It’s the look of excellence.

Whether in town or on the road, Coupeville High School athletes are lookin’ fresh and confident Friday morning.

On The Rock, it’s all about football, as the Wolves prepare to host arch-rival South Whidbey (7 PM kickoff) in the season opener.

Among the players counting down the hours until the Battle for The Bucket are CHS junior CJ Smith and lil’ bro, Hunter, a frosh.

The Smith family moved to town in the middle of the school last year and CJ had an impact in basketball and baseball, but this will be the first time the brothers suit up in the red and black as football players.

Way down the road, at the state fair in Puyallup, one of the younger members of a long-time Coupeville sports family is unleashing her athletic prowess.

Wolf sophomore Ally Roberts is taking a break from the CHS volleyball squad to continue her run as a horse rider extraordinaire.

She’ll be competing in multiple events this weekend, but we couldn’t wait and had to show you how she did in her first event at state.

Simple answer: she’s kickin’ some fanny.

And why not? It’s the Coupeville way.

Sylvia Hurlburt is a bright, shining star.

Whether operating on the track oval, as a Wolf cheerleader, or as a ballet dancer, the Coupeville High School junior excels at about a billion and a half things.

Plus, she does most of it while sportin’ a mega-watt smile of epic joy.

But there were a few moments, early on, when the smile was just barely beginning to creep out around the edges.

One such sliver of time is depicted in the first photo above, which captures Miss Hurlburt when she was still Lil’ Miss Hurlburt.

You can see the smile coming, but there’s a wee bit of “what was I thinking getting up here in the first place” also on her face.

No worries. The smile won out in the end.

Fillin' up the available space.

Fillin’ up the available space.

And how would you beat her?

With a stick. While she slept.

But on a horse? That woman is unbeatable.

Yep, 13 years later, “A Knight’s Tale” is still the best (RIP Heath Ledger), and, with a few words tweaked, one of its best quotes fits Coupeville’s own conquering warrior, Madison Tisa McPhee.

The Wolf grad and former medal-winning track sensation is off at college and well on her way to becoming an EMT these days, but she still finds time to do a little hurdling.

Most times, it’s on her horse, where she continues to whip up on the competition while riding in various western games.

Competing this week at the 49th O-Mok-See National Championships in Wyoming, Tisa McPhee has placed in six events, winning her division in Western Jumping.

The prestigious event, put on by the National Saddle Clubs Association, runs July 19-25.

Ally Roberts, she was born awesome. (John Fisken and Jennifer Eelkema-Roberts photos)

Ally Roberts, she was born awesome.

She is heir to a pretty impressive legacy.

Her grandfather (Sandy Roberts) was a legendary Coupeville High School coach.

Her dad (Jay Roberts), aunt (Sherry (Bonacci) Roberts) and uncle (Jon Roberts) were all premier athletes during their times as Wolves.

Her older sister (Madeline Roberts) is going to play softball on scholarship in college.

So it’s a good thing Ally Roberts is pretty dang awesome herself. Otherwise, she might not have much to talk about during family get-togethers.

But the CHS freshman, who celebrates her 15th birthday today, has already accomplished much in her short time as a Wolf.

Volleyball player, and sparker of the one-woman “Ally Rally.” Irrepressible cheerleader whose smile lights up the entire gym on its own. Both nice accomplishments.

But put her on a horse, and that’s where Ally really rules.

Her collection of ribbons and trophies is building at a staggering rate, and at the top of the pile is a state championship she claimed in intermediate trail riding at the Washington State Fair in September.

That event is no walk in the park, consisting of a rider taking their horse through a course that can include gate (open and close), bridge walk-throughs (cones or poles), jog- throughs (cones or poles), jog-overs (poles on the ground), back-throughs (L’s, U’s, serpentines), loping (circles, over poles) and sidepassing (i.e. to a mailbox).

What’s next for the pint-sized spark-plug? More ribbons, more trophies, more awesomeness, and then, probably total freakin’ world dominance.

So learn her name now, cause you’ll be saying it a lot over the next few years.

Many faces, much awesomeness from Madison "Mad Dawg" Tisa McPhee.

Many faces, much awesomeness from Madison “Mad Dawg” Tisa McPhee.

She can kick your butt in more ways than you can count.

The woman, the myth, the legend … track records fall before her and wild horses come to heel out of respect … she needs two last names, cause one isn’t enough when you’re this awesome.

Casting an epic shadow across the sports world, where she ruled as a high school sprinter and hurdler, dabbled in soccer and volleyball, and continues to ride to multiple medals in any horse race you can put together, she is the chosen one, and it is her birthday.

She is Mad Dawg, the destroyer of nations, the quote machine unleashed, the best damn athlete to ever NOT be awarded Coupeville High School’s Athlete of the Year.

Which is fine, cause we all know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

I’m talking about Madison Tisa McPhee and you know it to be true.

Bow when she passes, cause that’s what you do when the legends walk by.
