One Whidbey, winnin’ all your awards

Week 29 belongs to Whidbey Island.

Softball stars who play to the South and North of Coupeville were named Thursday to the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Athlete of the Week list.

South Whidbey senior Morgan Batchelor and Oak Harbor sophomore Haylee Burleigh were among those selected as athletes from 4A-1B were honored.

Batchelor was hailed for her work on the diamond against Concrete Mar. 29, where she hit for the cycle and tossed a no-hitter, whiffing seven Lions.

Burleigh drew notice for her work at shortstop over a three-game span, as she was flawless in the field.

A two-way star like Batchelor, the Wildcat also pounded out four hits, including a triple, and stole four bases.

Pop the net, earn the hype

What happens in Leavenworth doesn’t always stay in Leavenworth.

Coming off a stellar performance at the Cascade Holiday Classic, Coupeville High School junior basketball star Logan Downes has been recognized by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

Praised for his play in leading the Wolf boys’ hoops team to two wins and a tourney title, Ralph and Angie’s youngest son was named a WIAA Athlete of the Week.

It’s the second time this school year a Coupeville athlete has been recognized, with Downes following in the footsteps of Wolf football player Dominic Coffman.

Winners receive a letter of recognition, a certificate of achievement, and a $25 DICK’S Sporting Goods gift card.

In the game right before the trek to Snowsville, USA, Downes went off for a career-high 33 points in a road win at Forks.

He also snatched 10 boards against the Spartans, then brought the heat in Leavenworth.

Coupeville swept Kittitas and Manson to claim the title, with Downes scoring 30 and 24.

Not just a shooter, he racked up 13 rebounds across the two games, while also drawing several offensive charging fouls on rival players while scrambling on defense.

Downes has poured in 204 points across the first nine games of the season, averaging 22.7 a night for a new-look Wolf team which sits at 5-4 after a tough non-conference schedule.

The Wolves, who have won five of their last seven games, open Northwest 2B/1B League play Friday at home, welcoming Orcas Island to town.

Tip-off is 5 PM, with the varsity girls playing at 3:30.

WIAA honors Wolf football star

The Dominator … dominated.

Coupeville High School senior Dominic Coffman scored four touchdowns, recovered a fumble, and picked off a pass Friday as the 2B Wolves scorched 2A Bellingham 48-6.

For his efforts, the gridiron giant was honored by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, named as one of the group’s Athlete of the Week winners.

Each week during the school year, the WIAA tabs a male and female athlete from each of its classifications — 4A, 3A, 2A, 1A, 2B, and 1B.

Winners receive a letter of recognition from the WIAA Executive Director, a Certificate of Achievement, and a $25 DICK’S Sporting Goods gift card courtesy of Gesa Credit Union.

Coffman doubled his season output with his four-touchdown performance, scoring in multiple ways.

He smashed into the end zone twice on rushing attempts, blowing up Bellingham tacklers on 36 and three-yard runs.

Coffman also hauled in a 50-yard scoring strike from Wolf QB Logan Downes and returned a fumble he forced for another touchdown.

It was the first defensive score this season for the Wolves, who also added a safety in the rout.

With eight touchdowns through six games, Coffman is tied with fellow senior Tim Ursu for second-best on the team, trailing just Scott Hilborn, who has hit paydirt 10 times.

Coupeville is 5-1 heading into a road trip to Leavenworth to play 1A Cascade, the best start by a Wolf football team in years.

WIAA honors Catherine the Great

Lhamon, here with family, was named a WIAA Athlete of the Week.

They appreciate her. They really appreciate her.

Coupeville High School senior Catherine Lhamon, who won all four of her cross country races, including the Northwest 2B/1B League Championships, was named an Athlete of the Week Thursday by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

The WIAA honors one male and one female athlete from each classification (4A-1B).

Lhamon, who is the lone senior on the CHS cross country squad, has been at the forefront of the sport since the Wolves returned to the harrier life in 2018.

She advanced to the state meet as a junior, and was dominant during a pandemic-altered final campaign.

Three of Lhamon’s four victories this season were by more than a minute, with her win in the league championship meet by a full minute-and-a-half.

Hawk thrills WIAA voters

He burnt the nets down, and the outside world took note.

Coupeville High School sophomore Hawthorne Wolfe became the first Wolf basketball player in at least a decade-plus to notch back-to-back 30+ point games, and his performance landed him some big props.

After scoring 34 against Oak Harbor on the road Dec. 4 and singing Orcas Island for 33 in Coupeville’s home opener Dec. 7, Wolfe was tabbed as an Athlete of the Week by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

Each week during the school year, the WIAA honors male and female athletes from every level (4A-1B).

Wolfe kicked off his award-worthy week against 3A Oak Harbor, blitzing them for 15 points in the first quarter alone.

During that time, he went on a 12-0 run by himself, netting three straight three-balls, before driving hard to the hoop for a layup and free throw to get three the hard way.

Against Orcas, Wolfe exploded for 16 points in the third quarter, careening to the hoop, stoppin’ and poppin’, and driving the Viking defenders batty.
