They lit off some fireworks.

Closing with three straight wins this weekend, the Island Vipers 14U softball squad captured a title at the Fun in the Sun tournament in Kent.

The sluggers, who boast players from all three Whidbey high schools, swept both games they played Sunday in bracket play to clinch the crown.

A 7-1 win over a squad from Sammamish sent the Vipers to the championship game, where they nipped the Washington Rage from Moses Lake 8-7.

The hot finish came on the heels of a third-place finish in pool play, as Whidbey held its own with top-ranked rivals.

After opening losses to squads from Woodinville and Seattle, the Vipers drilled a team from Puyallup 8-0 to start its turnaround.

Sunday’s title tilt started off with a bit of a clang, as Whidbey fell behind 4-0.

But the Vipers never faltered, rallying time and again.

“The players did a great job of embracing never being out of the fight and kept chipping away and playing aggressive softball,” said assistant coach Aaron Lucero.

“Chaos on the base paths mixed with timely hitting and effective small ball.”

With two outs and the potential winning run at third, Jolene Coleman came up huge, lacing a hard-hit shot past the shortstop to plate her teammate and capture the crown.

The Vipers awarded three game balls, one to Coleman for her timely base knock and one each to the pitching and catching duo of Adeline Maynes and Ava Lucero, who survived the heat and thrived.

“All my players know my rock and marshmallow speech and they were all rocks,” Aaron Lucero said.

“To come from behind from a pretty good hole in the championship game to winning on a walk off speaks volume of this team and the character that they have.

“I’m extremely proud of them. It was truly an entire team effort.”

Ready to tear up the diamond.

Another weekend, another tournament.

The Island Vipers 14U softball squad, which brings together players from all three Whidbey high schools, has been busy this summer.

Last weekend, the diamond dandies competed at the NSA state tourney in the Tri-Cities, while this weekend the sluggers are off to Kent for Fun in the Sun.

The Vipers open pool play Saturday.

At the state tourney, which drew 30 teams, Whidbey went 1-2.

“Good play throughout the weekend with a lot of positives,” said assistant coach Aaron Lucero. “The team did a great job of manufacturing runs when we needed and being aggressive — we call it create chaos on the basepaths.

“We continued to focus on the little things, such as situational awareness, two strike hitting, and getting the ball in play to advance runners.

“They’re developing and continuing to learn, which will benefit all the high schools on the island as we have players attending all three.

“We played some talented teams that pushed us hard which only makes us better.”

Capri Anter winds up and gets ready to fling heat. (Claire Kalwies-Anderson photo)

Capri Anter is on a tear.

The Coupeville freshman is currently wrapping up a successful debut year at the high school level, scoring as both an athlete and a student.

In the classroom Anter pulls down close to a 4.0, while bouncing from volleyball to basketball to softball.

Playing alongside Cousin Haylee Armstrong, she forms a deadly duo for a diamond squad which sits at 13-4 on the season.

Anter, who pitches and patrols the outfield for the Wolves, is coming off of one of her best performances.

She ripped three hits, including a double, and played sterling defense while tracking down fly balls as Coupeville thumped vaunted Nooksack Valley 11-2 Friday afternoon.

The non-conference victory, coming against a softball program which won the 1A state title in 2022, was huge for a CHS squad which starts three 8th graders and two freshmen.

When she’s not busy on the softball diamond or hitting the books, Anter can be found at Skagit Speedway, where her dad takes care of drivers who get hurt in the heat of action.

It makes for a busy life, but one which does not go unnoticed.

“She has been on the go since school started,” said proud aunt Michelle Armstrong. “She works hard on and off the field. She is very loved, and we are so proud of her and her cousin.”

That’s a feeling which carries over to her teammates, who often herald her at-bats with chants of “Taquito, Burrito, Caprito.”

And to classmates like Myra McDonald, who, on her way back to the school from track practice, stopped to holler, “Where’s my Capri Sun?????

