Booters score on awards night

They’re back, and they’re award-worthy.

Returning to action after a two-year absence, the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer program scored on and off the pitch this season, and put an exclamation point on things Friday night with a season-ending banquet.

Sophomore sensation Lillian Ketterling was tabbed as the team’s Most Valuable Player, while freshman Tamsin Ward was given the Golden Boot for leading the team with 15 goals.

Also garnering honors were senior Frankie Tenore (Leadership Award) and frosh Bettie Woolworth (Most Improved).

First-year CHS coach Jasmine Ader awarded varsity letters to 15 girls, 14 of whom can return next season to keep the rebirth rockin’.

“We had so much growth!”

“I’m speechless, this was a dream come to completion.”

Coupeville High School girls’ soccer coach Jasmine Ader was all smiles under the lights Thursday night, as she congratulated CHS boys’ pitch guru Jim Kunz.

Then the duo gave each other a high-five, and the party was rockin’ on the prairie.

Both Wolf coaches, in their first year of leading their respective programs, ended their campaign with a convincing win, putting an exclamation point on the opening chapter in what they hope will be long, successful best sellers.

While the Coupeville boys won at home Thursday, their female counterparts put a bow on things down the road in Bothell, bouncing host Providence Classical Christian 5-1.

The victory lifts the Wolf girls to 4-7-1 in their return to the pitch after a two-year absence, with Ader’s squad closing the season with a 3-1-1 run over its final five games.

A team with one senior (Frankie Tenore), no juniors, and one sophomore (Lillian Ketterling), just got stronger and more dangerous as the season developed, a testament to the freshmen and 8th graders growing into their new roles.

“We had so much growth,” said a jubilant Ader, who only had six girls on her roster in July — with the first game set for Sept. 8 — and finished with 15 booters, eight of whom scored.

“They accepted that challenge I made to them and put everything they had into it — the players, their families, our supporters, everyone.

“I have so much gratitude and am so happy I get to be out here every day doing my passion — coaching soccer.”

With the Coupeville girls’ soccer program relaunching after two seasons of being shut down due to a lack of players, the chance for the Wolves to earn a playoff berth was largely tabled by Northwest 2B/1B League officials.

Mount Vernon Christian, Lopez Island, and La Conner claimed District 1’s three postseason slots, but CHS will be back in the hunt for extra games next season.

Be ready to rumble.

“These girls have shown they are willing to put in the work, and be not just Wolves, but alpha Wolves,” Ader said with a smile.

“One goal? That’s nice. Two goals? That’s better. But three goals? Do I dare? I do. Oh yes, they shall fear the furious feet of Lillian Ketterling this fine day!!”

Coupeville closed with a fury, with Ketterling doubling her season scoring totals from three to six in one torrid afternoon.

Collecting her first high school hat trick, the laser-launching assassin was joined by frosh Tamsin Ward and 8th grader Sophia Greene, who also beat the PCC goalie with perfectly placed shots.

Ward’s goal was her 15th of the year, tying her with Kalia Littlejohn in 2017 for the second-best single season performance by a Wolf girl.

Meanwhile, Greene became the sixth different 8th grader to net a score this season, with middle school aces accounting for 12 of Coupeville’s 33 goals.

Young guns spark pitch win

They’re young, but ready to win now.

Sparked by goals from freshman Tamsin Ward and 8th grader Lyla Grose, the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer squad toppled visiting Providence Classical Christian 2-1 Monday night in a prairie thriller.

The victory lifts the Wolves, whose program was shut down the past two seasons, to 2-6 heading into the final third of the regular season.

CHS travels to Lopez Island Thursday, before hosting Sultan Saturday at 6:00 PM. That will be Senior Night for Coupeville’s lone 12th grader, Frankie Tenore.

Facing off with Providence, the Wolves relied on their two biggest offensive weapons this season.

Grose banked in her third goal of the campaign, while Ward found the back of the net for the eighth time.

The fab frosh, who played on a CHS co-ed squad last season as an 8th grader, is moving up the career scoring chart at a frantic rate.

