The bats were boomin’, the catcher’s mitt was poppin’, and the Wolves couldn’t be stopped.

As the Coupeville High School varsity softball squad shredded visiting Darrington Wednesday, wanderin’ photo snapper John Fisken did what he does.

The pics above and below are courtesy him, but there’s more where that came from.

It was beautifully brutal.

Putting together a nearly flawless performance Wednesday, the Coupeville High School varsity softball squad put a hurtin’ on Darrington.

Rapping out 22 hits, while ace hurler Izzy Wells tossed a perfect game, the Wolves shredded the visiting Loggers 20-0 in a game mercy-ruled in the bottom of the third inning.

The victory lifts Coupeville to 2-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League action, 4-1 overall, with a doubleheader at Friday Harbor up next on the schedule.

With just a narrow loss to 1A power Lynden Christian preventing a perfect start to the season, the Wolves have been clicking on all cylinders.

Wednesday’s tilt showcased Coupeville in all its glory, with Izzy Wells carving up Darrington like Freddy Kreuger dispatching sleepy teens back in his prime cinematic slashing days.

Eight of the nine Loggers to walk to the plate went down on strikeouts, with one lone hitter meekly grounding out to Wolf third-baseman Madison McMillan.

At the plate, the Wolves sprayed hits in every direction, with 10 different players getting at least one base-knock.

Fab frosh Mia Farris had the biggest blow, crushing a hard liner into the gap in right field before careening around the basepaths for a home run.

That was one of eight extra-base hits for the Wolves, as Audrianna Shaw, Savina Wells, and Izzy Wells collected triples to go along with two-baggers by Taylor Brotemarkle, Allie Lucero, Shaw, and Maya Lucero.

“The girls came out swinging big bats from the first hitter to the last,” said CHS coach Kevin McGranahan. “We were on a mission tonight and they really showed what they can do if we all do our job.

“Hard to say who was someone to focus on, because they all were hitting tonight.”

Wednesday varsity stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 3 singles, 1 double
Mia Farris — 2 singles, 1 home run
Gwen Gustafson — 2 singles
Allie Lucero — 1 single, 1 double
Maya Lucero — 1 single, 1 double, 1 walk
Madison McMillan — 2 singles, 1 walk
Sofia Peters — 1 single
Audrianna Shaw — 1 double, 1 triple, 1 walk
Izzy Wells — 1 triple, 1 walk
Savina Wells — 2 singles, 1 triple

Chloe Marzocca and the Wolf JV cruised to a win.

Unexpected JV win:

No one knew Darrington had a JV team, so Coupeville was caught off guard when one unexpectedly appeared.

Which didn’t stop the Wolves.

Plucked straight from the practice field, Coupeville’s second squad — not in full uniform — jumped on the field and rolled to a 10-2 win in a two-inning scrimmage game.

No book was kept, but McGranahan praised the pitching performance of freshman Chloe Marzocca and the booming bat of 8th grader Teagan Calkins, who hit a walk-off inside-the-park home run.

Most importantly, the unofficial bout gave both schools a chance to get more playing time for young players, which bodes well for the continued growth of softball in the NWL.

“Darrington is a young JV team with mostly 8th graders,” McGranahan said. “So, it’s great they want to play and develop, so the program can grow.”

We’re starting to see some movement.

As we work our way towards the end of March, Northwest 2B/1B League teams are ramping up and beginning to play more conference tilts, accounting for some jockeying in the standings.

If weather permits, the week ahead will keep that trend going.

Coupeville High School baseball has four games in four days — all NWL bouts — hosting Mount Vernon Christian Tuesday and Darrington Wednesday.

After that, the Wolves head to Friday Harbor to face their biggest hardball rival in a Friday afternoon doubleheader.

Meanwhile, the CHS softball squad hosts Darrington, then plays its own twin-bill on Friday Harbor, while Wolf girls tennis travels to Oak Harbor Friday for a non-conference match-up.

Where things sit through Mar. 27:

Northwest League baseball:

School League Overall
Coupeville 1-0 2-3
Friday Harbor 1-0 3-1
Orcas Island 1-0 1-1

Allie Lucero crunched a home run Saturday as Coupeville softball thrashed South Whidbey. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

The bats were booming.

South Whidbey whacked back-to-back home runs Saturday, but the Coupeville High School varsity softball squad responded with a barrage of base-knocks.

Rapping out 20 hits, including a tater of their own, the Wolves held off their Island rivals, winning 15-5 on the road at Langley.

The non-conference victory gives CHS a home-and-away season sweep of the Falcons, and lifts Coupeville to 3-1 on the season.

Saturday’s tilt was a game the Wolves led from start to finish, but also one that they didn’t fully put away until the day’s final two innings.

Up 6-2 through five frames, Coupeville pushed three runs across in the sixth, then slapped an exclamation point on things with a six-run surge in the seventh inning.

That capped a game in which the Wolves jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a half inning of play.

Pushing its advantage out to 6-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, Coupeville was cruising on both sides of the ball.

Until Chanel Sterba and Morgan Batchelor broke through with consecutive longballs.

If she was ruffled, Wolf hurler Izzy Wells never showed it, promptly setting the next six Falcons down on strikeouts.

The senior flame thrower recorded a season-best 17 K’s on the afternoon, requiring her teammates to only record four outs on their own.

With the game still close, Coupeville broke things open in the late going.

The sixth-inning rally started with Wolf frosh Mia Farris getting plunked by a wayward pitch, followed by a thunderous triple off the bat of senior Audrianna Shaw.

From there, a two-bagger from Savina Wells — which narrowly missed being a home run — and singles by Madison McMillan and Gwen Gustafson kept the good times going.

Things really got fun in the seventh, however, with Coupeville raining down eight hits in the frame, including Allie Lucero tagging a moon shot to join the exclusive homer-hittin’ society.

Doubles from Izzy Wells, Farris, and Taylor Brotemarkle didn’t travel quite as far, but also dealt severe damage to South Whidbey’s hopes.

“Late in the game we finally started hitting our stride offensively and got some runs to put the distance on them and put the game away,” said CHS coach Kevin McGranahan.

“We had some good hits when we were being aggressive.”

Saturday stats:

Taylor Brotemarkle — 1 single, 1 double
Mia Farris — 1 double, 1 walk
Gwen Gustafson — 2 singles
Lily Leedy — 1 single
Allie Lucero — 1 single, 1 home run
Maya Lucero — 1 single
Madison McMillan — 1 single, 1 walk
Melanie Navarro — 1 single
Audrianna Shaw — 1 single, 1 triple, 1 walk
Izzy Wells — 3 singles, 1 double
Savina Wells — 2 singles, 1 double
