, and not scraping by in the low 30’s.

That’s where Wolf coach Tony Maggio seems to be taking the Wolves as he kicks off his second season in the red and black.

With 39 players turning out for spring practices, and at least another three or four expected when fall practice arrives in late August, Coupeville should have some depth for once.

The Wolves have their biggest numbers at both ends of the spectrum, with 12 seniors and 11 freshmen so far.

The first test of its new strength will come next Friday, June 14 when Coupeville plays at a jamboree at Oak Harbor. That kicks off at 5:30 PM and features the Wolves, Wildcats and Sedro-Woolley, which is coached by former OHHS head man Dave Ward.

Coupeville’s spring roster:

Seniors:

Brett Arnold

Football’s back!!

The shoes that Gunnar Langvold wears.

The shoes that Gunnar Langvold wears.

Yes, it’s only June 1, and the school year is about to end, but practice for next fall’s Coupeville High School gridiron squad began in earnest Saturday.

Wolf coach Tony Maggio, who will be going into his second season at the helm, welcomed 39 players, with three more expected to show Monday. That number would be robust compared to recent CHS rosters.

With established headliners like Nick Streubel, Jake Tumblin and Wade Schaef mixing with freshmen-to-be like Steven Cope, Woody Liquidano and Ramon Booker, Coupeville looked good for Day 1.

“Kids worked hard today,” Maggio said. “We went right into it, just like we ended last year, fast tempo, kinda threw young kids into the fire. I think it was a huge success.”

That was a feeling echoed by senior-to-be Gunnar Langvold, who is competing for the starting quarterback position.

“Great first practice guys! Keep it up,” Langvold said.
