Sandahl sisters cap successful season

They went for one final early morning row.

Coupeville sisters Sophie and Lucy Sandahl were in the boat Saturday at the crack of dawn, competing in New Jersey at the NCAA D-II women’s rowing championships.

Their Seattle Pacific University varsity 4+ boat, which finished 2nd in a pair of races Friday, claimed 4th place in the grand finale, with Humboldt State edging Central Oklahoma for the title.

Sophie, a senior making her final appearance as a member of the SPU crew, was in the first seat, while Lucy, a junior, was coxswain for the Falcons.

The Seattle Pacific varsity 8+ boat finished 3rd in its championship race.

The weekend performance, with the Sandahl sisters and company competing on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, caps a strong season for the Falcon crew program.

Sophie, who has majored in art history, with a minor in museum studies, and Lucy, who is studying physiology, were both named to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic team this spring.

Their time in the water with SPU has been an extension of athletic careers which blossomed on Whidbey Island.

After moving to Coupeville from South Carolina, Lucy played volleyball and competed in track and field at CHS, while Sophie swam for Oak Harbor High School.

Sandahl sisters row to NCAA Championships

Fly, Falcons, fly.

Seattle Pacific University women’s rowing team, which includes Coupeville sisters Sophie and Lucy Sandahl, is headed to the NCAA D-II Championships.

SPU was one of six schools tabbed for the event, set for May 26-27 in Pennsauken, New Jersey.

The field, which had no automatic qualifiers, was revealed Tuesday during a live selection show.

Cal Poly Humboldt, Central Oklahoma, Embry-Riddle (Florida), Thomas Jefferson, and Western Washington join the Falcons in earning bids.

Each school will field an eight-women boat and a four-women crew.

Sophie Sandahl is a senior at SPU, while Lucy is a junior.

Earlier in the week, the siblings, who are studying Art History and Physiology respectively, were both named to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic team.

Sandahl sisters show off big brains

Smart in high school, smart in college.

Coupeville sisters Sophie and Lucy Sandahl, now attending Seattle Pacific University, were both tabbed Monday for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic women’s rowing team.

SPU landed 10 athletes on the squad, which requires a 3.2 or better GPA.

Crew members must be on the roster for the entire season and are not eligible for the award until their second season with their university.

Sophie, a senior studying Art History and Visual Studies, notched a 3.52 GPA to earn her second appearance on the All-Academic team.

Her younger sister, a junior pursuing a degree in Physiology, came in at 3.28 and is honored by the GNAC for the first time.

Lucy has been the coxswain for SPU’s Varsity +4 boat this season, while Sophie has rowed in both +4 and +8 boats.

The Falcons, who competed at the GNAC Championships this past weekend, will find out Tuesday if they make the cut for the season-ending NCAA D-II Championships.

After moving to Whidbey Island from South Carolina, the Sandahl sisters attended local schools and were top scholar athletes.

Lucy graduated from Coupeville High School after playing volleyball and track and field for the Wolves, while Sophie graduated from Oak Harbor High School, where she swam for the Wildcats.

They live for that water life

Sister, my sister, one more time.

Coupeville’s Sophie and Lucy Sandahl were in the same boat Saturday as the Seattle Pacific University crew team competed at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships in Dexter, Oregon.

Lucy was the coxswain in the varsity 4+ boat, while her older sister rowed out of position #2.

In a day filled with incredibly close races, Central Oklahoma earned the team title, while SPU finished fourth.

The Falcons now wait to find out if they will head to Cherry Hill, New Jersey May 26-28 for the NCAA D-II Championships.

The field for that season-ending rumble will be announced during a selection show this coming Tuesday, May 16.

After moving to Whidbey Island from South Carolina, the Sandahl sisters sparkled in the classroom and in the arena.

Lucy played volleyball and competed in track and field before graduating from Coupeville High School, while Sophie transferred to Oak Harbor, where she was a member of the Wildcat swim team.

Wolf grad earns college rowing honor

Lucy leads the way.

The Great Northwest Athletic Conference tabbed Seattle Pacific University’s Varsity +4 boat as its Crew of the Week Monday, the third time a Falcon rowing shell has been honored this season.

The women being hailed this time around include Coupeville grad Lucy Sandahl, who is the coxswain for the Falcon V4+ squad.

She and teammates Megan Popielak, Anna Boatman, Megan Rouse, and Bella Lisenby were honored for their performance at this past weekend’s Windermere Cup.

That event, which kicks off boating season in Washington state, went down on the Montlake Cut in Seattle and was hosted by the University of Washington.

Sandahl and her group rank first in the NCAA West Region standings heading into the GNAC Championships May 12-13 in Oregon.

A 2020 graduate from Coupeville High School, Lucy, whose older sister Sophie also rows for SPU, was a standout volleyball and track and field athlete during her days as a Wolf.
