One day, two superstars.

Oct. 1 delivered us a pair of top Wolf athletes in Skyler Lawrence and Grey Rische.

Actually three, if you count former CHS track and field sensation Dalton Martin.

But, once you graduate and move on to the real world, you generally lose your birthday celebration privileges here on Coupeville Sports (I need some time to myself…), so today the focus is on the terrific twosome still repping the red and black.

And they are two of our best, strong on the athletic field and winners in the classroom and out associating with the general public.

Skyler and Grey are easy to root for, and their continued success in all their endeavors reflects quite nicely on their town and their school.

Lawrence has been a beast on the boards for the Wolf basketball program and was part of last year’s team, the first to qualify for state in a decade.

I remember the first time I saw her play, back in middle school, and how impressed I was with her hustle.

She would sweep the boards clean, then beat the guards down the floor, every time without fail.

Not a straggler whatsoever, Skyler goes full tilt and is quite willing to get down and dirty in the dog-pile when necessary.

She also seems to have a great sense of humor, as she and running mate Allison Wenzel are usually giggling about something when not on the floor.

You scan the bench and there the two of them are, poking each other and exchanging private jokes, regardless of the score.

Skyler is also a supremely accomplished thrower for the CHS track team, a two-time state meet qualifier in the shot put who’s gunning for the school record.

Grey joins her on the Wolf track team, where he’s a jack of all trades, seeing time as both a thrower and a runner.

Toss in a stint as a basketball player (maybe he’ll return to the hard-court for his senior season?) and Rische is a well-rounded athlete.

His biggest success, though, has probably come on the tennis court, where he shines as both a doubles ace and a singles sniper.

For much of his career, he teamed with brother Jared Helmstadter, forming the Thunder and Lightning combo, until Jared’s graduation split them apart.

This season, Rische has teamed up with fellow Class of 2017 netter Jimmy Myers to form one of Coupeville’s most dependable doubles duos, and the one which remained undefeated the furthest into the season.

With CHS coach Ken Stange juggling a young lineup this year, Grey has also slid into a singles slot at times, and he’s more than held his own.

Providing a nice dose of leadership and calmness on the court, Rische is a key part of why the Wolves are circling their second straight 1A Olympic League title.

As the birthday buddies play out their senior year, I hope they both continue to accomplish great things and stay true to the classiness both have shown on a daily basis.

Happy birthday to both of you. May your cake day be awesome, and your final year at CHS even better.

They are truly birthday buddies.

Coupeville High School juniors Jacob Martin and Gabe Wynn, both multi-sport stars for the Wolves, were born on the exact same day.

At the time, no one probably had the slightest clue they would one day unite at CHS to rep the red and black, but it’s worked out quite nicely for both of them, and for us, their fans.

The duo are superb athletes, with Gabe having suited up for tennis, football, basketball and baseball, while Jacob has been a rock on the football field and a fleet-footed runner on the track oval.

If you have to pick one sport for each, Martin’s biggest impact has been on the gridiron, where he hits with a cold fury (while smiling) and is a dangerous runner.

During a down season for Wolf football last year, he was one of the true shining stars, a guy who went flat-out every snap they let him on the field.

I fully expect him to be a leader as a senior next year, both in piling up stats and in keeping Coupeville moving back up in the standings.

With Gabe, it’s hoops.

The first time I ever covered him in person was during his 8th grade season on the hardwood, when he was a one-man wrecking crew.

In one game against Sultan, the Wolves were being smacked around pretty good, until Wynn, devilish grin creeping across his face, went absolutely bonkers and blew the Turks sky-high.

He’s continued that style of play through his high school days, where he has been, without a doubt, the player most likely to collect bruises from diving for balls, fighting through screens and, occasionally, flipping completely over the defender’s head while wrestling for rebounds.

Take both Jacob and Gabe off the gridiron or hardwood, though, and they really shine.

While they have made their name as athletes, both guys come across as quality young men in everything they do.

Well-spoken, smart, considerate of others, loyal to their friends and family, outgoing. The list of positive attributes could go on and on.

But, they have cake days to celebrate, so let’s just wrap things up simply by saying this — they’re as good as it gets, and Coupeville is blessed to have both of them.

Happy birthday, gentlemen.

Amanda Fabrizi

Amanda Fabrizi

She was electric.

Capping a stellar athletic career at Coupeville High School, Amanda Fabrizi took a quantum leap during her final season in the red and black.

Fabrizi, who celebrates her 18th birthday today, was always a good basketball player. But as a senior, something new surfaced.

Running along side fellow captain Breeanna Messner, Fabrizi brought the grit, toughness and quiet leadership you knew she would. Then she added some sizzle.

She relentlessly attacked the basket, forcing opponents to backpedal and often foul her, and had no fear, regardless of whether it was the opening minute of the game or the final ten seconds.

Of course, Fabrizi was also her team’s best three-point bomber, which meant you had to guard her everywhere on the court.

With her sudden emergence as a player who was willing to take the scoring load on her shoulders, that opened up the floor for sophomore teammate Makana Stone to run wild and blossom into one of the league’s best players.

With a playoff win at home and a chance to play in a post-season all-star game with Messner, Fabrizi got the sort of ending you always hope for when a player works as hard, overcomes as much, as Fabrizi did.

Poke her in the eye? Slam her to the floor? She never missed a game or a beat, coming right back at you.

Off the floor, she couldn’t have been more different. Friendly, outgoing, extremely loyal to her family and friends, a young woman of amazing grace in everything she did.

Her graduation will leave a huge hole for both the Wolf basketball and volleyball squads. Inevitably, someone else will step up and take the spotlight. Circle of life and all.

But Fabrizi won’t be forgotten.

She accomplished much, and she did it the right way. She is an example to show to future Wolf athletes as they come up.

Here walked Amanda Fabrizi. She was a legend, because she never, ever stopped working.

McKenzie Bailey

McKenzie Bailey

McKenzie Bailey may be the second sister, but she’s a star in her own right.

The Coupeville High School junior-to-be, who celebrates her birthday today, makes a dandy duo with big sis McKayla, the Photo Bomb Queen of Cow Town.

Together, and with lil’ sis Mollie, they’re keeping family tradition alive by kickin’ fanny in as many sports as possible.

And, in the brief moment when they’re not actually playing themselves, each of the Bailey girls can usually be found at one of their sister’s games, being loud and proud in support.

In her two years at CHS, McKenzie has been a true throw-back, one of the few Wolves to play year-round.

Bouncing from volleyball to basketball to tennis, where her star might be the brightest, Miss Bailey lives up to the reputation that comes with her last name.

She works hard. She plays hard. She’ll crack a girl in half and leave her on the hardwood (if necessary).

And, she’ll always, kinda, sorta, know where the camera is during every game. Cause no one has EVER accused a Bailey of being camera shy.

Which is why McKenzie and her family are the very definition of awesome.

They give me a lot to write about, and they provide me with billions of photo opportunities — which means less actual work for me. Win-win.

As long as there’s a Bailey doin’ their business in a Wolf uniform, we’re solid gold.

So thank you, McKenzie, for being a great athlete, an amazing sister and a pretty terrific person, all wrapped in one.
