Every night a different hero.

Four games into the 2020-2021 hoops season, that’s the statement being delivered by the Coupeville High School varsity boys basketball squad.

Saturday was no different, with four Wolves scoring in double digits as CHS drilled host Orcas Island 73-42 in the first road trip of the season.

The victory, Coupeville’s second in less than 24 hours, lifts it to 2-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 4-0 overall.

The Wolves are tied atop the NWL standings with Mount Vernon Christian (2-0, 3-1), a team it faces next week.

It’ll be part of a busy week leading into the holiday break.

Coupeville travels to Concrete (0-2, 0-3) Dec. 14 and MVC Dec. 17, then hosts non-conference archrival South Whidbey Dec. 18.

After that, the high-flying Wolves are off until Jan. 4.

And Brad Sherman’s wrecking crew is absolutely high-flying, having broken 70 points each time out this season, with a narrow win over 3A Oak Harbor, followed by three straight blowouts.

Coupeville’s 4-0 start is the best the program has seen since the 1996-1997 Wolves — starring current assistant coach Arik Garthwaite — began 12-0.

Saturday’s scorching of Orcas was very similar to Friday’s demolition of Darrington, as CHS exploded out of the gate, building a huge lead early.

A day after scoring 30 in the first quarter, the Wolves dropped 27 on the Vikings, with Alex Murdy knocking down nine points to lead the way.

Up 27-9 heading into the second frame, Coupeville stretched the margin to 43-18 at the half, and 60-24 through three periods.

The Wolves scored from all angles, but were particularly effective from long range, with six of 10 players nailing at least one three-ball.

Cole White and Xavier Murdy each splashed home a pair of treys, with Hawthorne Wolfe, Caleb Meyer, Grady Rickner, and Alex Murdy also makin’ the nets pop.

Meyer, the last heir to Videoville’s legacy, was top man Saturday, kissing the glass for 15 points, while Alex Murdy (14), Wolfe (13), and Xavier Murdy (10) were also super-effective.

Coupeville also got scoring from Rickner (9), White (6), Logan Martin (2), Dominic Coffman (2), and Logan Downes (2), while Jonathan Valenzuela brought the defensive heat during his time on the floor.

They’re 4-0, and hungry for more.

Top of the league.

That’s where the Coupeville High School varsity girls basketball team finds itself after pounding host Orcas Island 36-19 Saturday afternoon.

The team’s second Northwest 2B/1B League victory in less than 24 hours, it lifts the Wolves to 2-0 in conference play, 3-1 overall.

It also puts Coupeville in a tie with defending NWL champs La Conner (2-0, 5-0).

And last, but not least, it leaves first-year varsity head coach Megan Smith smiling from ear to ear.

“We played really well today,” she said. “Our defense was phenomenal!

“They worked so hard on it in practice this week, and it really showed today,” Smith added. “They are really coming together as a team, and that has been so fun to watch!”

Fresh off a home win against Darrington Friday, Coupeville came out on fire during its first road trip of the season.

Senior Audrianna Shaw, who went off for 20 points — best performance by a Wolf player, girl or boy, varsity or JV, this season — had the range early, and never relented.

Banging home the first of four three balls on the day, she poured in seven points in the game’s first eight minutes, sparking CHS to a 14-5 lead at the opening break.

From there, the Wolves steadily pulled away, pushing the margin to 23-7 at the half, and 34-15 by the end of the third quarter.

Shaw, who outscored Orcas by herself, played like her coach did back when she wore a CHS uniform — bringing the offensive heat on every play.

Audri couldn’t miss today!,” Smith said. “She had a great game all around.”

Audrianna Shaw outscored Orcas 20-19 Saturday.

Shaw had plenty of help, as six of her nine teammates also lit up the scoreboard.

Abby Mulholland and Izzy Wells knocked down four points apiece to lead the support crew, while Savina Wells notched three.

Maddie Georges (2), Gwen Gustafson (2), and Carolyn Lhamon (1) rounded out the scoring, with Lyla Stuurmans, Ja’Kenya Hoskins, and Katie Marti also seeing floor time.

Coupeville has a busy week ahead, with three road games in a five-day stretch.

The Wolves have league tilts at Concrete (0-2, 1-2) Dec. 14 and Mount Vernon Christian (1-1, 3-1) Dec. 17, as well as a non-conference rumble at South Whidbey Dec. 18.

Then they’re off until Jan. 4, when La Conner travels to Whidbey.

They shuffled the roster, and lit up the scoreboard.

Coupeville High School swing players Gwen Gustafson and Lyla Stuurmans made their first JV appearance Saturday, combining with Madison McMillan to form a formidable scoring machine.

