Kyla Briscoe

Kyla Briscoe

I knew Kyla Briscoe before she got famous.

Before she was a starter Thursday night in the first home varsity volleyball match of her freshman season.

Even back before the days when she and Lauren Rose gave me free cupcakes during their middle school basketball season. Sweet, sweet free cupcakes…

But, yes, anyways, I knew Kyla, who celebrates her 15th birthday today, back when she was but a wee lass running wild in the aisles of first Videoville and then David’s DVD Den.

Since that time she has shot up to basketball-playing height and is on the fast track to being a multi-sport athletic star, but nothing has changed about her personality.

Kyla still is one of the sunniest, friendliest young women in the world, a devoted lil’ sis to Wolf sophomore Tiffany Briscoe (even when the two are tackling each other over the back of a couch while fighting for the remote control) and a truly wonderful person.

She is smart, she is caring, she is well on her way to becoming the truly awesome woman she will one day be.

Mom and dad (Amy and Rich Briscoe) should be very proud of their youngest (their oldest, too).

Seeing her succeed, in athletics and in life, is heartwarming.

Kyla is one of those kids who you root for, 1000%, every day.

She doesn’t demand things for free, she goes out and works hard for them, following in the footsteps of her other “big sister,” CHS senior Hailey Hammer, a strong role model for all young athletes.

So, Miss Briscoe, I hope this birthday, like all the ones to come, are worthy of you. Cause you’re pretty dang awesome, so your festivities should match.

And, if you should happen to find yourself with too many birthday cupcakes … well, good thing you know where I live.

Jake Tumblin

Jake Tumblin

He was, and is, the modest superstar.

Jake Tumblin was the most electrifying man in sports entertainment during his years as a Coupeville Wolf, but if you ever heard him boast about his accomplishments in public, that would be one more time than I ever heard.

He would slash through defenses on the football fields, racking up 200+ yards, than give props to his linemen.

On the baseball diamond, he would give opposing pitcher’s heart palpitations as he twirled and danced, then rip off another stolen base in a cloud of dust, before popping up, giving CHS coach Willie Smith a slight nod and going about his business.

The kid had nicknames, some of which may have just been made up by me for my own amusement.

JT. (Yelled Jay-TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE by the crowd).

Jake the Snake.

Shake ‘n Bake Jake.

Rumblin’ Tumblin (who was never stumblin’).

Through it all, though, Jake was calm, quiet, a leader by example, on the field and off, someone it was easy to root for at all times.

As he celebrates his birthday today, with his eyes firmly locked on making his dream of playing college football a reality, he remains the same guy.

After Coupeville pulled off a thrilling 35-28 upset of South Whidbey Friday to reclaim “The Bucket,” Tumblin was there on the field, mingling with his former teammates, congratulating them and CHS coach Tony Maggio.

In a few words and fist bumps, he passed the mantle on to a new generation of Wolf stars. The best thing they can do is to play and carry themselves the way their predecessor did.

Rumblin’ Tumblin put on a show, always, but he did it with style and class.

He honored the uniform, his school and his town, and he’ll always have our respect for it.

Haleigh Deasy

Haleigh Deasy

One of the nicest people in town hits a milestone today.

Coupeville High School senior Haleigh Deasy may not be quite as feisty as her mom, Cindy, but she shares her mother’s ever-present smile.

I have yet to see a photo where young Miss Deasy isn’t beaming joy out at the world.

Even on a “balmy” spring day, when wind and cold make the idea of playing tennis slightly less than grand, her grin is still there — under several layers of clothes.

As she kicks off her last year of high school, celebrating her birthday today, what can we say but “Keep on smilin’.”

You’re helping to light up the world around you, Haleigh. Job well done.

Kurtis Smith

Kurtis Smith

Lathom Kelley

Lathom Kelley

Is it even possible for one day to contain so much raw charisma without the calendar exploding?!?!

It’s a question worth asking as two of the biggest and boldest showmen in Coupeville celebrate a joint birthday today.

Wolf grad Kurtis Smith, he of the sweet baseball swing and flyin’ feet, and CHS junior Lathom Kelley, a gridiron beast prone to bouncing off of walls in the gym (literally), are not quiet, shy wallflowers.

Both talented athletes who delight in playing a bit to the crowd, they make my job so much easier.

Quick with the quotes, even quicker with the photo ops, they were born to be stars.

Bright, shining supernovas.

And, since they’re both too busy to spend a lot of time reading some kind of gushy tribute, let’s just wish them much sweet, sweet birthday cake and send them on their way, “Wayne’s World“-style, with maybe a lil’ bit of McConaughey.

“Party on, Kurtis!” “Party on, Lathom!”

Keep on keepin’ on.

Two years ago, Coupeville High School brought The Bucket home.

A Wolf gridiron team that included Bryce Fleming went to Langley and shocked the Falcons 18-13, reclaiming the trophy that goes to the winner of the annual all-Island rivalry.

Key to that victory, which clinched a playoff berth for Coupeville, was the then-junior, who hauled in the game-deciding score on an eight-yard pass from Josh Bayne. It was Fleming’s seventh TD that season.

Not bad for a speedy two-way weapon who has always had the good sense to be a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

Seahawk lovers jumped on the bandwagon (and will eventually fall off ) but Steelers fans are for life, baby!

One ring is cute. Six rings is a dynasty.

OK, anyway, movin’ on…

Jump forward two years from Fleming and Co. pulling off big-game heroics and it’s time to once again throw down some more Footballageddon.

Tonight is opening night to the 2014 season, and it’s a big one, with the Wolves and Falcons squaring off in Cow Town (7 PM kickoff), with the trophy currently in South Whidbey hands.

Fleming won’t be in town for the game, as he is now in the Army, the fourth generation in his family to suit up for the military.

But, as he celebrates his 19th birthday far away from Whidbey (probably with a forced march), this year’s Wolf squad, which includes some players from the 2012 team like Bayne, Wiley Hesselgrave and Lathom Kelley, can be inspired by what Fleming once accomplished.

They can go out and revive the cries of “What do Wolves eat? Falcon meat!!!”

They can reclaim their trophy. Right what went wrong last year. Make Langley weep salty tears of regret.

And, on his birthday, they can put the cherry on top of the sundae for a former star now serving his country with great honor.

Make Bryce Fleming’s birthday complete. Win one for #80.
