Emily Licence -- a slick-fieldin', cheer-screamin', delicious-cookie-bakin' sensation.

Emily Licence — a slick-fieldin’, cheer-screamin’, delicious-cookie-bakin’ sensation.

Emily Licence has had a pretty good freshman year.

A two-sport Coupeville High School star (cheer and softball), she solidified herself as one my favorites the day she helped kick-start Cookie Wars 2014 by bringing me home-made cookies after a softball game.

We could talk about her slick fielding at third base for the state tournament-bound Wolves.

Her coach, David King, compared her glove work after one game to that of former Major League Baseball great Omar Vizquel, and it’s true. She has a knack for coming up with the big play.

Or, we could discuss Emily’s bright, sunny personality, which shines through both as a Wolf cheerleader and when she crams the stands in support of her fellow CHS athletes.

But let’s admit the truth — they were really good cookies. And I am easily swayed by sugar.

So, today, as Emily celebrates her birthday, two days before she plays on the biggest stage of her still-young sports career, I wish her a really happy day and the best of luck.

You came in like a pro, Miss Licence, you carry yourself with grace and class and you know when to gently bribe the press. That’s impressive.

Never change, cause you’re already awesome.

So, this one time, I almost hit Coupeville High School’s cheer captain with my car…

In my defense, we’re next door neighbors and I chronically forget to look behind me when I back up and I … yep, I’m an idiot.

But anyway, I tapped my brakes in time, Emilee Crichton got to enjoy her suddenly more-hazardous-than-necessary passage up our joint driveway without having to pick pieces of moss (my auto exterior is kinda, sorta going back to nature) off her car, and all was well.

Of course, she got her subtle revenge when she nominated me for the Winter Cold Water Challenge, forcing me back into the icy waters of Penn Cove a month earlier than I had planned.

Nicely played, Crichton, nicely played.

As she celebrates her 18th birthday today and wraps up her senior year at CHS, she remains what she has always been — a genuinely sweet, likeable, friendly, smart, successful young woman.

Whether she’s hangin’ out next door or taking off to conquer the outside world, I wish her the best. Because she is the best.

I even promise to look behind me at least 37% of the time I back up from now on.

It’s a start, at least…

Sylvia Hurlburt -- keeping alive the family tradition of being awesome.

Sylvia Hurlburt — keeping alive a proud family tradition of being awesome.

It’s never been about competing with each other.

Larry and Sylvia Hurlburt are siblings who always seem to be there for each other, the first person to congratulate the other one when they triumph in life — which is often.

Before he graduated from Coupeville High School, Larry advanced to the state meet in track. Last year, in her freshman year, his little sister stepped up and did the same.

Running as part of a very talented pack of younger runners that includes fellow sophomore Makana Stone and junior Marisa Etzell, Sylvia, who celebrates her birthday today, helped break school records and bring home a medal from last year’s state meet.

This year it’s already been more of the same for the sprinter and relay whiz.

She’s a year-round athlete, as well, helping to lead two Wolf cheer squads and carry on the name of her former cheer mentor, Sylvia Arnold, the “big” to her “little.”

Plus, she seems to be a genuinely smart, friendly young woman full of grace. So she’s got that going for her, which is nice.

Remember the name, because you’ll hear it a lot in the coming months and years. And that’s a good thing.

They never stopped cheering.

The 14 young women who made up the Coupeville High School winter cheer squad brought the noise and the funk every game during basketball season.

Now, they’ve moved on, some to spring sports, some to school work and some to just taking a break after back-to-back cheer seasons.

But, before they went, they all earned letters from Wolf coach Cheridan Eck for their time on the sidelines.

The honorees:

Fiona Bernhardt
Destiny Bitting
Robin Cedillo
Emilee Crichton
Bree Daigneault
Shelby Hall
Naika Hallam

Want to pack the stands?

Bring in the little cheerleaders for a halftime performance and there won’t be an empty seat to be found.

That bit of wisdom applies to any season, and it was proven once again Friday as Coupeville High School celebrated Senior Night for its girls’ basketball and winter cheer squads.

With a ton of extremely-excited little girls mingling with the Wolf cheerleaders whose uniforms they may one day inherit, CHS cheer coach Cheridan Eck pulled off a successful performance that meshed skill with enthusiasm.

And enough camera flashes coming from one side of the gym to blind anyone sitting behind the CHS bench. Just saying…

Somewhere down there, in the haze of flashing cameras and waving cell phones was photographer John Fisken, who snapped these pics for you. Yes, just for you.
