“We never stopped”

“We never stopped. The girls brought strong effort from start to finish.”

That was the primary positive note Coupeville High School girls soccer coach Kyle Nelson carried away Tuesday night.

Yes, a very-strong Mount Vernon Christian squad drilled the Wolves 10-0 at Mickey Clark Field, but the undermanned Wolves never stopped fighting.

Coupeville was missing leading scorer Ayden Wyman, who was ill, but the Hurricanes, who have ruled the Northwest 2B/1B League pitch, would have been tough to topple even with a full roster.

MVC scores quickly — it rattled home the night’s first goal just 33 seconds into play Tuesday — and it scores a lot.

The Hurricanes, who have built a strong program in the past couple of seasons, have multiple weapons, and all of them were firing during their visit to Whidbey Island.

Coupeville’s defense, anchored by seniors Nezi Keiper and Carolyn Lhamon, fought valiantly, charging into the fray time and again.

Unfortunately for the Wolves, MVC kept them under constant pressure, peppering the net with a never-ending hail of shots.

Seven balls found the back of the net in the first half, with three more Hurricane scores tacked on in the game’s final 40 minutes.

Nelson praised his team for not wavering while down 7-0, but instead closing with some of their strongest play of the night.

“We were a little better in the second half,” he said. “The girls made adjustments and finished with conviction.”

The loss drops Coupeville to 0-2 in league play, 1-5 overall, with a crucial game coming up on the schedule next week.

The Wolves host Friday Harbor — a team it narrowly lost to in the season opener — Tuesday, Oct. 4.

Four of the seven Northwest 2B/1B League schools play girls soccer, and two teams make the playoffs.

MVC is the frontrunner right now, La Conner the cellar dweller, and the battle between Coupeville and Friday Harbor will likely go a long way towards determining the league’s #2 seed.

La Conner Covid outbreak shuffles sports schedule

Thursday’s schedule just got a whole lot more open.

Coupeville High School was slated to send volleyball and girls soccer squads to La Conner that day for crucial Northwest 2B/1B League bouts, but it’s not to be.

Instead, the Wolves will stay home after the Braves postponed the events due to a Covid outbreak among their spikers and booters.

The soccer game has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 11, with volleyball bumped to Tuesday, Oct. 18.

CHS booters bounce Spartans

This time, things broke their way.

Playing in a one-goal game for the third time in five tilts this season, the Coupeville High School girls soccer team came out on top Saturday at Forks.

Sparked by sophomore Ayden Wyman’s third goal of the year, and strong work in net by goalie Anna Myles, the Wolves edged the host Spartans 1-0.

The non-conference victory lifts Coupeville to 1-4 on the season.

Wyman, the lone Wolf to score this season, punched in her third goal of the campaign, and the seventh of her prep career, to make the difference.

She was set up by teammate Bryley Gilbert, who notched the assist.

Myles and her defenders clamped down from there, frustrating Forks in their efforts to find an equalizer.

“Lots of shots the second half,” said CHS coach Kyle Nelson. “Thankfully we got one of them in to take the game.”

Coupeville returns home to face Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday, Sept. 27.

It’s the first of three straight Northwest 2B/1B League contests for the Wolves and the nightcap in a pitch doubleheader.

Coupeville’s boys host defending state champ Orcas Island at 4 PM that day, followed by the girls game at 6 PM.

Ayden Wyman hits paydirt (again)

Ayden Wyman is on a run.

The Coupeville High School sophomore has scored both of her team’s goals this season, including one in a narrow 2-1 loss Saturday to visiting Ocosta.

Toss in four scores from her fab frosh season, and Wyman is already tied with former Wolf stars Mallory Kortuem and Eryn Wood for 11th place on the all-time CHS girls soccer scoring list.

The program, which launched in 2004, has five players who’ve tallied double digits, led by Mia Littlejohn (35) and Kalia Littlejohn (33).

Genna Wright (20), Lindsey Roberts (17), and Avalon Renninger (12) round out the Wolf girls in the top five.

Sophie Martin (8), Sage Renninger (8), Marisa Etzell (7), Alexia Hemphill (7), and Micky LeVine (7) are next up for Wyman, who has another nine regular season games left on the schedule in her second season.

Saturday’s loss to Ocosta, which travelled 145 miles one-way for the non-conference tilt, drops Coupeville to 0-4.

The Wildcats, who like to make one long trip each season as a team bonding experience, are 2-2-1 on the season.

Coupeville’s record is a bit deceptive, with two of its four losses being one-goal affairs. The other defeats were against 3A Oak Harbor and private school power University Prep.

The Wolves get some time to rest up, recover from nagging injuries, and work on fine-tuning their attack on both sides of the field, not playing again for a week.

CHS will be the one making the epic journey, trekking a modest 113 miles to the wilds of Forks Saturday, Sept. 24 for another non-conference rumble.

After that the Wolves have three straight Northwest 2B/1B League clashes, starting with a matchup against defending league champ Mount Vernon Christian.

Booters survive rough ‘n tumble afternoon

It was a rumble on the turf.

The Coupeville High School girls soccer squad traveled to Seattle Thursday to face off with ritzy private school University Prep and picked up more ouchies than goals.

Already missing senior leader Carolyn Lhamon, who was tending to a foot injury, the Wolves fell 7-0 to the Pumas.

The non-conference loss drops Coupeville to 0-3, but its aftereffects may linger for a bit.

“A few of our girls got trucked,” said senior defender Nezi Keiper. “I got a lot of turf burn and bruises.

“Luckily, our ref called most of it.”

Keiper praised the play of Wolf goaltender Anna Myles, saying “she played great, lots of saves, but a very physical game.”

Coupeville’s roster doesn’t have a ton of experience, but the Wolves are learning on the fly.

“Our defense is slowly understanding how to play and getting better each game,” Keiper said.

“We didn’t get a lot of chances on offense, but Ayden (Wyman) and Ava (Mitten) tried their best to make runs.

“University Prep was a very good team.”

Coupeville returns to the pitch Saturday, when it plays at home against non-league foe Ocosta in a 2 PM game.

It’s the first time the schools have met, with the Wildcats traveling 145 miles one way for the clash.

Ocosta, which is 1-2-1 on the season, plays in the Pacific 2B League along with schools like Ilwaco, Forks, and Chief Leschi, and likes to make one long trip a season as a team bonding experience.
