Loss stings, booters remain in playoff chase

A bump in the road.

Playing on Friday Harbor Tuesday, the Coupeville High School co-ed soccer squad took a brief step backwards, held scoreless for only the second time in 11 games this season.

Blanked 3-0 by their hosts, the Wolves had their three-game winning streak cracked and fall to 3-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 5-5-1 overall.

Coupeville is in a tie with Lopez Island (3-1) for second place in the nine-team NWL boys’ soccer standings, trailing just Orcas Island (5-0) with four games left on the regular season schedule.

Next up is a big one, with the Wolves squaring off with Lopez at Mickey Clark Field Thursday in a game scheduled to kick off at 4:00 PM.

After that, CHS closes with a home clash against Providence Classical Christian (Oct. 29), a road trip to La Conner (Nov. 1) and a home rumble with Orcas (Nov. 2).

Tuesday was the second time the Wolves played Friday Harbor this season, but an 8-3 loss back on Sept. 17 was in a game considered a non-conference clash between league foes.

This one hurt more, as it affects playoff positioning and came in a must-win game for the always-tough Wolverines, who came into the day unexpectedly struggling at 0-3 in NWL play.

CHS coach Robert Wood praised senior goaltender Hurlee Bronec, saying the netminder “played like a professional and saved it from being 7-0.”

Booters return in winning fashion

It’s been a while since Coupeville High School played a competitive soccer game.

But the wait was worth it.

Back in a pitch battle for the first time in 10 days, the Wolves co-ed squad nipped host Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood 1-0 Friday afternoon in their league opener.

The win propels CHS to 1-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 3-4-1 overall.

Next up is a clash with Grace Academy, also on the road, set for Tuesday, Oct. 15.

The Wolves beat the Eagles 3-1 earlier this season in a game considered a non-league tilt.

Friday’s rumble in Lynnwood was a “scrappy game,” said Coupeville coach Robert Wood.

The Wolves nabbed the only score of the game thanks to Angel Partida, who was set up by Cael Wilson.

It was Partida’s fifth goal of the season, tying him for the team lead, and sixth of his prep career.

The goal chase begins anew.

Coupeville High School soccer returns to action this Friday, Oct. 11, with a road trip to Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood to kick off conference play.

The clash will be the first for the Wolves in 10 days and offers a chance for the team to add to its season scoring totals.

Wilson wows against fierce foe

Cael Wilson is making a run at family scoring supremacy.

The Coupeville High School senior, who is the only soccer player in school history to have scored a goal in five seasons, rattled home two more scores Tuesday in Bothell.

While Wilson’s outburst wasn’t enough to topple pitch powerhouse Providence Classical Christian, which claimed a 7-2 win in a non-conference soccer game between Northwest 2B/1B League rivals, it did propel the ginger sniper up the scoring chart.

His two-goal day gives him a team-best five tallies this season, and 11 for his prep career.

That ties Cael Wilson for #8 all-time on the CHS boys’ scoring chart with Zane Bundy, while leaving him just two goals shy of older brother Aidan Wilson, who punched in 13 goals during his run in the red and black.

Tuesday’s goals came off of assists from Preston Epp and Angel Partida.

Wilson’s first score was fired from the far corner, while on the second scoring run, he exchanged short passes with Partida, then slapped home a left foot shot to the corner of the net.

Providence, which finished third at the 2B/1B state tourney a year ago, has a potent scoring attack, but Coupeville coach Kimberly Kisch praised the play of her goalie, senior Hurlee Bronec.

“As always, Hurlee was a rock star, making big saves,” she said.

Now 2-4-1 on the season, Coupeville wrapped its non-conference schedule Tuesday and begins league play Oct. 11 with a road trip to Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood.

The Wolves have eight conference games ahead, including a rematch with Providence, as they chase a playoff spot while competing in the premier 2B/1B soccer league in the state.

Kisch, and fellow Wolf coach Robert Wood experimented a bit Tuesday, using the game as a learning exercise.

“With the final non-league game, we tried some new things with our lineup,” Kisch said. “It didn’t work out, but we gleaned valuable information about their defensive line.

“I am confident that when we see Providence again on our field, we will have a much different outcome.”
