Other than the weather, CHS fans have had plenty to be happy about this spring.

Is the price of gas going to drop?

That’s the question on the mind of Coupeville High School Athletic Director Willie Smith, as Wolf spring sports teams hit the road for five of seven contests next week.

Girls’ tennis has the week off — from competition, if not practice — but baseball, softball, and track and field all will listen to the sound of the wheels on the bus goin’ round ‘n round.

Baseball and softball travel to Concrete Tuesday and Darrington Thursday, before closing out the week at home Saturday against La Conner.

That weekend doubleheader is Senior Night for the Wolf diamond players, with both games set to start at 1:00 PM.

Meanwhile, the CHS track team, or part of it at least, travels to Lakewood Saturday for the Sunny and 70 Invitational, the final meet before the postseason kicks off.

Based on “spring” weather so far, it’ll be cloudy, windy, wet and 45 degrees, no matter what the event is called.

As we head into a new week, a look at current standings for teams which keep track of wins and losses:

Like this pic, the Northwest 2B/1B League standings are starting to come into focus. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

It’s the most important week of the season.

So far.

With spring sports in full flower, Coupeville High School teams will be in action every day next week between Tuesday and Saturday.

Mother Nature willing.

For Wolf softball, Tuesday’s home tilt with Friday Harbor looms large, as the result directly impacts any playoff hopes.

Win, and the postseason is still in play. Lose, and it’s not.

Either way, the Wolves also travel to Orcas Island Saturday for a game which marks 75% of the regular season being played.

Coupeville’s baseball squad will need to keep an eye on pitch counts, with four games in five days on the schedule.

The Wolves host Friday Harbor Tuesday, travel to South Whidbey Wednesday, are back home Thursday for Mount Vernon Christian, and hit the road Saturday to Orcas.

The first of those games will go a long way to determining which 2B squad from the Northwest 2B/1B League earns a state playoff bid, while the MVC matchup has epic league title implications.

Not quite as busy, but still very active, are CHS track and field and girls’ tennis.

The netters host Friday Harbor on Friday, while the runners, jumpers, and throwers have two meets.

The Wolves host the Coupeville Classic Invitational Wednesday, which doubles as Senior Night, before hitting the road Saturday for an appearance at the GearUp Eason Invitational in Snohomish.

As they gas up the busses and prepare the postgame snacks, a look at current league standings for those sports which have win/loss records.

Some at home, some on the road.

Weather willing, three of four Coupeville High School spring sports teams are scheduled to play this coming week.

Grabbing headliner status is Wolf softball, which hosts Darrington Tuesday, Apr. 11 in a battle between Northwest 2B/1B League heavyweights.

After that, CHS hits the road Apr. 13 and Apr. 15, with trips to La Conner and Onalaska, respectively.

The second, and longest, of those bus rides is for a non-conference doubleheader, as the Wolves want to get the most from their Eastern Washington trek.

Meanwhile, Wolf baseball joins its softball counterparts in hosting Darrington and traveling to La Conner, while Coupeville girls’ tennis plays a home-and-away setup with non-league rival South Whidbey.

The netters go to Langley Apr. 11, then host the Falcons Apr. 14.

Taking the week off — at least in terms of attending meets — is Wolf track and field, which will focus on practice and recovery from a busy schedule.

As we head into a new week of wondering whether Mother Nature will cooperate, a look at current league standings:

Northwest League baseball:

School League Overall
MV Christian 5-0 5-2
Coupeville 3-1 5-3
Friday Harbor 3-1 3-3

The lightest week of the season looms.

With spring break arriving for Coupeville schools, the Wolves have an extremely limited schedule over the next seven days.

Girls tennis is completely off, while track and field competes just once, traveling to Bellingham Saturday, Apr. 8 for the Birger Solberg Invitational.

CHS baseball doesn’t return to the field until the same day, when it will be in Concrete for a road game.

Meanwhile, the only Wolf team with multiple events on the schedule is softball, which plays a makeup game Thursday, Apr. 6 at home against Cedar Park Christian-Bothell, then hits the road to Concrete two days later.

Where things stand heading into the slow part of the season:

Northwest League baseball:

School League Overall
MV Christian 5-0 5-2
Coupeville 3-1 5-3
Friday Harbor 1-1 1-3
Darrington 2-3 3-3
Orcas Island 2-3 4-3
Concrete 0-2 0-2
La Conner 0-3 1-5

Northwest League girls tennis:

Pristine so far.

The three Coupeville High School spring sports teams to keep track of win/loss records are all undefeated in Northwest 2B/1B League play.

Of course, since the new season is still barely upon us, a combined 3-0 mark in conference rumbles isn’t yet enough to earn the Wolves any league titles.

But it’s a good start.

Mother Nature willing, Coupeville teams have a busy week ahead, with each of the four spring programs having at least two events on the schedule.

Wolf softball and baseball top things with three games apiece.

The hardball nine hit the road Mar. 28 and Mar. 30, playing Friday Harbor and Mount Vernon Christian, respectively, then close the week at home Apr. 1 with a tilt against visiting Orcas Island.

Meanwhile, the softball sluggers travel to Friday Harbor with baseball, before hosting Cedar Park Christian-Bothell Mar. 31 and Orcas the next day.

Coupeville’s net crew will be in Granite Falls Mar. 27, before playing at home Mar. 31 against Friday Harbor.

And finally, Wolf track and field has a pair of road trips, heading to Mount Vernon Mar. 29 for a league meet, before making an appearance Mar. 31 at the Trojan Twilight meet in Meridian.

As we look towards the week ahead, a peek at current win/loss marks:

Northwest League baseball:

School League Overall
MV Christian 2-0 2-2
Orcas Island 2-0 4-0
Coupeville 1-0 3-2
Friday Harbor 0-0 0-2
Concrete 0-1 0-1
La Conner 0-1 1-2
Darrington 0-3 1-3

Northwest League girls tennis:

School League Overall
Coupeville 1-0 1-1
Friday Harbor 0-1 0-1

Northwest League softball:

Orcas Island 1-1 1-4
Friday Harbor 0-0 3-2
Concrete 0-1 0-1
La Conner 0-1 0-5
