Every woman on deck.

Bouncing back from its first loss of the season with a vengeance, the Coupeville High School varsity volleyball squad thrashed visiting Port Townsend Thursday in a match in which all 11 players saw major floor time.

Two days after falling on the road to King’s, the defending 1A state champs, the Wolves returned home and sailed to a 25-13, 25-14, 25-14 non-league win, kicking their season record to a sweet 6-1.

They get a few days off now before traveling to Sultan Tuesday, Oct. 9 to face a Turks squad which is mired in last-place in the North Sound Conference at 0-4.

That match will mark the halfway point in league play for Coupeville (3-1), which has sole possession of second-place in the six-team conference.

Thursday’s match offered the Wolves a chance to rekindle a rivalry with one of their former mates in the Olympic League, though CHS was not in a charitable mood.

In control from the first serve of the night until the final play, a dazzling hook shot winner thrown down by a suddenly sky-high Scout Smith, Coupeville had plenty of opportunity to experiment, tweak things, and, most importantly, get back that winning feeling.

Even better, they did it while getting swing players Lucy Sandahl, Zoe Trujillo, Maddie Vondrak and Raven Vick their most extensive varsity playing time of the season, and all four came through with big plays.

“I’m excited to see how we adapted with different lineups,” said CHS coach Cory Whitmore. “Everyone on the team has been working really hard in practice, and it was good to get everyone in, and give them an opportunity to show what they can do in live play.”

Coupeville came out firing on all cylinders, with big hitters Emma Smith and Maya Toomey-Stout torching the RedHawks early with ferocious spikes.

With their foes a bit on their heels, the Wolves took advantage, riding a hot streak at the service line from Ashley Menges, who reeled off seven straight points, to blow the lead out to 15-3.

Whitmore mixed things up almost immediately, having three of his swing players serve in the opening set, with a Vick bomb setting up a weak return which Chelsea Prescott promptly whacked into the far corner for a winner.

The second set was more of the same, with Emma Smith dropping a blistering spike for a winner, in between two plays on which she used her height and leaping ability to soar above the net and flick tips in between defenders.

Scout Smith and Menges ran off six points apiece on serve, while Hannah Davidson came bounding out of nowhere on one play to snare the ball with her fingertips and spin it between a pair of RedHawks who both swung and whiffed.

The final frame offered Trujillo and Emma Mathusek a chance to shine at the service line.

Trujillo ripped off four straight serves on which the RedHawks managed to touch (not return) just one, then Mathusek, the hardest-working libero in the biz, got a bit of sweet reward for all her digs and floor burns.

Given the ball and free reign at the line for the first time this season, Mathusek fired off a truly nasty ace which ripped a hole in the court, then her second serve set up Trujillo for a tip winner which froze the defense.

While few of the Wolves spent their usual amount of time on the floor, Toomey-Stout nailed a match-high 12 kills and collected five digs.

Scout Smith, showing off her rapidly-expanding repertoire of sets (including a fair amount of set-ups created while bounding skyward), collected 16 assists to go with five service aces.

Menges (seven aces), Mathusek (six digs), Prescott (four digs), Emma Smith (three kills) and Trujillo (three aces) all chipped in to crafting an extremely-balanced stat sheet.

Coupeville spikers prepare to take the floor Saturday at the Oak Harbor jamboree. (Charlotte Young photo)

“It was a good first outing, finally playing against someone other than ourselves in scrimmages.”

With the regular-season opener coming up fast, Coupeville High School volleyball coach Cory Whitmore was thrilled to unleash his spikers Saturday at the Oak Harbor jamboree.

Facing a pair of big schools, the small 1A Wolves held their own, sweeping three sets from 4A Cascade and dropping three close sets to their 3A hosts.

“It was a great starting point to learn from, especially in our losses to Oak Harbor,” Whitmore said. “We were much more confident stepping on the court versus Cascade and played loose and ahead of their offense, working within our own identity, while with OH we struggled to play to our strengths and remain on the attack.

“As the morning and afternoon progressed, I was happy to see us make small improvements in various areas that will help us to shape our identity and stay strong to a game-plan,” he added.

“This group expects a lot of themselves and are cohesive, quick-learners – I’m excited to get back to practice for a couple days and then take on Friday Harbor at home.”

Coupeville, which went to the state tourney last season, jumps in to the new North Sound Conference while dealing with the loss of a talented group of seniors.

The Wolves return four varsity players — Emma Smith, Ashley Menges, Scout Smith and Maya Toomey-Stout — while also getting back Hannah Davidson after a brief detour to Cali.

As he meshes newcomers with veterans, Whitmore came away impressed with what the first-time varsity regulars are bringing to the floor.

Emma Mathusek played very well as our libero,” he said. “She played a combination of relaxed and active and I was very impressed with her as she settled comfortably into her role and will be a fun player to watch.

