Everett delivered the heat, but the Wolves were the ones who were on fire Thursday.

Playing in 80+ degree heat at Archbishop Thomas Murphy, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis team closed its regular season with a sizzlin’ 4-3 win over the private school rich kids.

The third straight win for the Wolves, it brought their final mark to 6-7 overall, 4-4 in Cascade Conference play.

“The girls and I were all pretty excited by the result,” said Coupeville coach Ken Stange. “I’ll admit that I’d hoped we would end up with a winning record, but after losing five straight, winning the final three matches eased much of the pain!”

The match was decided by the most deceptively tough duo on the sun-baked hard-courts — freshman Valen Trujillo and junior Micky LeVine.

Get past the mega-watt smiles and impeccable manners, and these are girls who will slice you off at the knee caps — which is a good thing.

“It wasn’t easy, but Valen was hitting her hardest shots of the season, and Micky and her racket had the reflexes of a shortstop!” a jubilant (and possibly overheated) Stange bellowed.

Ken Stange may need some time to unwind.

The Coupeville High School girls’ tennis coach saw his squad get not one, but two, victories in third set tiebreakers Wednesday, lifting the Wolves to a barn-burner of a 3-2 win over visiting Lakewood.

“It was tense for awhile,” Stange admitted afterwards.

The second straight victory for the CHS netters, as they head towards postseason play, it lifted the Wolves to 5-7 overall, 3-4 in Cascade Conference play.

It also gave Coupeville, the smallest 1A school in the state, a season sweep of one of the biggest 2A schools in the league.

McKenzie Bailey and Samantha Martin were the wrecking machine of the afternoon, strolling to a 45-minute win at first doubles.

“They outmatched the opposition and played very aggressive tennis,” Stange said. “They got off to a hot start, and Lakewood played on their heels for the entire match. It was a strong win for the sophomore duo.”

With three matches in the books, Coupeville trailed 2-1, then rallied in its final two contests.

Sydney Autio and Bree Daigneault, who was making her varsity debut, teamed to pull out a huge doubles win, before Jacki Ginnings iced the win.

Ginnings dropped her opening set at #2 singles, and found herself trailing 5-2 in the second set, then pulled off a comeback for the ages.

Battered by a recent battle with illness, the still-exhausted Wolf junior dug down deeper than deep.

First she roared back to rip off five straight games, then she held on for an epic 10-7 tiebreaker win with both teams (and their coaches) hanging on every shot.

“I told her that we just needed ten more successful extensive rallies–just ten,” Stange said. “She did it!

“Statistically speaking, most three-setters are won by the player/team who won the first set,” he added. “We won two matches today, after losing the first set. We bucked the odds today. The girls played their hearts out!”

They got that winning feeling back.

Snapping a five-match losing streak, the Coupeville High School girls’ tennis squad shredded visiting Granite Falls 4-1 Tuesday. The victory avenged a narrow loss to the Tigers from last week, and put a smile on CHS coach Ken Stange’s face.

After taking a 5-2 loss to the joint forces of Port Townsend and Chimacum a day before, Stange shuffled his lineup and everything clicked against the Tigers.

The win lifted Coupeville to 4-7 with two matches left in the regular season.

The highlight of the Granite Falls match came from a new-look doubles duo of Wynter Thorne and Sydney Aparicio, who collected Player of the Match honors for a gritty win.

Sydney and Wynter both played the best tennis of their lives, and they did it against the GF duo who held my #1 team to five games in our match last week,” Stange said. “They hit harder, they were more accurate, and they went for each and every ball. It was inspiring tennis.”

Isla Dubendorf poses on the tennis court she has come to rule.

Isla Dubendorf poses on the tennis court she has come to rule.

I am often accused of picking on South Whidbey (and it’s mostly true), so, from time to time, I offer an olive branch to Coupeville’s closest rival.

While I don’t exactly want the Falcons to beat the Wolves at anything, the reality is there are a lot of very talented, very smart young men and women wearing the blue and white.

