CMS Robotics Club clinches state berth

“Technical Difficulties” finished 2nd at regionals and will represent Coupeville at the robotics club state tourney.

Bow before your robot overlords!

Coupeville Middle School sent two Robotics Club teams to regionals this weekend, with one squad punching their ticket to the state championships.

“Technical Difficulties” claimed second place out of 60 teams, and now advances to the finals Feb. 12.

That squad includes Coop Cooper, Jack Ferrel, Andrew Milnes, Dante Muthee, Natalie Perera, Nic Rogers, Lina Shelly, and Gabe Smith.

Coupeville’s second team, “Robotic Wolves,” also earned a top 10 finish, finishing ninth overall.

Lisette Bentabou, Ameilia Crowder, Makayla Hansen, Lucy Humphries, Olivia Kowalewski, Edmund Kunz, and Sidney Van Dyke comprise that team.

Coupeville Elementary PTA wants you!

Stronger together.

The Coupeville Elementary PTA is looking for parents who want to help local students succeed.

The organization is relaunching and would like to add as many new members as possible.

It’s just $15 to sign up, and there are numerous ways for parents to make an impact.

“We understand that not all families can volunteer their time, but there are many other ways families can help,” said PTA leaders in a promotional push on their Facebook page.

“We would love to hear your voices and ideas at meetings on what families/staff would like from the PTA.

“We look forward to meeting past and future families in the new year.”

The PTA helps with programs such as “Readers are Leaders” and the Scholastic Book Fair, while also bestowing grants to teachers.

Mother Nature 1, Whidbey 0

Mother Nature is still in charge.

Dropping a mid-November storm on Whidbey Island Monday, she reminded us all of her power.

A semi-truck almost got blown off of Deception Pass Bridge, I lost power for 16.5 hours (the horror, the horror…), and John Fisken waded out into the blusteriness to get the pics seen above and below.

Oh, Hell no…

This is why you always pack a fresh pair of underwear in the glove compartment…

Monday’s violent wind storm made life difficult for many, but the driver of this truck got an unexpected “thrill.”

The ensuing backup made the trip from the shrimp shack to Deception Pass Bridge a two-hour crawl.

Terrific trio win school board races

It’s 99% official.

With the release of vote totals Friday afternoon, the Island County Auditor’s office has almost reached the end of its duties with the current election.

With the fourth update, 30,270 ballots have been counted, and the “estimated ballots left to count” sits at zero.

Now, all that remains is for the election to be certified Nov. 23.

All three Coupeville School Board races have been decided by a wide margin, guaranteeing no need for a recount.

That means Sherry Phay, who ran unopposed for a second term, will be joined on the board by Nancy Conard and Morgan White, Coupeville grads who handily defeated their opponents.

Current board members Christine Sears and Glenda Merwine were not up for reelection this time out.

The seats won by Conard and White were previously held by Kathleen Anderson and Venessa Matros, who both chose not to run again.

Anderson, who was board president, passed away in September.

 

Current numbers:

 

Sherry Phay — 2,974 votes (100%)

 

Nancy Conard — 3,350 (74.07%)
Paul Rempa — 1,173

 

Morgan White — 3,090 (68.91%)
Ward Sparacio — 1,394
