Rough night, better days ahead

A bump in the road.

Friday night’s loss at Mount Vernon Christian stings, but it’s not fatal for the Coupeville High School varsity boys’ basketball team.

Facing a Hurricane team which seemed unable to miss all night, the Wolves fell 73-53, snapping a four-game winning streak.

For the moment, the loss drops Coupeville to 2-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 9-6 overall.

But the silver lining is MVC is a 1B school, and the Wolves rep a 2B program.

So, while the Hurricanes earned a split in the team’s two-game series, this is the last time the squads will play this season.

Coupeville, which won the first time the schools squared off, still controls its own playoff destiny, as only its games against fellow 2B rivals La Conner and Friday Harbor decide who makes it to the postseason.

With one matchup against the Braves, and two against the Wolverines still ahead on the schedule, the Wolves head to Concrete Tuesday to face a 3-11 Lions team.

For CHS coach Brad Sherman and his team, basketball offers the reprieve of not having to wait long for the next game.

A day off Sunday, a day of practice Monday, and then back to the hardwood.

Coupeville didn’t play all that badly against MVC, matching them with five three-balls and getting big performances from its role players.

Problem is, the Hurricanes just had one of those nights when everything they threw up in the air seemed to catch the rim just right.

Once the Wolves were trailing, they would slice a bit here, a bit there, only to see MVC deliver yet another dagger in front of its home fans.

With Cole White popping for a quick five points in the early going, Coupeville led 11-9 heading towards the first break.

Then the Hurricane(s) hit and hit hard.

Using a 6-0 run to claim a 15-11 lead at the first break, MVC stretched its advantage out to 36-24 by halftime.

The Hurricanes clamped down on Coupeville’s leading scorers, Logan Downes and Alex Murdy, but the Wolves got help from the bench.

Nick Guay tossed in three buckets during the second quarter, while Zane Oldenstadt, normally a defense-first big man, connected on back-to-back jumpers to give CHS a fighting chance.

Coupeville got the lead down to seven at 45-38 late in the third quarter on a White pullup jumper, but the ‘Canes responded immediately.

Same thing in the final frame, as the Wolves cut a 12-point deficit to eight, only to have MVC go on an 8-0 run.

Another late Hurricane surge, this one 9-0, made the final score seem like more of a blowout than the game really was.

White paced the Wolves with a varsity career-high 15-point performance, while Guay tossed in 13, and Downes added 12.

Alex Murdy (7), Oldenstadt (4), and Dominic Coffman (2) also scored, with Jonathan Valenzuela, William Davidson, Chase Anderson, and Ryan Blouin seeing floor time.

Liam Millenaar led MVC with 23 points, with Billy DeJong knocking down 18 in support.

Make the net jump, all night long

We’re at 1,420 points and counting.

Coupeville High School basketball players are making the net jump as the season rolls along, and we’re pretty sure we know who tallied each of those points.

Logan Downes is leading the way, dropping 24.4 points a game at the varsity level, but a couple of JV girls made big moves this past week.

Madison McMillan went off for a season-high 23 in a home win over Orcas Island, while Carlota Marcos-Cabrillo recorded 19 points across her first two games on the CHS hardwood.

With a busy week ahead — games Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday — all the Wolves have a chance to kick their numbers to a new level.

Big effort, no breaks

Sometimes you get the breaks, and sometimes you don’t.

For the Coupeville High School boys soccer squad, Tuesday’s trip to Marysville was one of those days when the sports gods chose not to smile on the Wolves.

Despite getting strong play from across the roster, CHS came up on the short end of a 3-2 game with host Grace Academy.

The loss drops the Wolves to 1-2 in Northwest 2B/1B League play, 3-5 overall.

“Three mistakes at the wrong time in the wrong area…,” said Coupeville coach Robert Wood.

“That’s what happens.”

Even with his team coming out on the short end of the score, Wood was largely pleased with the play he saw from his booters.

“Nick Guay was an excellent second half goalkeeper,” Wood said. “And we had very good, coordinated, disciplined play most of the day from everyone.”

Coupeville’s scores came from Preston Epp and Cole White, who both notched their third goals of the season.

Epp redirected a ball in the game’s 30th minute, taking advantage of a corner kick which bounced around and then came out to him.

For White, he put some pizazz on his goal, charging a high pass from deep in Coupeville’s end of the field, then using his noggin to flick the ball past the Grace Academy netminder, all while having a defender draped all over him.

