"My cake's on fire! Too many candles!! Too many candles!!"

“My cake’s on fire! Too many candles!! Too many candles!!”

Can we call him the ol’ ball coach now?

Today marks the 41st birthday of Coupeville High School football guru Tony Maggio, with his second season at the helm of the Wolf program just weeks away from kicking into full-gear.

Let the cake rain down just like the touchdowns Jake Tumblin is going to score for him in the fall.

"I've made a huge mistake."

“I’ve made a huge mistake.”

July 13 was a busy day in the delivery room.

At least four people with a direct connection to Coupeville High School sports entered the world on this day, in different years. From the recently graduated Britnie Korzan to former Wolf hoops stud “Fast” Eddie Fasolo and football/baseball mom Shannon Tumblin, cake and well wishes are everywhere.

The headliner, however, is the man, the myth, the barefoot tennis-playing legend himself, CHS tennis coach Ken Stange.

The sage of the hard court is timeless, regardless of what the calendar says. The back may creak a bit more than in the old days, but he’ll still kick your fanny on the court, then let you hear about it.

Then, of course, he’ll dance.

Why? Because he’s Ken Stange, and he can.

Dance on, net man. Dance on.

Volleyball veteran.

Breeanna Messner is a quiet star.

But she is a star, without a doubt.

The Coupeville High School junior excels at whatever sport you put in front of her, and, in 2012-2013, she was the only Wolf to play four sports, with volleyball, cheer (it’s a sport, so suck it!), basketball and softball.

Before basketball games, as her teammates bounced around in the stands, Messner always seemed to be locked-in on her school work. She seems naturally smart, but it’s obvious she puts a lot of work in as well.

Which would also describe her on the playing field, where her talent is only topped by her work ethic and an utter commitment to her teammates. From starter to fringe bench player, she reaches out to them all.

If she is not a captain in all of her sports as a senior, I will be shocked. Who would you want to lead your team more?

The daughter of a legendary Wolf athlete (Aimee Bishop), Breeanna has a large cheering section of family and friends at all of her games, and she deserves it.

At 17 she is a great athlete, a strong scholar and, most of all, as classy as they come.

Every community needs a Willie Smith.

Coupeville High School’s longtime baseball guru — who was also a pretty dang successful basketball coach back in the olden days — is the kind of coach who it’s easy to get behind.

Always positive yet willing to demand a high level of play, he’s beloved by his players and fans alike.

Plus, he has never dodged a question, ever, when cornered for post-game interviews. He tells you the truth, good or bad, and then, sometimes, steps back, smiles and chuckles, “Yeah, better not write that!!”

May his grin light up the diamond for many years to come.

Zane Bundy turns 15 today.

Let that sink in.

The little kid who used to hang out at Videoville, the slightly older little kid who used to hang out at David’s DVD Den, will be a sophomore at Coupeville High School next fall.

Oh, and he can fly now too. So there’s that.
