It’s the most wonderful time of the year.

If you like basketball, that is. Cause if you’re more of a wrestler, swimmer or gymnast, Coupeville High School is not the school for you.

The Wolves spring from the smallest 1A school in the state and when it comes to winter sports, it’s hoops or start planning for spring.

Thankfully, a lot of CHS students do like basketball. Of course, we’ll see how many when the first day of practice kicks off Monday.

As we sit at this moment — we’ll call it Basketball Eve — let’s take a moment to check in with some of the players planning to lace up their high tops and start running lines.

Everything is fresh and new again and hopes and dreams run wild, tempered with the knowledge that every season is started off with at least a bit of conditioning.

Tiffany Briscoe (Sophomore):

With basketball starting I’m a mess of excitement and jitters.

I think everyone is going in with a really positive outlook for this season. We’re in a new league and it’s a new chance for us to build up a name for Coupeville basketball.

I personally can not wait for the season to start. I’m hoping we can build on all the teachings we went through in open gyms.

I want to make a big impact in this league. We have the potential, the determination, and right now I think it’s really about fine tuning those skills.

Under the coaching of the Kings, I know that they will lead us to that.

I’d really love to take a majority of these games this season. And I believe we can do it!

I am just so excited! Though, I have to say, I know I’ll be hobbling around for the first week due to killer sore muscles, lol.

Kacie Kiel (Senior):

Well, basketball is definitely going to change this culture this year; everyone dreams of going to state, but I can say we are going to state!

I hope to improve my game so others will do the same; we are such a tight-knit group of girls and we are going far!

Basketball is one of the greatest sports ever but it doesn’t start til we are in condition and that’s the only thing I fear this year.

McKenzie Bailey (Junior):

Monday is the day where a new season starts.

I’m so excited to see our team together again. We are a family and it shows when we are on the court.

I’m very excited to get this season underway and excited to be back in the game.

Yes, the conditioning is going to be very intense but anything to make us better will be great.

We are such a good team and I know that these seniors want to go out with a bang, and I want to make that happen for them. We all do.

We are in a new league and this is our chance to prove how great we are. We want to start at the top and stay at the top.

Hey, maybe even make it to state; anything is possible with this team because we have so much heart and passion for this game.

It’s going to be a great season!

Lauren Grove (Sophomore):

I can’t wait for the season to begin.

Of course the main goal is always to win games. Another goal of mine is for Coupeville girls basketball to pose a threat to the other schools.

With hard work and dedication I know that we can accomplish great things and have a very successful season.

The conditioning isn’t always fun, but it’s what makes us better.

With that being said, I encourage my teammates to give it their all and come ready to work hard everyday.

Madeline Strasburg (Senior):

Senior year basketball, where do I begin?

Well, first, I am so amazed at how fast everything has progressed and that it is already time to kick start basketball season again, for the last time.

Also, I could never ask for a better group of girls to spend my last season with.

My sophomore year, when the Kings took over the program, our motto was to change the culture; honestly, I believe that we have undoubtedly accomplished that goal, and even taken that challenge to the next level.

With continuing hard work and the hunger to succeed, I personally believe that our team is the next STATE bound group of athletes!

I am so amped to get back in the gym and play with my girls!

I said it already, but our team has an enormous potential, we just have to get in touch with it.

My excitement to dominate the floor and our new conference is practically overflowing. We just have to go after it!

Hailey Hammer (Senior):

My hopes for this season is to come as one and win of course!

Basketball is definitely not my favorite sport, hurting my ankle is always in the back of my head, which sucks.

I am both excited and not excited because I don’t always enjoy basketball because it’s not my sport, but I’m excited to play with my senior girls one last time.

Monica Vidoni (Senior):

My hopes for the season is that we will be first in our league.

We have a lot of potential this year with our returners and some new upcoming people; our team is very talented and I believe that we will go very far this season.

I am very excited for the season; I have been waiting since the season last year.

Julia Myers (Senior):

I’m looking forward to basketball season with the girls a ton this year!

We have so much potential and I’d like to see us go to state this year. I have a feeling this is the year!

Also, the Kings are awesome, and I’m looking forward to having them coach me one last time!

Awards for her recent volleyball season.

Awards for her recent volleyball season.

It’s a whole new world for Emily Coulter.

