Well, I amuse myself…

Our story begins…

My drawing skills are … limited.

I can do a passable apple and a cloud, and carrots, eggs, and pencils are within reach.

After that, well, things get downright sketchy from there.

Which is why I kept it simple in this four-page comic book, drawn during a recent competition staged by my nephews.

Is it flawless? Hardly.

But the nine-year-old did laugh and fall off his seat, so, mission accomplished.

Commune with the soil

Get your fingers dirty for a good cause.

Coupeville’s Farm to School program is holding a work party this Saturday, July 10, from 11-2, and you — yes, you — are invited to participate.

The event will teach volunteers “a bit about how to build habitat gardens,” with snacks sweetening the deal.

Things go down at Coupeville Elementary, located at 6 South Main Street, across from Harada Physical Therapy, which occupies the former Videoville building.

The Island County Sheriff’s Department has issued a burn ban, which goes into effect Wednesday, June 30.

So, you’ve got five days left to pay tribute to the one true fire god, Beavis, before you have to shut it down.

Parents go renegade, plan own prom

They’re going Footloose in Cow Town.

No word yet if Kevin Bacon will make an appearance, but Coupeville High School parents are planning their own, non-school Prom for two weeks after graduation.

It goes down Saturday, June 26th at 8 PM at Mile Post 19 Farm (18997 SR 20).

There will be a DJ, food, and bonfire, with a King, Queen, and court announced.

CHS has not held any dances during the 2020-2021 school year because of the ongoing pandemic.

Prom has not been cancelled for our JR’s and Seniors!

An event will be hosted on June 26th (Non school related.)

Our kids deserve this. But the community will need to volunteer and get involved.

Destination is in place and DJ already reserved. We will need to come together to make this great for our children.

Teachers enjoy bountiful harvest

It was more than a well-polished apple.

Community members came together this week and pooled financial resources to show appreciation to local teachers and support staff.

Led by Coupeville Elementary teacher Christi Messner, the effort produced a lunchtime repast to commemorate Teacher Appreciation Week.

But it wasn’t only teachers who benefited, as bus barn employees, custodians, maintenance, open den, food services, and district office workers joined them in chowin’ down.

Sunshine Drip provided the goods, with everyone getting sandwiches, cookies, chips, salad, and a variety of drinks.

Response was strongly positive.

“This is what small town USA is all about!,” said Pamela Davison-Schroeder. “I’ve lived all over this country, I’m proud to call Coupeville home. What an amazing group of beautiful people.”

Messner’s big sister, CHS/CMS Attendance Secretary Barbi Ford, agreed with the sentiment.

“Everyone at CMHS were very appreciative of all the effort that went into this event,” she said. “It was a big hit!

“Thank you Chris, for all you do to support everyone in our school!”

Messner actually raised enough money, she plans to buy gift certificates for local businesses, then hold a drawing to reward some lucky teachers.

And, it’s not too late to get in on the teacher love as our educators continue to provide a lifeline to students during the Age of Coronavirus.
