Back to action.

After sitting out spring break, Coupeville High School sports teams are hankerin’ to return to play and will do so in the week ahead.

Wolf baseball and softball square off with Darrington in two-game series, traveling off-island Tuesday, before welcoming the Loggers to Cow Town two days later.

Meanwhile, CHS girls’ tennis host Granite Falls Wednesday, then makes the short jaunt to South Whidbey for a Friday fracas.

And last, but not least, track and field travels to Bellingham Saturday for the Birger Solberg Invitational.

Break’s over, and the next eight weeks will be filled to the brim with action, Mother Nature willing.

All eyes focus on the flight of the baseball. (Photos by JohnsPhotos.net)

It was photo-clickin’ weather.

Sunny skies welcomed baseball fans to the prairie Saturday, as Coupeville and South Whidbey clashed on the diamond.

Along for the ride, camera in hand, was John Fisken, who sends us the pics seen above and below.

Let it marinate.

With Spring Break upon us, Coupeville High School sports teams have no games on the schedule in the coming week.

The Wolves don’t return to action until April 8, so the win/loss records currently in place will stand for a bit.

Not that all Northwest 2B/1B League teams have the time off, as there are 13 games planned next week for rival softball, tennis, and baseball programs.

But the Wolves? They will abide.

So, as we head into the great unknown, here’s where things sit as of Mar. 30:

Northwest League baseball:

School League Overall
Friday Harbor 2-0 3-1

Landon Roberts, seen here with Aunt Stephanie Blas, tossed two shutout innings Saturday. (Kevin Blas photo)

Can’t score? Can’t win.

It’s a reality in the baseball world, and one that a very inexperienced Coupeville High School team has come to appreciate.

Coming off back-to-back trips to the state tourney, the Wolves find themselves with a thin roster full of largely new-to-the-game players, which is a big part of why the squad has failed to push a run across in five of six games.

The latest loss came Saturday, with Coupeville falling 13-0 to visiting South Whidbey in a non-conference rumble shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

Having been outscored 63-3 this season, the Wolves now have some time off, with Spring Break keeping them out of games until a trip to Darrington arrives April 8.

Saturday’s island rivalry clash was decided in the middle part of the game, with South Whidbey tossing five runs on the board in the top of the second, then another eight in the third.

Landon Roberts came on to toss two scoreless innings of relief, and he and starting pitcher Carson Grove combined for seven strikeouts on the afternoon.

The Wolves had runners aboard in every inning but couldn’t come up with a game-altering hit.

After two-out singles by Camden Glover and Jayden Little across the first two frames, CHS started the third strongly.

Phin Rhodes cracked a single, followed by Roberts lacing a base knock, but that was where the rally stopped as a strikeout and a double play denied the Wolves.

All total, Coupeville had seven baserunners (six hits, one walk), while the visitors racked up 14 hits and five walks while taking advantage of three Wolf errors.

Collier Honold paced the Falcons with three hits, while his teammates rapped out four doubles.

Grady Davis recorded a pair of two-baggers, with Levi Batchelor and Malachi Pierson also whacking extra base hits for Tom Fallon’s South Whidbey squad, which got to 2-3 with the victory.

Saturday stats:

Camden Glover — One single
Carson Grove — One single
Jayden Little — One single
Phin Rhodes — Two singles
Landon Roberts — One single
Trent Thule — One walk

Coop Cooper, seen last season, delivered a strong pitching performance Thursday, whiffing 10 on Friday Harbor. (Photo by JohnsPhotos.net)

The offensive struggles continue.

Blanked for the fourth time in five games, a largely inexperienced Coupeville High School baseball team fell 3-0 at Friday Harbor Thursday afternoon.

The Wolves, who are learning on the job, fall to 0-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 0-5 overall heading into a home non-conference game Saturday against South Whidbey, which sits at 1-3.

There were definite bright spots for Coupeville Thursday.

The three runs surrendered were the fewest by far this season, the Wolves committed a season-low one error, and starting pitcher Coop Cooper whiffed 10 batters in 4+ innings of work.

But the Wolves also went down 1-2-3 in six of seven innings, striking out 16 times against Friday Harbor sophomore hurler Jackson Feliz.

The only frame in which CHS put a runner on base was the top of the fourth, and it was a prime opportunity which didn’t come to total fruition.

With Feliz buzzing through a perfect game, the Wolves suddenly loaded the bases with no outs.

Landon Roberts ripped a liner to right field, Carson Grove got plunked by a wayward pitch, and Camden Glover dropped a bunt single down the third-base line.

For a team which has been outscored 50-3 this season, the chance to bust through was tantalizingly close.

Then the door slammed shut, with Feliz picking up another K, before inducing a double-play ground ball to end the rally.

Friday Harbor, which only had three hits on the day, had just enough offense of its own to salt away the win and claim a sweep of the two-game series between island rivals.

The Wolverines pushed a run across in the third, thanks to a walk, a single, and a wild pitch, before adding insurance tallies in the fifth and sixth.
