Emilee Crichton: Best of the best

Emilee Crichton: Best of the best

Emilee Crichton is used to tumbling, but not like this.

The Coupeville High School senior, a captain on the Wolf cheer squad, suffered a badly bruised kidney and chest wall Wednesday after a hard fall.

The fall did NOT take place during cheer, but I am prohibited from telling you where or how she fell or the slightly embarrassed Ms. Crichton, who is my next door neighbor, has implied she might send me on a similar fall.

The injury will sideline her from leading her cheer squad for several weeks at least, and possibly the remainder of the basketball season, said mom Vicki Crichton-Wells.

“She hit very hard,” said Crichton-Wells. “We took her to the ER after school and thank goodness no broken ribs.

“Doc said she is grounded for at least two weeks,” she added. “We are just glad she is OK.”

Even when she was potentially knocked loopy, Crichton knew that wasn’t enough to avoid going toe-to-toe with Coupeville’s #1 education enforcer.

“Dang kid still wanted to go to school,” said her mom. “Didn’t want to miss English, she said, because Mrs. Ballard was giving them a new essay…”

Madeline Roberts already knows where she’ll be playing softball next year,

The Coupeville High School senior, who still has a season left in the red and black, will sign a letter of intent soon to play for Shoreline Community College.

A slap-hitting leadoff hitter with speed and superb bat control, Roberts can play multiple positions in the infield and outfield and has been a key player for the Wolves.

Also a cheerleader for CHS, she has devoted herself to softball, traveling with Wolf teammate Hailey Hammer to play with a select team during the off-season.

Shoreline, whose mascot is the Dolphin, is coached by E. Bryan Johnson and plays in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges.

Roberts parents are Jay (Jennifer) Roberts and Lisa (Stephen) Roberts-Edlin.

They are here, and they will dance.

Jumping into a new season, 15 Coupeville High School girls have made the transition from the fall cheer squad to the winter team.

Led by coach Cheridan Eck, the now much-warmer Wolves (having moved from the frosty football field into the CHS gymnasium for basketball games) have also busted out a lot more dance moves.

While they’re on a temporary vacation right now, with winter break kicking off yesterday with the brief smattering of snow to hit town, the Wolf cheerleaders will return Friday, Jan. 3, when hoops play comes back.

La Conner comes to town that day for a b-ball doubleheader, with the boys tipping off at 5 PM and the girls scheduled for 6:45.

First they came for our vuvuzela horns. Then the Fun Police came for the Wobble. (Melissa Zimmerman-Losey photos)

Wobble on, Wolf Nation, wobble on…

Until the break of dawn.

To everything there is a season, and that season has passed for The Wobble.

After closing every home football game with a cheerleader-led hustle to the catchy, Cab Calloway-influenced rap song “Wobble” by Atlanta’s own V.I.C., a routine that would invariably pull in most of the remaining people in the stands, the dance is no more.

Despite the fact the song is a catchy tune, and the dance is one anyone from a little kid to a crusty 80-year-old could do, a complaint (over some semi-suggestive lyrics) led CHS cheer coach Sylvia Arnold to replace the routine in last Friday’s final home game.

The Wobble will not go inside for basketball season, disappointing much of Wolf Nation.

Which is too bad, since Arnold and assistant coach Cheridan Boyd-Eck had tailored the dance to keep it family-friendly, foregoing the original music video’s butts-in-your-face approach.

“We chose to keep focused on the fun of the “worldwide” dance that was all over YouTube,” Arnold said.

“People have flash mobbed that routine all over the place, and our girls and the crowd loved it!!”

But, ONE family complained, and, to avoid controversy, the Wobble went the way of the Hammer dance and the cha-cha, replaced by an energetic Zumba routine, “Dance! Dance! Dance!” crafted by Boyd-Eck.

“Everyone seemed to like it, even with the pouring rain,” Boyd-Eck said.

And that persistent rain may have helped, as the crowd hit the exits faster than normal.

Though, as he went, one sardonic scoreboard operator did stop, look around and bellow “I wanna wobble!!”

His plea went unanswered, so he bopped in place by himself for a few moments, shrugged, then headed off into the downpour.

Wobble on, sir, wobble on.