With those eight goals, Ward already sits in a tie with Wolf grads Sophie Martin and Sage Renninger as the #7 scorer in Coupeville girls’ soccer history.

With the majority of their prep pitch careers still ahead of them, Ward and Grose are chasing Mia Littlejohn (35), Kalia Littlejohn (33), Genna Wright (20), Lindsey Roberts (17), Ayden Wyman (13), and Avalon Renninger (12) on the all-time list.

They’re young, feisty, and full of potential

“There’s so much to learn.”

As she leads the revival of the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer program, first-year Wolf coach Jasmine Ader continues to impart pitch wisdom to her young players.

The Wolves, who sit at 1-4 on the season after a rough 9-0 loss Friday to powerhouse Mount Vernon Christian, will spend the first part of this week working hard in practice.

The payoff? A Thursday home tilt with Friday Harbor (1-3-1), which gets its own crack at MVC two days earlier.

Coupeville, which is back on the field after a two-year shutdown due to a lack of players, has a roster jam-packed with 8th graders and freshmen, and the growth is evident.

The clash against Mount Vernon featured several Wolves playing new positions, such as fab frosh Emma Cushman moving into goal.

“Cushman had amazing tracking saves that she credits towards her softball abilities,” Ader said.

Other young stars caught their coaches eye, as well.

“Sophia Greene had another solid game on Friday,” Ader said. “She is getting strong and she’s really finding her flow in the game with the other defenders.

“I really like what Hailey Goldman and Paige Hill have to do in the game. I know when they take the field they will do what it takes to support their team.”

While they’re still fairly young themselves, sophomore Lillian Ketterling and freshman Tamsin Ward, who has already netted seven goals, provide key leadership for a still-maturing squad.

“We continue to have chances especially when Lillian and Tamsin are on the ball,” Ader said.

“We have our longest stretch of days without a game coming up. I look forward to seeing the team train this week and prepare for our game on Thursday at home.”

Booters are back!

Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2022 was a busy day in the world.

Rishi Sunak became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, a position he would hold for two years.

Dietrich Mateschitz, one of the co-founders of the Red Bull empire, passed away at age 78. No word on whether he drank his own beverage, or whether it gave him wings.

There was also a partial eclipse, disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein was in court, and, oh yes, the Coupeville High School girls’ soccer team beat visiting La Conner 4-0 in the season finale.

Sophomore Ayden Wyman punched in two goals for the Wolves, giving her 13 for her career at that point, and it was the last game for retiring coach Kyle Nelson, who ambled away after one last postgame interview with me.

After debuting in 2004, the CHS booters left the field that day in 2022 already thinking ahead to the program’s landmark 20th season.

Who knew it would take more than 1,000 days to get there, however?

The CHS girls played through a pandemic, but a crash in roster size sidelined the program the past two seasons.

Kimberly Kisch, a former Wolf player hired to lead her alma mater’s squad, ended up working with boys coach Robert Wood in 2023 and 2024, with a scrappy band of female pitch warriors joining up with Coupeville’s boys to form a co-ed team.

That squad was very competitive in an expanded-for-soccer nine-team Northwest 2B/1B League which has collected the majority of the state tourney trophies handed out in recent years.

Wyman, while denied a chance to chase the CHS girls scoring record, held her own against the boys, and was joined by other scrappers such as Lillian Ketterling, Taylor Marrs, and Frankie Tenore.

But this Monday, Sept. 8, that 20th season finally gets its moment.

Kisch, who decided to move back to coaching youth soccer, kept the flame alive, and new CHS pitch guru Jasmine Ader has capitalized, pulling together enough girls to have a full roster.

That means the Wolves will defend their turf at Mickey Clark Field against visiting East Jefferson this Monday (kickoff is 4:00 PM), a mere 1,050 days after the 2022 squad celebrated KO’ing La Conner.

If you can’t be there for the opener (I myself am 2,800 miles away in West Virginia these days…), Coupeville’s girls are slated to play seven of their first eight at home.

There’s no charge to watch soccer, so cram the stands in support of the Wolf girls being back in (red) and black.
