Everything continues to move.

As we say farewell to the regular season and look towards the postseason run of league, districts, and state, there are five Coupeville High School track and field stars who land in the top 10 among all 2B athletes statewide.

That’s up from four a week ago, as freshman distance runner Cyrus Sparacio moves back among the leaders in the 3200.

Meanwhile, Wolf sophomore pole vaulter Lillian Ketterling, who broke her PR by three inches, moves up a slot, while freshman shot putter Tamsin Ward slips a spot.

With the Northwest 2B/1B League meet on the schedule for this Thursday, here’s where things sit statewide through May 4:

GIRLS:

Shot Put — Tamsin Ward (9th) 31-07

Pole Vault — Lillian Ketterling (7th-tie) 8-06

BOYS:

3200 — Cyrus Sparacio (9th) 10:16.99

High Jump — Wyatt Fitch-Marron (3rd) 6-02; Davin Houston (8th-tie) 5-10

Every jump, every race changes something.

Or so it seems as the top performances statewide among 2B track and field athletes continue to ebb and flow as the spring plays out.

In the past week members of the Coupeville High School squad competed at two different meets in two different towns, and as we take a pause to scan the leader board, four Wolves are among the best of the best currently.

They aren’t the same four as a week ago, however, with sophomore Lillian Ketterling having moved back into the top 10 in the pole vault while freshman Cyrus Sparacio has, for the moment, been bumped out in the 1600.

Where things sit through April 20:

GIRLS:

Shot Put — Tamsin Ward (9th) 30-10

Pole Vault — Lillian Ketterling (7th-tie) 8-00

BOYS:

High Jump — Wyatt Fitch-Marron (5th-tie) 5-10; Davin Houston (5th-tie) 5-10

No bus and ferry for them.

Competing at home for the first time this spring, the Coupeville High School track and field team picked up four wins and 37 PRs Wednesday during an 11-team rumble at Mickey Clark Field.

On a partially sunny prairie afternoon, the Wolves got victories from Tamsin Ward (shot put), Cyrus Sparacio (1600), Davin Houston (high jump), and George Spear (3200).

It was the fourth win this season for both Ward and Sparacio, as the fab frosh continue to lead the way for CHS.

Meanwhile, wily vets Spear and Houston each collected their first victories of the spring, with the latter setting a PR in his event.

Overall, the La Conner boys and Mount Vernon Christian girls claimed team titles, with Coupeville finishing third and fourth, respectively.

Wednesday’s meet was the first in two weeks for the Wolves, who last saw competition back on April 1 in Mount Vernon.

Now that it’s back in action, Coupeville will stay busy, heading to North Kitsap Saturday for the 23-team Dave Snyder’s Lil’ Norway Meet.

That’s a detour, as CHS was originally slated to compete in the Forks Lion Club Invitational but will instead vie with a deep field including schools such as Auburn, Bethel, Port Angeles, and Klahowya.

Rival coaches paid attention.

Tamsin Ward and Lillian Ketterling may be fairly young, but the duo earned big respect for their play during Coupeville’s return to action as a fully independent girls’ soccer program.

After a two-year shutdown, the Wolf booters rejoined the Northwest 2B/1B League this fall and now have landed two players on the All-Conference teams.

Ward, a freshman who punched in a team-high 15 goals for CHS, was tabbed as a First-Team selection, while Ketterling, a sophomore sensation who netted six scores, was named to the Second-Team roster.

Mount Vernon Christian senior Callie Russell was the MVP, with Lopez Island pitch guru Galen Westervelt earning Coach of the Year.

Providence Classical Christian brought home the Team Sportsmanship Award.

It’s never too early to think about playing at the next level.

Four Whidbey Island soccer players pulled themselves out of bed at 4:15 AM Sunday morning to make the trek to Bellevue and participate in a College Coaches Showcase Camp.

Sophomore sensation Lillian Ketterling and fab frosh Tamsin Ward attend Coupeville High School, while freshmen Olivia Stewart and Amelia McGrath do their schooling in Oak Harbor.

All four play together on the Deception FC soccer squad when not suiting up for their high school teams.

The Showcase Camp, hosted by Bellevue College, was for “high school players who want direct coaching and evaluation from college coaches on the field.”

The event featured coaches from 11 colleges, including Washington State University, Seattle University, and Oregon State University.

Those coaches ran the drills and scrimmages, offering players first-hand evaluations of their performances.

There was also a parent-inclusive recruiting seminar, focusing on NCAA rules and timelines to give players and their families a realistic view of the process.

“I think it’s invaluable to be able to start this early and know what to expect going forward, as a parent as well as the athlete,” said mom Jandellyn Ward.

“Hearing the coaches talk, being able to ask questions and also introducing themselves to them. Those were the best parts.”

The day also gave the Whidbey pitch queens a chance to step up their games, playing alongside other high-grade athletes.

“The girls got to scrimmage with obviously players they had never seen before,” Jandellyn Ward said. “So it was nice for them to be outside their comfort zone for a little while.”

While the high school season is done, club soccer continues for the fearsome foursome.

Up ahead on the schedule are tournaments in Tukwila in January and February, which will give the booters more chances to be seen by college recruiters.
