The most electrifying basketball player in Coupeville starts a new season today.

Hey, there are some very good hoops hotshots on the rosters of the local high school squads. But none of them play with the reckless abandon, the I-just-stepped-off-a-playground-in-Jersey style of Mia Littlejohn.

The Coupeville Middle School eighth-grader, younger sister of former Wolf star Zepher Loesch, is just one of many players expected to turn out when CMS kicks off its girls’ basketball season Tuesday.

But she gets the headline because she’s, well, a headliner.

Dribbling between her legs, weaving in and out of traffic, sometimes in control, sometimes not, she would have been worth the price of admission last season — if they charged admission for middle school sports.

But don’t worry. This is not 100% about one player.

As soon as CMS coaches Bob Martin (7th) and Brett Smedley (8th) have something resembling rosters, we will get all the girls’ names up here.

Until then, start counting down the days until the first tip-off.

The schedule:

Thursday, Feb. 13 Langley
Tuesday, Feb. 18 @ Granite Falls
Monday, Feb. 24 Northshore
Wednesday, Feb. 26 @ Sultan
Monday, March 3 @ Lakewood
Wednesday, March 5 King’s
Monday, March 10 Granite Falls
Wednesday, March 12 @ Langley

P.S. — Schedules have been known to change. For up-to-the-minute results, check http://coupeville.tandemcal.com/.

I could do this all day long.

Ever since my sister, Sarah Kirkconnell (http://www.gazingin.com/) introduced me to PicMonkey (http://www.picmonkey.com/,) a web site where you can craft all sorts of things out of photos, I have run amuck.

It started with a nearly 60-page picture book that I made for someone, a film noir-influenced tale of hard-bitten private eyes tracking a missing dog.

The real life femme fatale got back her wayward doggie, then got a book to remember the surreal 36-hour adventure of those who went searching for the fluffy pup.

Today I tried out the “posterize” feature on the site and the five “works of art” above are my creations.

They use photos originally shot by John Fisken and Robert Bishop, and pay homage to my one true life-long love — the movies.

Sweet, sweet time-wasting…

Anyone can get action shots.

But being a team mom, and, more than that, the team mom that feeds everyone, Amy Briscoe gets behind the scenes access to the Coupeville High School girls’ basketball team.

The photos above are part of her collection of candid shots of the Wolves when they’re not on the court.

A slightly different take on the young women who wear the red and black on game nights.

You can move off Whidbey Island, but you can never really get away.

Friday night, former Coupeville High School girls’ basketball coach Jackie Bykonen came back to the Island — well, the North end at least.

Now a coach with Meadowdale, a 3A school in the Western Conference, she was in town to help the Mavericks keep Oak Harbor winless.

Meadowdale withstood a third quarter charge from the Wildcats and escaped town with a 61-53 win.

The Mavericks are 5-9, while OHHS sits at 0-12. Bykonen’s former squad currently sits at 6-6.

Wynter Thorne

Some nights you deliver the lesson. Other nights it gets delivered to you.

It was a case of the latter Friday night for the Coupeville High School JV girls’ basketball squad. Coming off of several stellar defensive outings, the Wolves had the tables turned on them by visiting King’s and it wasn’t pleasant.

The 52-15 loss, in which CHS didn’t score until Wynter Thorne banked home an inside shot midway through the second quarter (at which time the Wolves trailed 25-0) was a reminder that you win with grace and lose with grace.

“We’ve been on the other side of this kind of game, and always made sure our girls handled it well,” said Coupeville coach Amy King. “Now, they know how it feels to be on the other side.

“Treat the other team with respect when you win, and hope you’re treated with respect when you lose.”

Down 33-3 at the half, Coupeville put up a much better fight in the second half.

While a running clock kept the score down after halftime, the Wolves stayed within 19-11 behind several big shots from Kailey Kellner.

The recent transfer from England hit a pair of long three-point bombs and two free-throws as she paced Coupeville with eight points.

Thorne hit for four, Carlie Rosenkrance netted a bucket and Emily Coulter tossed in a free throw to round out the scoring.

Wolf JV boys lose: Down in Everett, the Coupeville JV boys suffered virtually the same fate. The Wolves trailed 34-3 at the break, put up a much stronger fight in the second half and fell 55-19.