The Wolves get back at it this Friday, heading back off of Whidbey one more time.

Coupeville’s destination is Friday Harbor, where they’ll get a rematch with a state title contender they shocked 3-1 earlier in the season.

“Kids played amazing”

They’re making inroads.

Playing in the most competitive 2B/1B league in the state, the Coupeville High School boys soccer squad is proving it can hang with the big dogs.

The Wolves have already knocked off Friday Harbor, which finished 4th at state last season, and battled hard with defending state champ Orcas Island in a narrow loss.

Saturday, facing off with Mount Vernon Christian, one of four Northwest 2B/1B League schools to make last year’s big dance, Coupeville held the lead midway through the game, but couldn’t quite topple the Hurricanes.

Falling 4-2 on their home pitch, the Wolves slip to 1-1 in league play, 3-4 overall.

“Kids played amazing against a strong opponent,” said CHS coach Robert Wood. “Amazing fight the entire second half.”

Preston Epp leads the charge.

MVC struck first, but the Wolves roared from behind to reclaim the lead thanks to goals from Aidan Wilson and Cole White.

Wilson’s goal, which was unassisted, was his team-leading sixth of the season, and the ninth for his prep career.

White, with a nice setup from Hank Milnes, tallied his second score of the campaign, and his third all-time.

MVC attacked relentlessly, however, reclaiming the lead, then tacking on an insurance goal in the second half.

Coupeville hits the road twice next week, heading to Grace Academy Tuesday, before getting a rematch Oct. 14 with Friday Harbor.

Strong effort, stronger foe

There’s a reason Orcas Island is the defending 2B/1B state boys soccer champs.

The Vikings are good.

Orcas proved as much Tuesday, using a very-precise style of play to hold off a scrappy Coupeville squad.

Toppling the Wolves 5-2 at Mickey Clark Field, the Vikings improve to 4-1 on the season, while CHS falls to 2-3.

But while the game involved two Northwest 2B/1B League rivals, it won’t go into the books as a conference tilt.

Only the final eight games of the season, which starts with Coupeville travelling to play Cedar Park Christian-Lynnwood Oct. 4, count as “league games” and decide playoff seeding.

The first five games for the Wolves, while all against NWL schools, are viewed as non-conference bouts for accounting purposes.

Which didn’t mean Coupeville didn’t want to upend the reigning champs, because they did.

Coming off an epic upset of Friday Harbor — the only team to topple Orcas this season — the Wolves were hoping to make it a two-fer.

It wasn’t to be, however, as the Vikings put on a clinic in the first half, controlling both sides of the field with a precise short passing attack, the ball skipping from player to player.

Coupeville’s defense, which was missing two key players in Andrew Williams and Alex Smith, held up well, but the Vikings took advantage of any small cracks, striking like cobras.

Orcas scored first off of a gorgeous header, set up by a (wait for it) precise pass which slipped between defenders and found a waiting noggin.

The Vikings notched two goals in the first seven minutes, before the teams played a half hour of scoreless ball marked by big defensive plays from both backlines.

The game looked like it would remain close heading to the break, but Orcas stung the Wolves with two more scores in the final three minutes of the half to stretch things out.

Even down four goals, Coupeville fought back valiantly.

Cole White brought Wolf fans to their feet with a great run 12 minutes into the second half.

Corralling a pass from Aidan Wilson, who flipped the ball out in front of the defense, White chased the bouncing orb down, juked a defender out of his shoes, then slapped home his first goal of the season.

Five minutes later, it was Wilson’s turn to net a score, banging home his team-leading fifth goal off of an assist from Preston Epp.

Drawing the goalie out of the net, Wilson rumbled past the out-of-place netminder and buried the ball into the corner of the net with a flick of his lethal foot.

Coupeville had all the momentum at that point, and 22 minutes to pull off a miracle, but Orcas closed the game like a team built to handle pressure.

The Vikings kept the ball away from the Wolves, ran time down, then added an insurance goal in stoppage time as the exclamation point on the night.

While his team lost, Coupeville coach Robert Wood liked the effort put together by his short-handed team against a very-strong program.

“Orcas knows how to shoot, how to move, and how to be aggressive when it counts,” he said.

“They put on a clinic of possession and quick ball movement,” Wood added. “Really fun game. Very impressive response by our team to their skills.”

Rumble, young men, rumble.