Let’s take a moment to acknowledge them.

Cause Lord knows the Canadian-owned South Whidbey Record isn’t exactly doing a bang-up job at it.

Isla Dubendorf can do just about anything.

The South Whidbey High School junior is currently the #1 singles player for the high-powered Falcon girls’ tennis squad, but that’s just the beginning.

Toss in varsity soccer, ski racing for the Stevens Pass Alpine Club, her work as both a swim and tennis instructor, time as a Spanish Camp counselor and math tutor and membership in Key Club and Spanish Club.

And that’s before we get to her academic credentials, which includes a 4.0 GPA, membership in the National Honor Society and her selection as an American Association of University Women scholar in science.

In her free time (she DOES have some, taking a break after being in her school’s ASB the previous two years), Dubendorf enjoys herself, even if her mind is still possibly buzzing from all her activities.

“I really enjoy learning new things about the world around me, as well as learning different languages,” Dubendorf said. “During my free time I love hanging out with my friends and family, or sitting outside on a warm day on Whidbey Island.

“What I love about both South and Central Whidbey are the smaller communities and the beauty of the Island,” she added. “I enjoy the friends I have in both South Whidbey and Coupeville and the fun rivalry between the two schools.”

And the tasty treats to be found no matter where she is.

“I also love the delicious food in both places,” Dubendorf said. “Such as China City, the Village Pizzeria, and The Knead and Feed’s incredible cinnamon rolls!”

Whether she’s on the tennis court, or participating in any of her sports, Dubendorf is always looking to get better. A hard worker, she enjoys the side benefits she gets from competition almost as much as the wins.

“I think my best athletic strength is probably self determination and the desire to always improve,” she said. “I strive to do my best in what I’m doing and also look for ways to refine my game.

“What I love about the sports I play is how good it makes me feel after a hard practice or game and the feeling of accomplishment when I do well,” Dubendorf added. “I also enjoy the competition and adrenaline before a match or a game or a race.”

She tends to listen to pop or dubstep music, “or something that can get me hyped up and excited for a game,” and it’s worked out well.

As a sophomore she finished fourth at districts while playing doubles, helping South Whidbey capture the team title. Then this year she netted a goal against Blaine in a district playoff soccer game.

Dubendorf credits her family and coaches for providing her with the guidance necessary to both enjoy her sports and continue to develop her skills.

“My family has always had a big impact on me, whether they’re encouraging me to try my best or supporting me in what I’m doing,” she said.

“Coach Kramer and Coach Gochanour have also had a great impact on my overall sports (especially tennis) career,” Dubendorf added. “They let me know what I need to work on, show me the right technique for certain shots, and, with their excellent history in tennis, inspire me to always work hard.”

A big fan of her Pre-Calculus and AP United States History classes, which both require hard work, Dubendorf is committed to keeping her GPA as stellar as her tennis game.

Her future plans include attending college, with an eye on majoring in biology or mathematics. She’d also like to take her racket along with her when she goes.

“I am determined to improve my skills in tennis enough over the next year to be able to play in college!”

Wynter Thorne seized the moment.

Given a chance to play singles for the first time Wednesday, the Coupeville High School junior moved out into the solo spotlight and pasted her opponent at Granite Falls.

With top Wolf singles player Allie Hanigan out and the two teams playing a best-of-seven format since Granite is a 2A school, as opposed to Coupeville’s normal best-of-five format, Thorne shed her normal role as a doubles player.

When she did, she was flawless, blasting to a double bagel, 6-0, 6-0, win.

“This was a fun win for Wynter. She made the most of her opportunity!” said Coupeville coach Ken Stange.

In the end, though, the Wolves didn’t have quite enough firepower to pull off the upset, falling 4-3 in an extremely close match, their third in as many days.

“Even though we were missing our top player, the girls battled hard,” Stange said. “Hopefully, we can get back to winning today, if the weather lets up.”

Coupeville (3-6) is scheduled to host Lakewood, a team it beat earlier this season, at 3:30 PM if the rain stays away.
