Young rider a rising star

A mom and a daughter, enjoying the equestrian life.

Talk about making a great first impression.

Coupeville 5th grader Abbie Moss burst onto the scene this weekend, working with her horse Blu to bring home six ribbons from her first reining and ranch riding show.

Competing in Lynden with the Northwest Reining Association, the 11-year-old proved to be a natural, taking four 1st place ribbons, as well as two 2nd place awards for reining and ranch rail.

“I win, son, I win.”

Moss has been riding casually for several years, and recently made the transition to competitive events.

Blu, a 12-year-old American Quarter Horse gelding out of Chocolate Chic Olena and Nu Cash Lass, joined the family last October.

Since then, he and his new favorite girl have been inseparable.

“When Abbie isn’t practicing or showing, she rides him around the farm and on trails every chance she gets,” said mom Kristy.

Riding into a bright future.

Helm sisters burn up the track

Weekends are for driving fast.

Coupeville’s Finley and Scotlyn Helm continue to slam the pedal through the metal as members of the Washington Quarter Midget Association.

With their little brother only a few days away from strapping himself into a car and hitting the gas, the duo continues to shine brightly in the racing world.

They’re building a dynasty here, one lap at a time.

Howl and spike, young Wolves

Unleash your best spike!

Coupeville Elementary School students in grades 3-5 are invited to participate in Wolf Pup volleyball.

A series of fun practices for spikers of all skill levels, the event is run by high school coaches and athletes, with money benefitting the CHS volleyball program.

Athletes can attend any number of the 14 practices offered, as Wolf coaches are very accommodating with working with players who may be juggling multiple activities.

Scotlyn Helm rips up the racetrack

#77 is back in action, and still punchin’ the pedal through the metal.

Coupeville Elementary student Scotlyn Helm, who has torn up the racetrack since joining the Washington Quarter Midget Association, returned to action this weekend.

This time around, though, she participated in her first dirt track events, after previously racing on harder surfaces.

Scotlyn is aiming at racing again in January, which should give dad Jerry some time to clean off all the dirt from her speedy ride.

“I feel the need … the need for speed.”

Ready to rumble.

School Board Director resigns

Coupeville students are losing a tireless advocate.

Glenda Merwine, who has been on the school board since 2013, is leaving a year before her term ends.

Her resignation was tendered at Monday’s board meeting and is effective Dec. 1.

Merwine’s replacement, when named, will serve out her term, with the position up for election in 2023.

Initially appointed to replace the departing Carol Bishop in Jan. 2013, Merwine formerly served as the Coupeville Elementary School principal and the district’s Director of Student Learning.

A leadership coach for the Association of Washington School Principals, she also supervises student teachers for Seattle Pacific University and the University of Phoenix.

Merwine is the board’s current Vice President.
