Every track and field athlete has one huge rival, and it’s the face they see in the mirror.

Wins and losses matter, but the hunt for PRs is at the core of the sport, as each competitor vies to take a couple seconds off their time or increase the distance they fling an implement.

During the just completed 2026 spring season, Coupeville High School coaches kept a running list of how the Wolves did, tracing their first performance of the season to their best.

As they did so, CHS athletes recorded improvements across a multitude of events, with the jumps ranging from minute to life changing.

Sophomore Richmond Bandong had the single biggest increase, improving a staggering 62% in the javelin, with his distance jumping from 77 feet, three inches to 125-02 by the end of the season.

The top Wolf girl was sophomore Lillian Ketterling, who bounced up 41.7% in the pole vault, from 6-00 to 8-06, eventually medaling at the state meet in the event.

Zachary Saho had the second-biggest increase of any Wolf in an event this spring.

History was made in the heat.

Competing Friday during day #2 of the three-day 2B state track and field championships in Yakima, Coupeville High School athletes claimed four medals, with the first one a milestone.

Sophomore Lillian Ketterling soared to an even eight feet in the pole vault, earning 8th place in her first trip to the big dance.

That makes her the 100th Wolf to bring home a state meet medal since the modern era of the event began back in 1963.

Hot on her heels was teammate Zachary Saho, who matched her later in the day with an 8th place showing in the shot put.

The Wolf senior chucked his orb 44 feet, five-and-a-half inches to shatter his PR by more than a foot, officially becoming CHS medalist #101 all-time.

Zachary Saho celebrates with CHS coaches Elizabeth Bitting and Bob Martin.

The day’s other mementos went to high jumpers Wyatt Fitch-Marron and Davin Houston, who placed 4th and 5th while soaring 5-10 and 5-08, respectively.

It was the second state meet medal for both, with Fitch-Marron having finished 7th in the same event last season as a freshman.

Houston, a junior, was part of a 4 x 100 relay team which claimed 6th place a year ago.

Wyatt Fitch-Marron adds to his medal collection.

Rounding out Friday’s action, Ketterling placed 16th in the discus, letting loose with a heave of 85-01, while the boys 4 x 1 relay squad finished 17th.

The quartet of Marquette Cunningham, Liam Blas, Fitch-Marron, and Houston hit the tape in 45.76 seconds, but failed to make the cut for Saturday’s finals.

Coupeville closes out its run at state when the team parade kicks things off on the final day at Zaepfel Stadium.

Freshman Tamsin Ward will vie in the high jump Saturday morning, while freshman Cyrus Sparacio and senior George Spear will run in the 3200 late in the day.

Everything continues to move.

As we say farewell to the regular season and look towards the postseason run of league, districts, and state, there are five Coupeville High School track and field stars who land in the top 10 among all 2B athletes statewide.

That’s up from four a week ago, as freshman distance runner Cyrus Sparacio moves back among the leaders in the 3200.

Meanwhile, Wolf sophomore pole vaulter Lillian Ketterling, who broke her PR by three inches, moves up a slot, while freshman shot putter Tamsin Ward slips a spot.

With the Northwest 2B/1B League meet on the schedule for this Thursday, here’s where things sit statewide through May 4:

GIRLS:

Shot Put — Tamsin Ward (9th) 31-07

Pole Vault — Lillian Ketterling (7th-tie) 8-06

BOYS:

3200 — Cyrus Sparacio (9th) 10:16.99

High Jump — Wyatt Fitch-Marron (3rd) 6-02; Davin Houston (8th-tie) 5-10

Every jump, every race changes something.

Or so it seems as the top performances statewide among 2B track and field athletes continue to ebb and flow as the spring plays out.

In the past week members of the Coupeville High School squad competed at two different meets in two different towns, and as we take a pause to scan the leader board, four Wolves are among the best of the best currently.

They aren’t the same four as a week ago, however, with sophomore Lillian Ketterling having moved back into the top 10 in the pole vault while freshman Cyrus Sparacio has, for the moment, been bumped out in the 1600.

Where things sit through April 20:

GIRLS:

Shot Put — Tamsin Ward (9th) 30-10

Pole Vault — Lillian Ketterling (7th-tie) 8-00

BOYS:

High Jump — Wyatt Fitch-Marron (5th-tie) 5-10; Davin Houston (5th-tie) 5-10

No bus and ferry for them.

Competing at home for the first time this spring, the Coupeville High School track and field team picked up four wins and 37 PRs Wednesday during an 11-team rumble at Mickey Clark Field.

On a partially sunny prairie afternoon, the Wolves got victories from Tamsin Ward (shot put), Cyrus Sparacio (1600), Davin Houston (high jump), and George Spear (3200).

It was the fourth win this season for both Ward and Sparacio, as the fab frosh continue to lead the way for CHS.

Meanwhile, wily vets Spear and Houston each collected their first victories of the spring, with the latter setting a PR in his event.

Overall, the La Conner boys and Mount Vernon Christian girls claimed team titles, with Coupeville finishing third and fourth, respectively.

Wednesday’s meet was the first in two weeks for the Wolves, who last saw competition back on April 1 in Mount Vernon.

Now that it’s back in action, Coupeville will stay busy, heading to North Kitsap Saturday for the 23-team Dave Snyder’s Lil’ Norway Meet.

That’s a detour, as CHS was originally slated to compete in the Forks Lion Club Invitational but will instead vie with a deep field including schools such as Auburn, Bethel, Port Angeles, and Klahowya.
