Matthew Kelley lets fly. (John Fisken photos)

Boom!

Matthew Kelley plunged the dagger in big-time Saturday, as he and his Coupeville SWISH 7th grade boys’ basketball squad pulled off a rally in the final seconds to stun arch-rival South Whidbey.

Kelley scored the game’s final five points, including a buzzer-beating three-ball, to lift the Wolves to a 24-21 win.

The victory improved Coupeville to 2-0 heading into a showdown next weekend with a very strong Mount Vernon Mayhem squad.

After leading for much of the game Saturday, the Wolves fell behind at the worst possible moment.

Down 21-19 with 36 seconds to play, they needed big plays and got them.

Michael Laska, the mighty mite, ripped down a rebound to give the ball back to Coupeville.

After Kelley dropped a quick runner in the key to knot things at 21, the Wolves pressed on the ensuing in-bounds play and disrupted South Whidbey on back-to-back chances.

On the first one, Sage Downes knocked the ball out of bounds.

On the second one, the Falcons threw the ball away, the basketball zinging over the head of a player who turned and clasped his head in frustration.

With the ball in their hands and five ticks on the clock, Coupeville gave the ball to Kelley and he charged straight up-court.

South Whidbey went back on its heels and Kelley went straight up and drilled the wide-open trey, looking a whole lot like Wolf legend Ian Smith when he did the same thing in a high school varsity game at Langley five years ago.

Both shots were game-winners and both shots induced tears in Falcon Nation — a beautiful combo for Wolf fans everywhere.

Kelley paced Coupeville with 13 while Jake Mitten dropped in six.

Hawthorne Wolfe and Daniel Olson added a bucket apiece while Connor Barton rounded out the scoring with a free-throw.

“The boys all played strong,” said Coupeville coach Pat Kelley. “We were just really off until the very end, when it mattered most.”

Matthew Kelley (John Fisken photo)

Matthew Kelley had 16 points and 15 rebounds Saturday, sparking Coupeville’s SWISH squad to a big win. (John Fisken photo)

Always be closing.

I doubt a single player on the Coupeville SWISH boys’ basketball squad has ever heard of Glengarry Glen Ross, much less seen it, but they all played Saturday in a way that would have made Alec Baldwin proud.

Putting together their best basketball in the fourth quarter, the Wolves rode a 12-1 surge to turn a one-point deficit into a comfortable 38-28 win over Anacortes in a game played in Mount Vernon.

The opening day win gave Coupeville, which has a mixture of 7th and 6th grade players (and one 4th grader) a strong start to its eight-game season.

The Wolves came out on fire, jumping all over the Seahawks to the tune of a 12-0 start, then regressed for a bit.

Anacortes rallied back to knot things up at 18 heading into the half, before leading 27-26 after three.

Once the fourth quarter started, though, it was Coupeville time.

Connor Barton hit Danny Barajas with a give-and-go pass, then got the ball back and swooped in for what would turn out to be the game-busting layup.

Clinging to a one-point lead, the Wolves amped up their defensive pressure and created a string of turnovers, converting almost all of them into quick buckets.

Down the stretch, Jake Mitten rolled to six of his 14 points, while Matthew Kelley and Sage Downes each chipped in with a fourth-quarter bucket.

Kelley paced the Wolves with 16 points as he and Mitten combined for 30 of their team’s 38 points.

Downes (4), Daniel Olson (2) and Barton (2) rounded out the scorers.

Mitten added 16 rebounds, four assists and two blocks, while Kelley snatched 15 boards, dealt out three assists and pilfered five steals.

Downes and Olson each had two steals, Hawthorne Wolfe chipped in with an assist and a steal and Alex Jimenez and Logan Martin collected a rebound apiece.

Mason Grove (John Fisken photo)

Mason Grove was electric Thursday, netting a career-high 25 at Sequim. (John Fisken photo)

There’s a new superstar in the Grove household.

Big sis Lauren, a state medalist and school record holder in track and a pretty darn good basketball/volleyball/soccer player, has to step to the side.

For a night at least.

Thursday was all about her brother, Mason, who capped his 8th grade basketball career by going off for 25 at Sequim.

Mason killed it!,” said proud Coupeville Middle School coach Bob Martin.

Playing with only six guys, the Wolves were nipped in the final moments by host Sequim, a much-larger school that funnels players to a 2A high school.

But even with a 49-45 loss to wrap its 10-game season, CMS went out strong.

“They had a great game, all six of them,” Martin said. “They endured and played hard; what more can you ask for.

Sean (Toomey-Stout)’s mom said it well, “they showed real grit tonight!,” he added. “There was plenty to smile about.”

Leading the highlights was Grove, who stepped off the bus on fire and never let up.

The long-range gunner scored in every quarter, with a bucket in the first, seven points in both the second and fourth and nine in a wild third-quarter burst.

Grove hit on three treys, dropping in three-balls in the second, third and fourth quarter.

Toomey-Stout banked home seven in support, while Koa Davison and Jered Brown hit for five apiece.

Jacobi Pacquette-Pilgrim netted a trey to round out the scoring.

A strong group of players who won their share of games, and battled valiantly against huge schools like Stevens and Sequim, the Wolf 8th graders now move on the next level.

As they go, they exit with the hard-earned respect of their coach.

“They came together and played their last middle school game like a team,” Martin said. “We’re proud of their efforts and commitment this season and look forward to watching them next year as freshman.”

7th graders bounced:

In the day’s other varsity game, the CMS 7th graders fell 49-24.

Season scoring leader Jake Mitten went for a team-high 10, while Matthew Kelley (7), Daniel Olson (3), Dakota Eck (2) and Sage Downes (2) also scored.

JV squads split:

Coupeville, playing with just five players in both games, fell 36-20 in the 7th grade JV game, but came back to stomp Sequim 42-16 in the 8th grade battle.

Tucker Hall led the 7th grade squad with 10, while Jonathan Partida knocked down eight and Gage Powers netted his first bucket of the season.

In the 8th grade game, Ulrik Wells was the man, matching Sequim by himself with a game-high 16. He also hit double digits in rebounds.

Omar Moralez and Aram Leyva chipped in with 10 apiece, James Wood popped for three and Gavin Knoblich had two.