Fresh off a sophomore softball season in the spring, where she played a key role in Coupeville High School advancing to the state tourney for the first time in 12 years, things took a huge detour.

A military transfer uprooted her parents (Sheila and Heath Coulter) and took the family to Italy, where she now attends the Naples American High School in Campania.

The irrepressible Coulter, a three-sport athlete at CHS (volleyball, basketball, softball) who entertained her teammates on and off the court, has continued to play at her new school, netting several volleyball awards recently.

The experience has been a wild one, but she has enjoyed it immensely.

Her thoughts:

“Everything has been great and then some. From the views to the real spaghetti, it’s been just fantastic.

Listen to this, instead of seeing Mt. Baker from my porch I see a volcano… A FREAKIN’ VOLCANO, DAVID!! Haha.

I wasn’t expecting to like it here so quickly, and with basketball starting over here I’m excited to show what the Kings have passed on to me.

However, even though I’m all the way in NHS Wildcat territory over here, I’m still a CHS Wolf at heart!

Canadian hail can be deadly.

At least when it’s a hail of three point bombs being buried from long range, as it was Sunday.

Down just seven at the half, the Coupeville girls’ basketball “fall ball” squad fell 63-34 to a trey-addicted Canuck team in their season finale.

The Wolves got close early in the second half, only to have their opponents open up on them, draining three after three after ever-lovin’ three.

Seemingly any shot the Canadians put up, no matter the distance, went into the bottom of the bucket on this day.

Makana Stone led the resistance, pouring in 12 points, snatching nine rebounds, blocking two shots and making off with a pair of steals, while Rachael Arand chipped in with eight points and nine rebounds.

Kailey Kellner and Lindsey Roberts each popped their own three-pointer, with Kellner tossing in a pair of free throws.

Kacie Kiel, Mia Littlejohn and Monica Vidoni added a bucket apiece to round out the Wolf scoring.

When the Canadians actually missed a shot, the Wolves were quick to snatch up the rebound, with Kiel (4), Lauren Grove (3), Tiffany Briscoe (3), Vidoni (2) and Littlejohn (2) all putting their name on the stat sheet.

Grove added two steals while Littlejohn doled out a pair of assists.

Coming off a successful, winning “fall ball” season, the Wolves will turn around and take the floor for the start of practice for the high school season Nov. 17.

CHS coaches David and Amy King, who were fans during fall ball — Scott Hay and Lark Gustafson ran the Wolf squad — were pleased with the level of commitment they saw from the Coupeville players who carved out time on their busy schedules to keep ballin’.

“We’d like to thank the girls who participated, for taking their time in the off-season to get better,” Amy King said. “The parents who were there every week supporting and to Scott and Lark for taking their personal time to be at the open gyms and make the trip to Burlington or Sedro Woolley every Sunday.”

If you’re a Wolf girl hoping to play for popular husband/wife coaches David and Amy King, better not wait until softball season.

Cause they won’t be there.

The Kings are stepping down as co-coaches for the Coupeville High School softball squad — Amy is also relinquishing her duties as JV volleyball coach — and the duo will revert to juggling their busy day-time jobs with coaching in only one season.

They are remaining in charge of the CHS girls’ basketball program, with David coaching the varsity and Amy leading the JV and joining her husband on the bench.

Under the guidance of the Kings, the Wolf softball team made a remarkable run last season, qualifying for the state tournament for the first time in 12 seasons.

The stat keepers are ready for a new season.

The seasons, they are a changin’.

Fall sports officially ended Friday with Coupeville drilling Bellevue Christian 55-38 on the gridiron, and now we sit nine short days away from the first day of basketball practice on Nov. 17.

Actual high school hoops games start two weeks after that and stretch through Feb., with the Wolf girls’ and boys’ squads combining to play at home 19 times in 2014-2015, barring any postseason flavor filtering into the CHS gym.

Coupeville has 10 doubleheaders this season, with four of them at home. The first comes Friday, Dec. 3 when South Whidbey makes the stroll up-Island.

The Wolves and Falcons, despite no longer being league mates in the 1A/2A Cascade Conference, will stay play twice this season, once in Cow Town and once down in Langley.

Having moved into the new 1A Olympic League, CHS will face each of its new rivals — Klahowya, Port Townsend and Chimacum — three times apiece.
