The finish line approaches

Meanwhile, Savina Wells goes about her business.

One week to go.

The regular season comes to a close for fall sports as October winds its way towards Halloween.

Barring a football upset (more on that in a second), every Coupeville High School team with the exception of volleyball (and maybe cross country) wraps play by Thursday of this coming week.

Wolf boys soccer exits with back-to-back road games at Orcas Island Oct. 26 and Providence Classical Christian Oct. 28, while girls soccer closes at Friday Harbor Oct. 26.

Cross country travels to Lakewood Oct. 28 for tri-districts. A top-two team finish or a top-14 individual time advances you to state.

Football is the only CHS team at home next week, hosting Friday Harbor Oct. 28 (that’s a Thursday).

Lose, and the Wolves are done.

Win, avenging a 32-6 loss from earlier in the season, and Coupeville finishes in a tie with Friday Harbor.

If that happens, the two teams meet again two days later at a neutral site to play half of a game, with a trip to state at stake.

Meanwhile, the lone Wolf team assured of playing in Nov. is volleyball.

A road trip to Mount Vernon Christian Oct. 28 ends the regular season, then Coupeville is off to La Conner Nov. 3 for the district tourney.

Once there, the Wolves will need to beat Auburn Adventist and the two-time defending state champ tourney hosts to earn a ticket to state.

Welcome to crunch time

Sophie Martin is a force of nature.

Time to get tense.

As fall sports unspool and we head deeper into October, the chase for playoff berths becomes more frantic.

Every game counts, but late-season games often matter even more.

What we know at this point — Coupeville High School girls and boys soccer are not playoff-bound, while volleyball absolutely is, and football will likely join the spikers in the postseason.

Meanwhile, cross country is its own thing, with its own unique path to follow, and boys tennis has been benched since the season was called-off before it began.

The week ahead is perhaps the busiest single stretch of days for Wolf teams, at least in terms of home games — and especially if you include middle school volleyball in that equation.

CHS cross country hosts the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships Thursday, Oct. 21, with Fort Casey State Park the hub for all activity,

Meanwhile, girls soccer hits the road Oct. 20 to play front-runner Mount Vernon Christian, and football hosts Cascade (Leavenworth) Oct. 22 for Homecoming.

Boys soccer and volleyball are the most active Wolf programs, combining for six games and a tournament in a six-day span.

The CHS booters host Friday Harbor Oct. 19, travel to Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood Oct. 21, and host Lopez Island Oct. 23, with the last of those games being Coupeville’s Senior Night.

Meanwhile, Wolf volleyball travels to South Whidbey Oct. 18, hosts La Conner Oct. 19 and Friday Harbor Oct. 21, then closes the week Oct. 23 at the Island Invitational in Langley.

Race for top spot heats up

Coupeville football had an unexpected week off after injuries forced it to cancel a non-conference game.

Things are starting to drop into place.

The further we get into the fall sports season, the more the frontrunners become clear.

Defending Northwest 2B/1B League champs La Conner (volleyball), Orcas Island (boys soccer), and Mount Vernon Christian (girls soccer) are all back in the lead, while Friday Harbor (football) is rebounding nicely after losing a season to Covid.

While it doesn’t sit in first-place in any sport, Coupeville is solid, currently second-best in volleyball and football.

Originally it seemed like Wolf girls soccer was also in second, but it turns out a score was misreported for the Friday Harbor vs. La Conner game, momentarily bumping CHS down a rung.

That could change this coming week, however, as the Coupeville boosters host Friday Harbor Tuesday.

Toss in home games against La Conner Thursday and non-conference foe Sultan Saturday (that’s Senior Night), and the Wolves have a busy week — and no bus rides.

Boys soccer and football only have a single game apiece, with both teams hitting the road Friday.

The booters are off to Lopez Island, while the gridiron giants travel to La Conner — if both the Wolves and Braves football teams have enough healthy players after both teams cancelled games this past week.

Coupeville’s cross country team doesn’t compete again until the league championships Oct. 21, but volleyball will be busy, with a pair of matches.

The Wolf spikers travel to Orcas Tuesday, where they will attempt to cement their hold on second-place, before hosting Darrington Thursday.

New month, new standings

Time for some home cooking.

After a week where more events were on the road than not, Coupeville High School’s fall sports teams will get the reverse this coming week.

Boys soccer has the sweetest deal, playing at home Tuesday (La Conner), Thursday (Mount Vernon Christian), and Saturday (Providence Classical Christian).

Wolf football is at home as well, hosting Meridian Saturday in a non-conference game, while both volleyball and girls soccer have mixed schedules.

The spikers play three days in a row, starting with a home contest Tuesday against Concrete.

After that comes back-to-back road trips Wednesday and Thursday, with La Conner and MVC the respective destinations.

Girls soccer starts with a trip to Mount Vernon Tuesday, to play the C-Team of a 4A school.

After that, the Wolf booters arrive back at Mickey Clark Field Thursday for a matchup with Northwest 2B/1B League big shot Mount Vernon Christian.

The lone team to not compete at home this coming week is cross country, which takes a bus to Lakewood Saturday for the annual Hole in the Wall Invite.

It’s a war out here

After a week off, Scott Hilborn and Co. open Northwest 2B/1B League play at home against La Conner.

The view is nice from the top.

Two of the four Coupeville High School fall sports teams which keep win/loss records find themselves in first place as of this morning.

The high-flying Wolf volleyball team sits alone at 3-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, while the CHS girls are tied at 1-0 with defending champs Mount Vernon Christian.

Now, both of those teams, and Coupeville’s football, boys soccer, and cross country programs head into a busy week.

The Wolf spikers host Cedar Park Christian-Bothell Monday in a non-conference bout, then travel to Darrington Wednesday for a league rumble.

After that, volleyball closes the week with an appearance Saturday at a tourney in Sultan.

Coupeville’s soccer squads each play twice in the week ahead, with the girls traveling to MVC Tuesday, before hosting non-league rival Granite Falls Thursday.

The Wolf boys host Grace Academy Tuesday, and are off to visit Friday Harbor on Friday.

Out on the gridiron, Coupeville returns to action after a week off, hosting La Conner Friday in a major league battle.

Rounding out things, the CHS cross country program — the one which doesn’t keep win/loss records — runs three times.

Tuesday, the Wolves are at Orcas, Friday they’re home at Fort Casey, and Saturday brings a visit to the Roller Coaster Trail Run, hosted by King’s.