Paced by the trio’s combined 26 points, the Wolves led from start to finish, polishing off host Orcas Island 41-23.

The win puts Coupeville’s young guns at 1-0 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 1-2 overall.

Saturday’s clash looked more like a nailbiter than a blowout after one quarter, with the Wolves clinging to just a 4-2 lead at the first break.

That changed, and quickly, as McMillan poured in eight points in the second frame, sparking CHS on a 17-9 run.

Also coming up big was Katie Marti, who banked in a three-ball en route to tallying five points during the game-busting streak.

Up 21-11 at the half, the Wolves stretched the lead out to 35-15 by the end of the third quarter, then coasted in for the victory.

McMillan paced Coupeville with 10 points, while Gustafson and Stuurmans recorded eight apiece.

Also getting in the book were Marti (5), Brooklyn Thayer (4), Desi Ramirez-Vasquez (2), Bryley Gilbert (2), and Kayla Arnold (2).

It was the first game for Thayer, and the fab frosh made an immediate impact on the boards as well.

Jada Heaton, Skylar Parker, Edie Bittner, Mia Farris, and Yodnum Nakakul all saw floor time for the Wolves, who have a bit of a break in their schedule.

Coupeville’s next foe, Concrete, doesn’t have a JV team, similar to what happened with Darrington Friday night.

That means the young Wolves are off the floor until next Friday, Dec. 17, when CHS travels to Mount Vernon Christian.

The JV also plays Dec. 18 — on the road at South Whidbey — then all Coupeville teams don’t play games again until Jan. 4.

The ending did not go according to script.

Playing without its top scorer, who went down early with a rolled ankle, the Coupeville High School JV boys basketball squad was still on target for a big win Saturday afternoon.

Then the floor fell out from beneath the Wolves, as host Orcas Island used a 19-4 run in the fourth quarter to claim a come-from-behind 37-31 win.

The loss drops Coupeville to 0-1 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 0-3 overall.

Things took a sour turn for the Wolves early, when sharpshooting guard Ryan Blouin went down with the aforementioned injury.

But that didn’t seem to ruffle CHS too badly, with Hunter Bronec and Mikey Robinett coming up big as the visitors built a 20-8 lead at the half.

Coupeville had an 8-4 advantage after one period, then slapped home another 12 points in the second frame, with four different Wolves making the nets bounce.

While Orcas trimmed the lead, slightly, to 27-18 through three quarters, things still seemed on the right track for CHS.

Until the Viking three-balls started dropping from all angles.

Raining down three treys in the final frame, Orcas got 16 of its final 19 points from the duo of Eddie Cunningham and Andrew Garcia.

On the day, those two Vikings, who banked in 11 and 13 points, respectively, teamed with Forest Frausto (10) to account for 34 of their team’s 37 points.

Hunter Bronec paced Coupeville with a team-best eight points, while Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim added his first six of the season.

Robinett (4), Nick Guay (4), William Davidson (3), Landon Roberts (2), Zane Oldenstadt (2) and Blouin (2) also scored, while Jack Porter, Hurlee Bronec, and Johnny Porter all saw floor time.

Coupeville’s next opponent, Concrete, doesn’t have a JV team, so the young Wolves are off until a trip to Mount Vernon Christian Friday, Dec. 17.

Quinten Simpson-Pilgrim has played strongly on both ends of the floor for the Wolves.

She’s back at full force.

Coupeville’s Makana Stone, who worked her way back from an injury, returned to the starting lineup Saturday and poured in a team-high 18 points in a tense Women’s British Basketball League clash.

While the Leicester Riders fell 60-53 to the Manchester Met Mystics, the offensive outburst was the best the former Wolf has achieved in her first season as a pro player.

Stone also snatched five rebounds and made off with a steal as her squad fell to 6-3 in league play, 9-4 overall.

With the loss, Leicester drops into a fourth-place tie with Manchester in the 13-team WBBL.

The game was a close one, but Manchester used a run in the second quarter to salt the victory away.

Up 14-11 after one period, the Met Mystics claimed a 21-13 advantage in the second frame to carry a 35-24 lead in to halftime.

Leicester trimmed the margin down to 46-39 after three, but couldn’t make it all the way back.

Brooklyn Mcalear tossed in 16 points to back up Stone, while Manchester countered with the one-two combo of Lauren Thomas-Johnson and Erika Williams, who went for 21 and 20, respectively.

Stone has racked up 82 points, 62 rebounds, 13 assists, and eight steals as a pro.

The Riders return to action next Sunday, Dec. 19, when they face off with the Sevenoaks Suns, who sit atop the WBBL with a 9-0 record.