“There she is, shining away!!”

“Love it when a plan comes together.”

Coupeville High School softball coach Kevin McGranahan exited the field Thursday with a smile on his face, and a skip to his step.

His Wolves, ranked #9 in 2B by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, cruised past visiting La Conner 14-2 in five innings, and they did it exactly the way the diamond guru drew it up.

“The plan was to rest most of the starters and play the bench players a lot and have Capri (Anter) eat up five innings in the circle,” McGranahan said.

“Check, check, and check.”

The win lifts Coupeville to 4-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 7-1 overall, while allowing key players to stay fresh for Saturday’s major showdown with highly regarded non-conference foe Forks.

The Wolves kept sophomore catcher Teagan Calkins in place to give the team a calm hand at the wheel, while mixing and matching their other players.

Normal starters Mia Farris, Jada Heaton, and Haylee Armstrong sat this one out, while Madison McMillan, Taylor Brotemarkle, and Sydney Van Dyke saw limited action.

Which didn’t slow the Wolves down, as every young woman in pinstripes was on point Thursday, combining to rack up six hits and 19 walks in a game which could have been much, much more lopsided.

Five of Coupeville’s nine outs across the second, third, and fourth inning came from having players intentionally leave base early.

That ensured the game would make it to five innings and the second mercy rule (10+ runs), and not be ended after three innings if CHS was up by 15 at that point.

La Conner actually held the lead for a hot second, scraping out a run in the top of the first thanks to a pair of hits.

After that, Anter, who finished with eight strikeouts, was virtually untouchable in the pitcher’s circle.

Calkins, who was frequently (and loudly) hailed as “The Red Dragon” by her bench, provided a burst of defensive excellence as well.

Spring up from behind the plate, she snared a popped-up bunt for one out, while twice gunning down runners who strayed too far off the bag.

Coupeville got all the offense it would need in the bottom of the first, and it began with Anter.

The fab frosh whacked a one-out triple to left, then scampered home on a passed ball to knot the score at 1-1.

From there, the Wolves used six walks, a couple of La Conner wild pitches, and an error to push the lead out to 5-1 at the end of the frame.

The most painful of those walks provided an RBI, as Mary Western got plunked with a wayward pitch and wore it well, to the delight of her teammates.

CHS stretched the advantage out to 12-1 through two innings, scoring seven more thanks to six walks and a pair of two-run singles from Danica Strong and Ava Lucero.

Strong’s base knock was especially impressive, as she stood tall to track down a pitch headed for the backstop and instead rammed it back up the middle between two defenders.

The Wolves added two more runs in the third, but no more, and did everything humanly possible not to score in the fourth — despite a double and three walks.

The two-bagger came off the bat of Calkins, with the righty flipping around and hitting from the left side in an effort to showcase her ability to be sublimely awesome in every aspect of the game.

Thursday stats:

Capri Anter — One triple, two walks
Taylor Brotemarkle — One walk
Teagan Calkins — One single, one double
Shania Kenney — One walk
Ava Lucero — One single, two walks
Adeline Maynes — Three walks
Madison McMillan — One single
Chelsi Stevens — Three walks
Danica Strong — One single, one walk
Bailey Thule — Three walks
Mary Western — Two walks
Melanie Wolfe — One walk

Push for the big 3-0-0-0.

As Coupeville High School basketball teams head into a new week — with three of four teams slated to play their final game Tuesday at La Conner — the Wolves have amassed 2,960 points among them.

Leading the way are the varsity boys, who are the one squad headed to the postseason.

Senior Logan Downes, even hobbled by a recent leg injury, has racked up 435 points and counting.

That gives him two of the top five individual seasons in program history, as he tallied 554 points as a junior.

Also in that top five? School record holder Jeff Stone (644), Jeff Rhubottom (459), and Pete Petrov (442).

Which means only 25 points separates Downes from having two of the top three individual campaigns for a CHS boy over the last 107 seasons.
