It was a nice little tune-up.

With the start of the postseason just around the corner, the Coupeville High School cross country squad ambled off to Bellingham Thursday for the Lake Lap Invite.

The 2.6-mile course at Lake Padden attracted 295 runners overall, with 23 of them wearing the red and black.

Coupeville held up well against a large number of foes, claiming 5th in the team standings for the boys’ JV race, 6th in the varsity boys’, and 7th in the girls’ race, which combined varsity and JV.

Meridian, perhaps benefitting from a hometown advantage, swept all three team titles.

With the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships set for next Thursday, Oct. 24 in Mount Vernon, the Wolves will kick off their postseason journey.

After league comes Tri-Districts at Ft. Steilacoom Oct. 30 and (hopefully) the state meet Nov. 9 in Pasco.

As her harriers make the turn and head down the back stretch, CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting hailed them for their efforts.

“They’ve all worked so hard this past season,” she said. “I am so proud of them all.”

The weather was blazing, and so were the times.

The Coupeville High School cross country squad traveled to Granite Falls Saturday for the 4th annual Mountain Loop Invitational, with the Wolves holding their own against a large field of competitors.

The CHS boys earned fifth place in the varsity team standings and sixth in the JV, while the Wolf girls claimed eighth in the varsity race.

Ready to rumble in their Cow Town shorts.

It was Coupeville’s first appearance at the Granite Falls event, which features a 5,000-meter course.

“It was HOT, HOT, HOT!!” said Coupeville coach Elizabeth Bitting. “They all ran amazing. I definitely think we’ll be back!”

Next up for Coupeville is the Lake Lap Invite in Bellingham Thursday, Oct. 17.

After that the Wolves begin their postseason journey at the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships in Mount Vernon Oct. 24.

Speedy, on or off Whidbey Island.

Coupeville High School cross country runners invaded the heart of Seattle Saturday and put together a stellar showing.

Competing at the 17th annual King’s Roller Coaster Trail Run, the Wolves earned second place in both the boys’ and girls’ team standings.

Traversing “three hilly miles of trails and some track, with no concrete” according to the brochure, Coupeville put four runners in the top 10.

Senior Landon Roberts was the fastest Wolf on the day, claiming seventh place in his race.

Coming off their big city jaunt, the CHS harriers return home this coming week.

The Wolves will host their lone home meet of the season Wednesday, Oct. 2 at Fort Casey State Park.

The rain fell on the plain, but mainly, it fell on their heads.

Returning to Orcas Island Wednesday, the Coupeville High School cross country team endured a damp day while taking part in a four-school race.

The Wolves lined up with Friday Harbor, Mount Vernon Christian, and their hosts for an event which featured one race — boys and girls combined, taking off from the same start line.

The 5,000-meter course offered a variety of experiences, said CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting.

“A true cross country course,” she said. “So much diverse terrain, literally across railroad tracks.

“It rained right up until race time, then started raining again as the race started, but they were happy to be back on Orcas, as it was cancelled last year.”

It’s a two-fer week for the Wolf runners, who hit the road again this Saturday, travelling to Seattle, where they will compete in the King’s Roller Coaster Run.

Thomas Strelow goes for the burn.

The weather was nice, and the times even nicer.

Competing at the 45th annual Carl Westling Invitational in Langley Saturday, the Coupeville High School cross country squad showed up and showed out.

“It was a good day!” said CHS coach Elizabeth Bitting.

The Wolves sent 22 runners to the line, spread out across multiple 5,000-meter races, with seven of those who ran in the event last year setting a PR this time around.

Bitting was impressed with her entire roster, repping one of the smallest of the 31 schools in attendance, while offering a little extra praise to some of the harriers.

Mikayla (Wagner), Devon (Wyman), Isaiah (Allen), and Beckett (Green), just a few of our freshmen runners, ran very impressive races,” she said.

“I am looking forward to see what they do over the season.

Aleera (Kent), Kayla (Crane), and Ethan (Walling), all new to cross country, are also runners to keep your eyes on. It was a good day for Cow Town!!!”

Coming off the trip down island, Coupeville hits the road twice next week.

First up is a jaunt to Orcas Island for a Northwest 2B/1B League meet Wednesday, then an appearance Saturday in Seattle at a meet hosted by King’s.
