This could be the start of something good.

Coupeville grad Joey Lippo collected three hits as the University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball squad snapped a nine-game losing streak on the diamond.

The Owls hammered the University of Maine at Farmington 12-4 in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday, nabbing their first victory since March 13.

Now sitting at 2-14 on the season, Lippo and Co., who also had several games rained out recently, have 12 contests left on the schedule.

The former Wolf, currently in his senior season at UMPI, has been doing his part, hitting .318 with 20 hits, 14 RBI, and 10 runs.

Lippo leads the Owls in at-bats (65), triples (1), and RBI, while he’s #2 in batting average and hits.

He’s also collected 41 putouts while patrolling the outfield for Presque Isle.

During his CHS days, Lippo played tennis, basketball, and baseball for the Wolves, while at UMPI he has golfed in addition to his work on the diamond.

Savina Wells is touching the sky in Florida.

The former Coupeville standout, now a junior at Fernandina Beach High School, is off to a stellar start to her latest track and field season.

Wells has swept to titles in all three meets where she’s participated in the high jump, with a season-best of four feet, 11.75 inches in her most-recent outing.

Her PR of 5-00 from her sophomore season would have her sitting just shy of the girls’ school record of 5-02 — jointly held by Yashmeen Knox and Ryanne Knoblich — if she still lived in Cow Town.

Wells also has a second place and a pair of third-place performances in the javelin this season, while also competing in the discus and long jump.

The younger sister of Coupeville grads Ulrik and Izzy, Savina excelled at every sport she played while growing up on Whidbey, before the family moved to the Sunshine State after her freshman year.

At Fernandina Beach, “The Chosen One” (a nickname I can use if she lives in another state) has played volleyball and basketball in addition to spending time around the track oval.

Kylee Johnson

Coupeville Elementary School 4th grader Kylee Johnson continues to soar in the gymnastics world.

Her most recent accomplishment came this past weekend at the state championships in Everett, where she competed at level 5 in trampoline and tumbling.

Johnson earned first place in both floor and trampoline, while also notching a second place showing in the double mini.

That propels her to nationals, which will be held in Texas in July.

Before that Johnson is off to Salt Lake City for regionals.

“She has been working hard on her skills,” said mom Shannon Johnson.

“We are very proud of her accomplishments and looking forward to what she will do in the future.”

Arrivederci to Ciao

A Coupeville foodie institution is no more.

Ciao, which has served up Italian treats for 13 years on North Main Street, closed for good Saturday.

It occupied the building which formerly housed The County Deli.

Ciao owner Mark Laska released the following statement on Facebook Monday:

Thirteen years ago, we said Ciao, opened our doors, and were named Best New Business.

We welcomed an incredible community to dine and shine. We have celebrated you as you have celebrated us!

From birthdays, weddings, retirements, graduations, wakes, car shows, re-enlistment ceremonies, “Irish” funerals, Tango Tuesdays, and Carnavale to movie nights, wine-pairing dinners, proms, date nights, class reunions, First Thursdays, and magical music, we’ve done it all — together!

We have created so much beauty together and will cherish those glorious moments of togetherness.

On April 13th (our thirteenth anniversary), we said Ciao again.

But this time, it is goodbye with a hearty helping of grazie!

The Coupeville High School supernova had the day off recently as Wolf softball crunched visiting La Conner, with several starters giving playing time to their back-ups.

Along with raising the roof in the dugout, Farris also picked up her photographic tool and added to her already-impressive collection of pics for the yearbook, as seen in the snaps above and below.
