Tyler King, still numero uno.

One Tyler King to rule them all.

Through the “modern era” of state high school track and field state meets (1963-2024), no Coupeville athlete has brought home as many medals as Randy and Laurie’s youngest child.

He sits with 11, including two state titles, one slim medal ahead of older brother Kyle, who notched 10 during his CHS days.

This past weekend, three more Wolves — Reese Wilkinson, Axel Marshall, and Nick Guay — joined the club, pushing it to 90 members.

Meanwhile Carly Burt and Cael Wilson each claimed their second career medal, moving up the list.

There are five active Wolves on the list, headed up by Lyla Stuurmans, who has three medals and counting with one more season of eligibility left.

Burt, Wilson, Marshall, and Zac Tackett can also return next spring, as could Monroe Myles, who we’re not currently counting as active, as she didn’t participate this year.

She earned three medals as a sophomore in 2023, however, and could return for a senior swan song.

As one season slips away, and the work already begins for another for some, a look at the CHS all-time medal count:

It’s hammer time for (l to r) Katie Marti, Erica McGrath, and Mason Butler. (Bob Martin photo)

There’s a few more stops left on the journey.

While the state track and field championships wrapped up Saturday in Yakima, three Coupeville throwers headed to Olympia Sunday for the Washington State High School Hammer Championships.

The event, which is not sanctioned by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, drew 52 chuckers to the Evergreen State College.

Wolf junior Katie Marti finished 18th in the girls’ competition, nailing a PR of 80 feet, 11 inches, while senior Erica McGrath was 21st at 63-11.

On the boys’ side, junior Mason Butler claimed 23rd, launching a throw of 78-06, almost five feet better than his previous PR.

Kimberly Beard of King’s and Dylan Gilliland of Tumwater took home top honors.

And there’s still one more track event ahead on the schedule, as Coupeville junior Lyla Stuurmans is slated to compete in the heptathlon May 31-June 1 at the Washington State Combined Events Championship.

That all-star showdown goes down at Lake Stevens High School.

Coupeville High School senior Reese Wilkinson shattered a school record in the discus which had stood for 34 years. (Abbie Martin photo)

For 34 years, no one has come close to Jennie (Cross) Prince.

Then along came Reese.

Putting together the best afternoon of her track and field career on the final day of her high school athletic career, Coupeville senior Reese Wilkinson made history Saturday at the 2B state championship meet in Yakima.

Chucking the discus 121 feet, 10 inches, she broke her own PR by almost 10 and a half feet and took down the school mark of 120-03 set back in 1990.

While Prince still holds the CHS girls’ record in the shot put — under her maiden name — she was thrilled to see one of her marks finally toppled by the young women who have followed in her footsteps.

“Awesome!!! Congratulations to Reese!!!!” she said.

Wilkinson, like the woman she will replace on the school’s track record board, finished 2nd at state, one of three medals claimed by Coupeville athletes on the final day of the three-day extravaganza.

Sophomore Carly Burt sailed to a 5th place finish in the pole vault, while senior Nick Guay notched another 5th, this one in the high jump.

The trio join freshmen Axel Marshall and junior Cael Wilson, who finished 5th and 8th, respectively, in the pole vault Friday.

Burt and Wilson have two state meet medals to their credit now, with more time to add to that total.

Among active Wolves, they trail only current junior Lyla Stuurmans, who has three to her credit.

Marshall, Guay, and Wilkinson became the 88th, 89th, and 90th Wolves to earn a medal since the modern era of state track and field meets began in 1964.

The pole vaulters got them on the scoreboard.

Freshman Axel Marshall and junior Cael Wilson captured Coupeville’s first medals Friday during day two of the 2B state track and field championships.

Competing at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima, Marshall soared 18 inches higher than his previous PR to finish fifth, while Wilson claimed 8th in the event for a second-straight season.

Marshall is the 88th Wolf to earn a state meet medal in the modern era (1963-2024).

While the duo were the only medal winners for Coupeville, the Wolves did nail down six PR’s on the day.

The three-day meet wraps Saturday, kicking off with the “opening ceremonies,” then getting into another full day of competition.

Coupeville will have Aleera Kent (3200), Carson Field (3200), Nick Guay (High Jump), Carly Burt (Pole Vault), Aleksia Jump (Pole Vault), Reese Wilkinson (Discus), and Zac Tackett (Discus) in action during the finale.

And so it begins.

The three-day 2B state track and field championships kicked off Thursday in Yakima, with two of Coupeville’s 18 athletes competing.

Wolf junior Carson Field and freshman Kayla Crane ran in the 1600 just hours after getting off the bus.

Field finished 15th in four minutes, 59.08 seconds, while Crane hit the line in 16th in a time of 6:13.63.

Things pick up considerably Friday, with Coupeville athletes slated to compete in nine events at the Don Holder Track at Zaepfel Stadium.

Various Wolves will vie in finals in shot put, javelin, triple jump, and pole vault, as well as in prelims in the 200, 400, 800, and 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays.
