Booters get bogged down in the mud

William Davidson and Co. have one game left on their schedule, a home bout Wednesday.

It rained all over the world Monday afternoon.

Or at least it seemed that way, as the Coupeville Middle School boys soccer squad escaped drenched Whidbey Island, only to end up in drenched Granite Falls.

With the liquid sunshine coming down in buckets, the Wolf booters found themselves sliding across the field, which made mounting an offensive attack nearly impossible in a 4-0 road loss.

With the defeat, the first-year CMS soccer program slips to 2-7 heading into its season finale at home Wednesday.

Coupeville hosts Northshore Christian Academy in a game set to kick off at 3:30 PM.

The weather forecast currently calls for 55 degrees, partly cloudy, mildly windy, and little to no precipitation.

So, exactly the opposite of Monday’s mess.

“Was a muddy game. Every time someone tried to plant their foot, they would end up on their butt,” said Coupeville coach Reese Cernick. “We took several shots from several players and couldn’t get one in.

“I told the guys to just have fun and play a muddy game.”

The Wolves had rung up wins in both of their previous meetings with the Tigers, but this time Granite was a different team, Cernick said.

“Very proud of the team, they tried hard, but Granite Falls played the best we’ve seen them all season.”

Improvement, game by game

“Aha, my old foe, you thought you could escape from me, but you were wrong, so wrong!”

Familiarity breeds improvement.

During its first season of competition, the Coupeville Middle School boys soccer team has just three rivals filling out its 10-game season.

The Wolves have beaten Granite Falls twice, while falling all three times they’ve played both Lakewood and Northshore Christian Academy.

The latest of those defeats came Wednesday in Lakewood, where CMS fell 4-0 on the pitch to their large-school rivals.

While the losses have piled up a bit during a 2-6 season, the chance to face off with the same squads has given the Wolves a chance to measure their progress.

In each of their three meetings, Coupeville has reduced the goals scored by Lakewood, a much-larger middle school which funnels students to a 2A high school.

The Wolves have brought the number down from eight in game one, to five in game two, then to four in the final meeting this season between the schools.

And it was actually much closer, as Lakewood only led 1-0 at the half and 2-0 late in the game.

A pair of back-to-back scores in the waning moments stretched out the margin, but didn’t dampen the positive showing from the Wolves.

“We played a great game against an undefeated team,” said Coupeville coach Reese Cernick.

“The Lakewood coach kept commenting the whole game how much we had improved and how on point our defense is.” he added. “This was one of the best games we’ve played this season, hands down.”

Coupeville has two games left on its schedule, traveling to Granite Falls Monday, Oct. 21 in pursuit of a season sweep.

After that, the Wolves wrap their inaugural season Oct. 23 at home against Northshore Christian.

Booters embrace growth

Closer and closer.

The Coupeville Middle School boys soccer squad has faced Northshore Christian Academy three times this season, and, each time out, the Wolves have narrowed the margin.

Monday afternoon CMS fell to their private school foes 3-0 in a game at Mickey Clark Field, the closest they’ve gotten so far during their inaugural season.

Now 2-5 on the year, the Wolves hit the road for their next two games, playing Wednesday at Lakewood, then Oct. 21 at Granite Falls.

The season finale is Oct. 23 at home, the fourth match-up with Northshore.

While his team has yet to topple NSCA, Coupeville coach Reese Cernick looks forward to the battles.

“We play each game a bit better against them,” he said. “Last week we lost by a lot more.

“We have one more game against Northshore, and I think if we can work on a few things, we have the ability to beat them.”

First home win for CMS booters

Logan Downes banged home both goals, giving him five on the season.

Another day, another milestone.

Roaring from behind Wednesday, the Coupeville Middle School boys soccer team rode two goals from Logan Downes and bounced visiting Granite Falls 2-1.

It was the first home victory in the history of the program, which improves to 2-4 in its first season of competition.

The Wolves proved resilient, not flinching after falling behind early.

Granite slipped a goal into the back of the net barely 10 minutes into the contest, using a short shot into the opposite corner to break the ice.

It would be the final happy moment the visitors had the rest of the afternoon, however, as Coupeville’s defense went into lock-down mode after that.

Downes pulled the Wolves even with his fourth goal of the season shortly afterwards, then scored the eventual game-winner in the second half.

Coupeville wasn’t content to sit on the lead, though, with CMS coach Reese Cernick unleashing his offensive attack.

The Wolves crashed the net hard, getting good looks for Nick Wasik, Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim, and Mikey Robinett, but had every shot narrowly miss hitting pay-dirt.

Still, the defense made the lead hold up, and Cernick capped things with a short, but sweet, sentiment.

“We played well,” he said.

CMS completes a three-game home-stand Oct. 14, when it welcomes Northshore Christian Academy to town.

After that are two road games, then the season finale at home Oct. 23.
