When Jerry Helm revs his engine, his fan club comes running.

The fire captain is burning up the track.

Even when his equipment fails to fully cooperate with him.

Overcoming a snapped front spindle, Central Whidbey Fire and Rescue head honcho Jerry Helm scrambled to pull his racing car back into shape Saturday, then unleashed holy heck on the track.

Is it just me or does this broken piece look like it’s complaining to the world?

“Opening night turned out to be challenging for us,” Helm said. “Got hit hard during qualifying.

“Huge shout out to Dirk Kruiswyk for running out to his shop for a spare to get me back out for the heat race and main event.”

Racing the clock, Helm and his crack pit crew proved you can slow down a Cow Town legend, but you can’t stop him.

“Huge shout out to Michael Matros, Philip Brotemarkle, and Max Waldron for the amazing pit work getting it swapped out just in time for the heat race,” Helm said.

Not that his night went 100% smoothly from there, as he promptly got hit during the main event as well.

This time, Helm had his rear tire blown clean off its rim.

Never fear, however, as the pit crew was there to save the day.

“After being towed off the track, my superstar pit crew were ready for me when the tow truck got me back to my pit stall,” Helm said.

“They had tools and my spare tire waiting for me,” he added. “They had the tire and rim swapped out before the tow truck even set me down.

“And to the screams and cheers from my racing family, I was able to get back out and finish the race.”

Daughters Finley (middle) and Scotlyn Helm, superstar racers in their own right, came out to support pops.

While it was a tough day for the #27 car and its team, just finishing was the real win.

“Given what we were dealing with, I’m amazed we were still able to finish the race,” Helm said. “Definitely a team effort.”

Backed by the smell of burnt rubber, he gave shout outs to Mike Shimek, Austin Lee Camp, and Tyler Hill for their assistance, and Scott Isenhart and Tiger Construction for their support.

You can catch Saturday’s racing action by tuning in to KSTW – Channel 11 next Sunday, April 7 at 5:00 PM, when #wqmastreetstockdads will be featured.

While Helm didn’t make the podium (this time), his cousin, Mike Shimek, did.

“We’ll be back!”

Central Whidbey Island Fire and Rescue led a successful fight Wednesday to prevent a fire at an equipment barn from spreading across the prairie during the height of the dry summer season.

While the structure on Terry Road, and the equipment inside are believed to be a total loss, there were no injuries or loss of life.

The property, farmed for many years by Robert Engle and his family, is currently owned by the National Park Services.

The NPS has a lease with a local farmer, Steve Hilborn, who is also the head baseball coach at Coupeville High School.

Central Whidbey Island Fire and Rescue was dispatched to the scene shortly after noon Wednesday and was on scene in four minutes.

Coupeville firefighters were later joined by crew from North Whidbey Fire and Rescue, South Whidbey Fire and EMS, the Oak Harbor Fire Department, Navy Region Northwest Fire Department, and Whidbey Health EMS.

Extinguishment and overhaul operations wrapped up shortly after 8:00 PM.

Site security and fire watch will extend until federal investigators arrive on scene Thursday morning.

The National Park Service will lead the investigation, with assistance from local authorities.

Paul Rempa

A candidate for the Coupeville School Board falsely claims on his personal Facebook page to be a firefighter for Central Whidbey Fire and Rescue.

Paul Rempa, who is running against Nancy Conard for Position 2, lists the claim under “details about Paul.”

This false claim has remained on his Facebook page since at least 2019, when he was publicly questioned about it.

A screenshot from early this afternoon shows Rempa still claiming first responder status he doesn’t deserve.

Command at Central Whidbey Fire and Rescue, when asked in 2019, stated Rempa had not been a volunteer for many years by that point.

Rempa, a first-time school board candidate in Coupeville, is currently a Precinct Committee Officer and Precinct Captain for the Island County Republicans.

In the past, Rempa was a volunteer with South Whidbey Fire/EMS, and served in the Coast Guard, though neither of those valid first responder jobs are noted on his Facebook page.

Instead, the job and status which is not his to claim remains the position which has sat prominently, for years, on his social media.

Rempa did not respond to an interview request.

Eggs, eggs as far as the eye can see.

Kids of all ages (and their parental units, as well) are invited to skip over to the Central Whidbey fire station on N. Main Saturday, April 4 for an Easter egg hunt.

The event, set for noon, conveniently happens right after the town of Coupeville has its own egg hunt at the town park.

So, short walk/drive and you get two egg hunts in a short amount of time.

Plus, you get to help the firefighters christen their newest fire engine.

Easter eggs AND fire engines?!!?!?!

Somewhere there’s a little boy whose head just exploded at the news.

Simmer down, sonny boy, you have a few days to get ready.

They came in huge numbers, and more than a few had an outright Coupeville connection.

The 13th annual Whidbey Island Marathon was run Sunday under bright, open skies with no rain or wind. And while no one from Central Whidbey qualified for the Boston Marathon out of the race, Coupeville did have a presence.

And, since this is Coupeville Sports, we’re listing those who listed the Cow Town as their home town.

If you put down Oak Harbor, or God forbid, one of those South Whidbey towns, you’re out of luck.

Go look for your name over at http://www.whidbeyislandmarathon.com/

And, if I missed a name, I was transcribing these at 1:30 in the morning, so don’t cry too much…