Zoe Trujillo was very adaptable today, playing both outside and right side hitter at various points during the day,” Whitmore added. “Chelsea Prescott did a fantastic job in her first venture playing back row at the varsity level.

“She remained poised, learning as the day went on and got more and more aggressive attacking the dig forward. I particularly enjoyed learning that her range of serving varies not only deep but placed short-court as well.”

Wolves (back, l to r) Veronica Crownover, Nicole Laxton and (front) Mackenzie Davis, wait out a rain storm Friday at the district softball tourney in Lacey. (Kelly Crownover photo)

The rain might have been an omen.

Fresh off of beating Vashon Island in the district playoff opener Friday, the Coupeville High School softball team found itself beset by liquid sunshine.

And, while the umbrellas were finally put away and the Wolves were allowed to take the turf in Lacey, all the hits had been washed out of their bats.

After raining down base-knocks against the Pirates, Coupeville was one-hit by Bellevue Christian and fell 14-1 in the District 3 title game.

The Wolves can still punch their ticket to state, though, and all it will take is to beat a familiar foe.

Olympic League rival Klahowya, which Coupeville has beaten six straight times over the past two years, survived a loser’s out brawl with Vashon.

After winning 12-1, the Eagles will clash with the Wolves 1 PM Saturday and the stakes are simple.

Win, and you go to state (Coupeville’s last visit was in 2014, Klahowya’s in 2004).

Lose, and you hang up your uniform and prepare for your team banquet.

The two teams have similar records, with the Wolves sitting at 12-8 and the Eagles at 11-7, but their rivalry has been largely one-sided this season.

Coupeville swept to a league title by beating KSS 15-1, 9-4 and 12-7.

The Wolves have outscored the Eagles 60-22 over the past two seasons, winning all six of their clashes.

To keep that streak alive, and punch a ticket to Richland, CHS needs to hit more like it did in game one Friday, and less like it did on a wet, slick turf field in game two.

Coupeville’s only base-knock against BC came in the bottom of the second, when freshman third-baseman Chelsea Prescott launched a lead-off triple down the right-field line.

The ball curved over first base, hung in the air for a second, then bit ground just inside the chalk and skipped to the fence while Prescott sailed into third standing up.

She promptly came home on the next pitch, when the ball got away from the Bellevue catcher, but, as quickly as the Wolves launched their mini-rally, it was over.

BC scored in four of five innings, chipping away for two in the first, one in the second and another two in the third.

Coupeville’s best defensive stand came in the fourth, when Katrina McGranahan cut down the lead-off hitter on a come-backer, then ended the inning with back-to-back K’s.

The fifth inning, by contrast, was a killer, as the Vikings exploded for nine runs to turn a fairly close 5-1 game into a blow-out.

Other than Prescott’s hit, CHS only got three runners (McGranahan, Hope Lodell and Lauren Rose) aboard, all thanks to walks.

Matt Hilborn gets creative in a bid to make SportsCenter.

Mollie Bailey: “I could throw this ball straight over the center field fence. I won’t cause I’m all responsible and stuff, but I could if I wanted to. I’m not just strong, I’m farm strong, baby!!”

Hunter Smith is cookin’ in the kitchen, and someone just ordered the high, hard cheese.

Fireball-chucking Wolf hurler Katrina McGranahan enjoys the look on batter’s faces when they strike out.

“I told you before, you want to go to McDonald’s after the game, you win. Milkshakes are for closers!”

Flying towards the foul line, Kyle Rockwell tracks the ball for a key out in the final inning.

Chelsea Prescott proves The Terminator wasn’t just a movie.

Wins, and glossy action pix, as far as the eye can see.

The Coupeville softball and baseball squads have combined to go 22-8 this spring and are an inch or two away from both adding league title plaques to the school’s Wall of Honor.

It’s a done deal for the softball sluggers, while the diamond men are 98.76% there.

Both teams captured big home wins Friday, with softball crushing Island rival South Whidbey 10-0 and baseball nipping Chimacum 2-0 for a win which all but anointed them league champs.

As the games played out, local camera bug John Fisken worked both sides of the street, and the pics seen above are courtesy him.

The bats are hummin’.

As it preps for Friday’s rivalry game with South Whidbey (4 PM in Cow Town), the Coupeville High School softball squad continues to pile up the offensive numbers.

The Wolves, who sit at 9-4 and shellacked the Falcons 12-0 the first time they played this season, are a well-oiled machine.

The big boppers — Katrina McGranahan, Sarah Wright and Veronica Crownover — are delivering in style, but CHS is also getting major contributions from young guns like Scout Smith, Chelsea Prescott and Emma Mathusek.

The latter, who hits out of the #9 hole, has torn the cover off the ball in the last week-and-a-half, running her batting average up to a sizzlin’ .360.

As Mathusek and Co. prep for the Falcons, a look at the latest sweet statsy stats, as compiled by CHS coaches and posted on MaxPreps:
