The Wolf Buddies are back, and stronger than ever.

Kicking off a new year of the program — which unites Coupeville High School volleyball players with elementary school children — the Wolves and their young charges kicked up their heels.

“The girls did an awesome job of being role models to these young ones while serving their community and the future of their volleyball program,” said CHS coach Breanne Smedley. “So fun to watch it in action!”

throwin' down

Still quite capable of throwin’ down, however.

The look of Wolf volleyball is an ever-changing one.

When the Coupeville High School spikers kick off the season at home Sept. 8 against Island rival South Whidbey, they’ll be playing in a gym that boasts new state-of-the-art bleachers.

And, they’ll be wearing new duds.

In the photos above, the Wolves debut their new look, which features black uniforms for home matches and white ones for road trips.

And, if you’re wondering, the players pictured in the first photo start with sophomore Hope Lodell (2) in the middle.

Build for the future, now.

The Coupeville Boys & Girls Club is offering summer volleyball camps for players entering grades 3-8, with instruction coming from CHS coach Breanne Smedley and current and former Wolf spikers.

The camps run June 18-20 and costs $30 for one session or $75 for all three (includes camp t-shirt), with registration ongoing at the boys & girls club (203 N. Main).

Sessions will run from 9 AM-noon each day of the camp for players in grades 6-8 and 1-4 PM for those in grades 3-5.

The fundamentals of passing, setting, blocking, attacking and serving will be covered, with work done on basic offensive and defensive systems.

Players will be challenged at their level of ability, with the camp including scrimmages, a tournament, daily awards and drawings.

Smedley, who is entering her second season at the helm of the Wolf program, brings 10+ years of playing and coaching experience to the floor.

She played volleyball at Western Washington University, then coached club volleyball before taking over at CHS.

She’s currently a Physical Education Specialist at Broad View Elementary in Oak Harbor.

Smedley’s goal is to have each camper come away with “an experience that improves his/her volleyball skills in a safe and positive environment.

“Players are encouraged to reach their fullest potential and come away from camp not only with new skills but an enthusiasm for the game,” she added. “We focus on a maximum number of quality ball contacts and give students a high level of attention through a low camper to coach ratio.

“Finally, we expect players to learn and have fun!”

Hope Lodell

Hope Lodell showed great promise as a freshman.

Football’s not the only game in town.

While most people tend to think of gridiron teams when talking about spring practices, Coupeville High School volleyball is hard at work as well.

The Wolves, led by head coach Breanne Smedley and new JV coach Heidi Wyman, have had 27 prospective players show up during the first week.

The practices kicked off with older players (those currently in grades 9-11) at work, with 8th graders allowed to practice the second week. That hasn’t stopped the young guns from soaking up the atmosphere, however.

“Spring practice has been very encouraging so far,” Smedley said. “We have a great group of returners who are eager to learn, improve, and put in hard work.

“Incoming freshman are already showing their commitment to the program by being at spring practice to learn and be around the team,” she added. “Spring practice is an essential part of getting everyone on the same page before the season starts and we are excited to keep working towards our goals for this team!”

Wyman is replacing Amy King, who cut back from three coaching positions to one.

“It has been beneficial to have our new JV coach working with the girls,” Smedley said. “Her volleyball background and knowledge has already added a lot to our program.”

imageTime to step up to the line, CHS volleyball fans.

The Wolves are currently seeking pledges and donations for a Serve-A-Thon fundraiser they will be holding May 21.

The event will raise money to send the team to the Western Washington University summer camp.

All the pertinent info is including in the second photo above, so I’m not going to make you read it twice.

To help, go find a spiker, someone like Tiffany Briscoe or McKenzie Bailey or Sydney Autio (I’m pulling names up randomly, not playing favorites…) or contact Coupeville coach Breanne Smedley at (360) 635-2381.

P.S. — I am flat broke right now, so this article is my contribution. Yeah, yeah, yeah, move along, ladies.
