This is shaping up to be a magnificent spring.

Longtime track guru Randy King must be chuckling to himself as he unleashes holy terror on the Cascade Conference, with one heat-seeking missile after another flying by wearing the red and black of Coupeville High School.

Freshman Makana Stone simply has no clue of what it feels like to finish second in a high school race. Her spotless 10-0 mark over the first three meets includes two wins apiece in the 100, 200, 400, 4 x 200 relay and 4 x 400 relay.

Nipping at her heels is senior Madison Tisa McPhee, a state veteran who has won eight of her ten events in 2013.

A superior hurdler and relay runner, the only race she has lost so far was a 100 in which she finished two slots behind Stone, while setting a PR.

The other event she “failed” to win was her debut performance in the high jump, where she walked out, said “what the heck, I’ll try it” and went and claimed third.

Dang!

Toss in senior Jai’Lysa Hoskins, who has run a leg on five winning relay teams, and fast-rising frosh Sylvia Hurlburt, who has been a winner three times, and the Wolf girls are rich in talent.

And that’s not even mentioning Marisa Etzell, Nicole Becker, distance ace Erin Rosenkranz or any of the throwers.

Someone check. Randy King may have even cracked a smile.

Fun fact. No Coupeville High School sports team has lost at home this spring.

Baseball, softball and girls’ tennis are all 2-0 in games played in town, while track and boys’ soccer have yet to compete on their home turf.

Overall, the Wolves are 10-5, with undefeated tennis (3-0) and softball (2-0) squads joining CHS golfers Austin and Christine Fields (a combined 3-0).

Baseball is 2-2 with back-to-back wins and soccer … well, the booters (0-3) have been a bit snake-bit so far, with a pair of 1-0 losses in which tying goals were thwarted by dastardly means (a huge muddle, an extraordinary save by a goalie).

Track doesn’t have the numbers to compete for meet titles with the mostly 2A squads that 1A Coupeville faces, but freshman Makana Stone is 10-0 so far in sprints and relay races.

Well, that didn’t take very long.

In just their second try, the quartet of seniors Madison Tisa McPhee and Jai’Lysa Hoskins and freshmen Sylvia Hurlburt and Makana Stone smashed Coupeville High School’s record in the 4 x 200 relay.

Coming against strong competition at the Tri-district Preview meet in Shoreline Saturday, the Wolves romped, blowing King’s best away by more than six seconds.

It was a strong day all around for Stone and Tisa McPhee, who each won four events at the seven-team event, which was set up to give athletes a chance to compete on the same track they will run at during the tri-district meet in May. That meet is the final stop before the state meet in Cheney.

Tisa McPhee swept two hurdles events and ran on two winning relay teams, while Stone blitzed the field in the 100 and 200, then joined her older teammate on winning 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 relay units. The victories lifted the freshman to a perfect 10-for-10 in her short high school running career.

Matthew Hampton was the brightest star on the boys side of the standings, rolling to a win in the 3200, while Nick Streubel grabbed a PR in the shot put, finishing fourth in an ultra-competitive field.

The meet drew 1A schools Bush, Chimacum, King’s and Coupeville and 2B squads from La Conner, Concrete and Seattle Lutheran.

Makana Stone WAY out in front. (John Fisken photo)

Makana Stone liked winning so much, she decided to double up her fun.

After winning both of her events in her first track meet, the fleet-footed Coupeville High School freshman roared to four wins Thursday in a three-team showdown in the wilds of Sultan.

Running against 2A competition from Granite Falls and the host Turks, Stone and her 1A Wolf teammates acquitted themselves nicely, winning five events on both the boys and girls sides of the meet.

While it doesn’t have the raw numbers to win overall meet titles, Coupeville finished solidly in second in both the boys (behind Granite Falls) and girls (behind Sultan) final standings.

Stone blitzed the world, sweeping the sprints (100, 200, 400), then running a leg on a winning 4 x 200 squad that included Madison Tisa McPhee, fellow freshman phenom Sylvia Hurlburt and Jai’Lysa Hoskins.

Tisa McPhee easily buried her foes in the 300 hurdles, while Nick Streubel flexed his muscles on the boys side, winning the shot put and discus.

Streubel’s hurl of 120 feet, one inch in the discus was a personal record.

Hot on his heels was sophomore teammate Carson Risner, who jumped an astounding 17 feet from his first try a week ago. In only his second meet, the son of legendary Wolf thrower Jennie Cross showed he may give Streubel a run for his money in the discus.

The Wolf boys added victories in the 800 from Matthew Hampton and in both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays. The Wolves used six different runners in those events, with veteran Stephen Edwards and freshman Jared Helmstadter pulling double duty.
