Hailey Hammer told her coach she was only at 45%, but she used that 45% well.

Still recovering from an ankle injury suffered during basketball season, the Coupeville High School junior moved a little tentatively at times during the softball season opener Thursday. Except when she was at bat.

Than the power-hitting first baseman blasted away, knocking home a pair of runs and teaming with sweet-swinging senior Breeanna Messner to spark the Wolves to a huge 6-3 home victory over arch-rival South Whidbey.

Erupting for a three-spot in both the first and fourth innings, Coupeville collected some well-placed hits, then mixed them in nicely with 10 walks and a couple of wildly thrown balls by the Falcons.

South Whidbey’s starting pitcher struggled, perhaps bothered by the cold, crisp air and slight breeze that trickled across the prairie, and the Wolves jumped on her quickly.

Three of the first five batters in the bottom of the first scored, and Coupeville was on the cusp of really breaking out a big inning.

Madeline Roberts led off with a walk, scampered to second on a passed ball, took third on a wild pitch and eventually strolled home when Messner crunched a laser shot over second for the season’s first RBI.

After a walk to McKayla Bailey, two runs came in on a ground-out by Hammer. The second run scored when a Falcon airmailed the ball over the third baseman’s head for an error.

The fourth was almost a repeat, with a mixture of walks and a couple crucial hits staking the Wolves to another three-spot.

Emily Licence and Roberts eked out back-to-back walks to lead things off, then Bailey and Hammer packaged RBI singles around a free run when a South Whidbey throw to first landed somewhere down around Oak Harbor.

With runs to play with, Bailey, Coupeville’s starting hurler, came right at the Falcons. The junior flamethrower struck out eight and only had a brief bit of trouble when she tired a bit in the seventh, giving up a pair of late runs on wild pitches.

Even then, she bore down and found one last burst of adrenaline, ending the game on a nasty strike out, stranding two runners as her last pitch popped with conviction into Messner’s glove behind the plate.

Bailey was backed by a strong defense, with Madeline Strasburg coming up with a big-time catch in center, Roberts pulling off a smart tag play on a runner headed to third and Emily Coulter gobbling up everything that came her way at second.

Coulter was one of three first-time starters for Coupeville. The sophomore was joined by junior right fielder Monica Vidoni and freshman third baseman Licence.

Freshmen Tiffany Briscoe (pinch runner) and Jae LeVine (pinch hitter) also debuted for the Wolves.

The sun is out, but no one is playing.

The after effects of rain washed away both scheduled Coupeville High School games Wednesday afternoon.

The Wolf baseball squad was supposed to welcome South Whidbey to town for the middle game of a three-game season opening series, but, even with the rain having stopped earlier in the day, the CHS field was not recovered enough for play.

Or, Coupeville coach Willie Smith just misses the warmth of a gym.

“It’s cold and windy and muddy and I’m older and wimpier … and it’s cold!!!,” Smith wailed, while giggling.

The game has been rescheduled for Thursday (4 PM), which will bump the JV baseball game planned for that day. That game will likely jump to Saturday, if things work out.

The tweaking puts baseball up against softball, as the CHS fast pitch squad will attempt (again) to open its season Thursday (also 4 PM), when it also hosts South Whidbey.

The softballers were turned away from a trip to Port Townsend Monday when that school’s infield disappeared underwater.

Tuesday they were supposed to host South Whidbey, but a scheduling snafu with Friday Harbor bumped that game to Thursday.

A trip to Archbishop Thomas Murphy Wednesday fell through due to weather, so try #4 will come Thursday.

One game into spring and we already have a winner for oddest reason for a postponed game.

It wasn’t the persistent wind that kept the Coupeville High School softball squad from boarding a ferry and venturing over to Port Townsend for a non-league season opener Monday.

It was rain. But not rain from today so much, as rain from the last couple of days.

CHS coaches David and Amy King were on their way to meet their team at the school when the word came down.

And that word, according to the Port Townsend Leader’s Facebook page, is that the infield in Port Townsend was UNDERWATER.

Not wet. Not damp. Not muddy. Completely underwater. Like “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”-style.

So now the Wolves will open their season on the road at ATM Wednesday. Their home opener against South Whidbey, originally scheduled for Tuesday, was just bumped to Thursday to fix a scheduling snafu for Friday Harbor.

Yes, there will be a test on that later.

The home opener, could, of course, be preempted if Noah and his ark were to make a surprise appearance out on the prairie in the next 48 hours, signalling another infield sinking beneath the sea.

The Port Townsend game should be rescheduled at some point during the season.

Cue the rain. Cue the wind. It’s time for spring sports on Whidbey.

Did you really think the gentle, balmy, blue sky-drenched weather that we’ve seen the last week would last into the start of the actual seasons?

Oh, you sad, sad fool…

Well, weather or not, the 2014 spring sports season — the last one for Coupeville High School in the 1A/2A Cascade Conference — officially kicks off today, when the Wolf boys’ soccer squad hosts a jamboree (2 PM) at Micky Clark Field.

Lake Stevens and South Whidbey are in town, the event officially puts a stamp on Kyle Nelson’s hiring as Wolf coach (replacing the retired legend, Paul Mendes), and it will go on, regardless of weather.

Soccer doesn’t stop for anything short of a hurricane, and then it depends on what category of hurricane we’re talking about.

The lone CHS golfer, two-time state meet qualifier Christine Fields, was actually supposed to kick off the new season Friday, but excess rain caused a scheduled match at Useless Bay Golf and Country Club between South Whidbey, Overlake and the Lone Wolf to be postponed.

Monday, weather permitting, the season will move into being a full-on reality, with baseball traveling to South Whidbey, softball hopping across to Port Townsend and girls’ tennis welcoming Port Townsend to town.

Tuesday, Friday Harbor comes to Coupeville for soccer and tennis, Fields and her Falcon traveling mates go to Bush and softball squares off at home with arch-rival South Whidbey and its new coach.

Get your bets in now. How many games will be postponed and rescheduled due to weather in ’14?

I’m saying 71, and I feel pretty confident in that number.

So, here’s the plan.

Tomorrow, Saturday, Mar. 15, is David King’s birthday.

So, the much-revered Coupeville High School girls’ basketball and softball coach will probably be busy most of the day with cake-related business.

Which means he won’t be expecting anything to go down today.

Which is why everyone should go by the CHS softball field today after school, and, as you drive by, honk your horns and scream “Happy birthday, coach King!!”

You know you want to do it. You know you must do it.
