Prescott sizzles, Mavericks battle

West coast, East coast, she’s dynamite in every venue.

Coupeville grad Chelsea Prescott had another well-balanced performance Tuesday, as she and the Medaille College volleyball team pushed a league heavyweight hard.

Alfred State College eventually escaped with a 25-20, 25-22, 25-17 win in Buffalo, but it wasn’t easy.

The victory lifts the Pioneers to 3-0 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play, 12-1 overall, while Medaille falls to 1-3, 4-11.

Prescott was everywhere on the floor Tuesday, piling up four kills, eight digs, two assists, two service aces, a solo block, and seven points.

Mavericks teammates Halle Bogas (eight kills), Baylee Romano (nine digs), and Haley Kennedy (17 assists) also had strong performances.

Alfred State, which has won eight straight, was led by Nayomie Ferrer (30 assists) and Karleigh Haines (15 digs).

Prescott, a freshman at Medaille, has started all 15 matches this season, playing in all 48 sets.

She’s racked up 77 kills, 116 digs, 15 aces, 10 assists, two solo blocks, six block assists, and 97 points.

Medaille returns to action this Saturday, Oct. 16, when it plays at the RIT Invitational.

The Mavericks are slated to face Nazareth College and tourney host Rochester Institute of Technology.

Young Wolves scrappy and strong

“Today was by far the best we have played this season yet.”

While both Coupeville Middle School volleyball teams fell to powerhouse King’s on the road Monday, Wolf coach Cris Matochi came away quite pleased.

“Our team has improved substantially, and today we had a bunch of incredible plays,” he said. “We also have improved our skills, and the girls stepped in and fought really hard.

“Coach Katie (Kiel) and I are extremely proud of these girls, and I could’ve not asked for a better performance from them.”

Coupeville, which was wrapping up a three-game road trip to start the season, knew going in the task would be monumental.

Yet the Wolves never flinched while facing a private school juggernaut.

“King’s was a very well-trained and developed team, with tall and athletic players,” Matochi said.

“Before we stepped in to the court, I asked the girls to play like they are David against Goliath. They all followed that motto whole-heartedly!”

Matochi praised the entire roster of young spikers for their grit and determination, while casting a spotlight on a terrific trio.

“Teagan (Calkins), Brynn (Parker), and Tenley (Stuurmans) did an incredible job with setting, and every single player that came in to the game — whether for a specific role or to play around — was able to show improvement and tenacity.”

From here on out, the Wolves remain on Whidbey, with three-straight home matches, then a short trip down Island to face Langley in the season finale.

First up is Granite Falls, which comes to Coupeville this Wednesday, Oct. 13. Tipoff is 3:15 PM.

“We are extremely proud of these group of girls, and we are so excited to play the next matches and see what our future holds,” Matochi said.

“The biggest goal that Katie and I have is for the girls to have fun and play hard,” he added. “We accomplished those things so well today, and I’m so proud of them for fighting like David!”

She’s droppin’ kills and takin’ names

Chelly is still crunchin’ the volleyball.

Coupeville grad Chelsea Prescott offered up another strong performance Saturday, racking up nine kills, seven digs, and a team-high three service aces during a tense four-set thriller.

Unfortunately, her heroics were not enough to save Medaille College, which fell 26-24, 25-21, 25-27, 25-15 to visiting La Roche University.

The loss drops the Mavericks to 1-2 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play, 4-10 overall.

Medaille gets back at it Tuesday, Oct. 12, when it hosts Alfred State College in another AMCC tilt.

Along with Prescott’s all-around performance, the Mavericks also got strong work from Halle Bogas (13 kills), Haley Kennedy (34 assists), and Cierra Tripp (19 digs).

Prescott has been rock-solid in her freshman year in Buffalo, starting all 14 of her team’s matches and playing in all 45 sets.

The former Wolf has 73 kills, 108 digs, 13 aces, eight assists, one solo block, and six block assists, while scoring 90 points.

She’s #2 on her team in digs, and #3 in kills, aces, and points.

Wolves serve up sizzlin’ stats

Alita Blouin has 83 more digs than anyone else on her team.

Nine matches down, six to go in the regular season.

The Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad is 60% through its schedule, and sits at 6-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 6-3 overall.

With no seniors on his roster, Wolf coach Cory Whitmore has a young group — four freshman and two sophomores make up half of his 12-woman roster.

Three of those young guns — freshmen Lyla Stuurmans and Savina Wells, and sophomore Olivia Schaffeld — are starters, with all putting up strong stats.

But, if you want the current team leaders, you turn to the juniors, with Lucy Tenore, Maddie Georges, and Alita Blouin topping their team.

Tenore is #1 in kills and block assists, Georges tops in service aces and regular assists, while the duo are tied in solo blocks.

Blouin, the dig master for the Wolves, has been scraping balls off the floor at a staggering rate.

With 123 digs, she is tripling the total of Coupeville’s #2 player in that stat, Ryanne Knoblich, who has 40.

Young spikers embrace growth

Growth, every day.

That’s the goal for Coupeville Middle School volleyball coaches Cris Matochi and Katie Kiel as they shepherd their young spikers through the season.

And while both Wolf squads fell at Sultan Wednesday, dropping their records to 0-2, growth was just what they saw.

“I think that this game the girls really came together as a team,” Kiel said. “While we didn’t come away with a win, we did come away with plenty of learning opportunities and areas to improve on.

“We still had some pre-game jitters but that quickly worked itself out.”

Coupeville wraps up a three-match road trip with a journey to Shoreline this coming Monday, Oct. 11 to play King’s, then gets three-straight at home.

“I think that the girls will continue to progress throughout the season, and I’m excited to see how we do against King’s,” Kiel said. “We have two days to get ready, and I have no doubt that this team will give King’s a run for their money.”

As the Wolves progress through the season, their coaches are preaching focusing on the positive aspects of their journey.

“Coach Cris and I have been encouraging not only “positive self talk” but “positive team talk” as well,” Kiel said.

“Volleyball starts in the mind, and if we’re mentally ready, then getting physically ready is a piece of cake.”
