away

A rare down moment for a three-sport athlete.

Monica Vidoni roots for the wrong baseball team. Let’s just get that out there.

She’s a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fanatic, and, the simple fact is, the Pittsburgh Pirates are the far superior MLB franchise.

Truth. End of story.

And no, I really don’t need to be told what their respective records are right now.

That changes nothing. Nothing!

But anyway, get away from her obvious blindness in matters of baseball and Ms. Vidoni, who will be a senior at CHS in the fall, has become one of my favorites.

A three-sport athlete (volleyball, basketball, softball), she took great strides as a junior, lettering twice and starting for a softball squad that went to the state tourney.

She and Wolf teammates Kacie Kiel, Wynter Thorne and Kailey Kellner recently attended a basketball camp at Western Washington University, where they came away the undefeated camp champs.

As she heads towards her final year of high school sports, there is little doubt Vidoni will be “ballin’ hard.”

Here’s to hoping her finale plays out in grand fashion.

Basketball is always in season.

Coupeville High School players have four more chances to take part in open gyms this month, and, as Wolf girls’ coach David King points out, this is a great time for incoming freshman to start to make a name for themselves.

Turnouts on the girls’ side have been strong enough that they’ve been able to fully scrimmage five-on-five.

The remaining dates and times for July, as listed on the school district calendar:

GIRLS:

Mon-21 (4:30)
Wed-23 (4:30)
Tue-29 (4:30)
Thu-31 (4:30)

BOYS:

Tue-22 (4:00)
Thu-24 (4:00)

Wolves

A championship-caliber mix of Coupeville and Alaska.

Cow Town represents.

Hitting the road and coming home winners, four Coupeville High School girls’ basketball players (and one scrappy middle school sharp shooter) spent the past week at a basketball camp at Western Washington University.

While there, the Wolves — Wynter Thorne, Kacie Kiel, Monica Vidoni and Kailey Kellner — teamed up with players from Alaska to go undefeated and win the camp championship.

Coached by current WWU players Tia Briggs and Marcel Pounds, the squad, known as the Sharp Shooters, nipped the Dominate Defenders 48-46 in the championship game.

“It was AWESOME and our Coupeville girls REPRESENTED BIG TIME!! It was intense!!,” said former CHS hoops legend Sherry (Bonacci) Roberts, as she threatened to strangle her phone in her excitement.

Roberts was there to pick up daughter Lindsey, who was the lone CMS player to make the trek.

Playing with a group who embraced the camp slogan of “NO PAIN, NO GAIN ,” the younger Roberts, who will be an 8th grader in the fall, “worked on her shooting (and social skills) with her new posse from Ferndale!”

“Farm town girls unite!!”

Hailey Hammer, the early days.

Hailey Hammer, the early days.

Now a softball sensation.

Now a homer-launching softball sensation.

Hammer and Breeanna Messner hang out during volleyball season.

Hammer and Wolf teammate Breeanna Messner hang out during volleyball season.

Hailey Hammer has been so good for so long, in so many sports, it kind of seems like she’s been at Coupeville High School forever.

But even the legends have to start somewhere, as today’s time machine photo shows.

Bouncing from Tigger to being a rock-solid three-sport (volleyball, basketball, softball) athlete for the Wolves, Hammer is a quiet star.

She doesn’t scream and holler and try to grab the spotlight. She just goes out, game after game, and season after season, and puts up solid numbers in everything she does.

Hailey is a true gamer, and a quality young woman, to boot.

It has been an honor to cover her exploits for three years, and I look forward to her senior year.

You’re a class act, Hammer Time. Never change.

Shelby Kulz

Shelby Kulz

Shelby Kulz was always a good shot.

During her days on the hardwood for Coupeville High School, the 2012 grad drained her fair share of jumpers for the Wolf girls’ basketball squad.

Now she’s taken her keen shooting eye and turned it in the direction of film-making.

Kulz, who works as a picker on the harvest boat for Penn Cove Shellfish, just posted to YouTube a five-minute documentary film she shot depicting life and work on the water.

It’s the continuation of a skill she also showcased while at CHS.

“When I was in high school I did documentaries for History Day, but this is my first movie with all of my own footage,” Kulz said. “I plan on making more movies for Penn Cove in the near future, focusing on different parts of the company such as the warehouse and seed crew.”

When she’s not shooting, Kulz works in the heart of the mussel harvesting operation.

“What happens is when the mussel is pulled and goes through all the machines, it’s poured onto a conveyer belt and we have to pick out all the broken mussel, the barnacles, and the clumps of mussel called byss,” Kulz said. “From there it’s bagged out and sent to the warehouse.”
