Joey Lippo

The hired guns are having a noticable impact.

Powered by five Coupeville Middle School players who travel up to the big city for games, the Oak Harbor Babe Ruth baseball squad continues to scorch opponents this spring.

The latest foe to face the fury of the Wolf-assisted Wildcats was Anacortes, which got itself blitzed 18-1.

Coupeville hurlers Joey Lippo and Jake Pease combined with Oak Harbor’s Thomas Anderson to scatter just three hits, while the ‘Cat offense went bonkers, hitting around in three of the five innings played.

Oak Harbor has three games left to play before opening the district playoffs against Burlington.

They beat that squad 7-6 in their only meeting of the season, though coaches on both sides played it fairly close to the vest, since they already knew about the looming postseason match-up.

Lippo and Pease are joined on the ‘Cat team by fellow CMS athletes Gabe Eck, Hunter Smith and Ty Eck.

Five men strong and kickin’ booty.

Fueled by their Coupeville Middle School players, who can now be hailed as the Fab Five, the Oak Harbor Babe Ruth baseball squad is on a hot streak as the playoffs near.

The Wildcats, who feature CMS stars Joey Lippo, Hunter Smith, Ty Eck, Gabe Eck and newcomer Jake Pease, have won four straight and qualified for the district playoffs.

After slipping past Anacortes 9-7, the ‘Cats pounded Concrete 14-3 and 12-1. Oak Harbor then edged Burlington 7-6 to keep the streak alive.

While most of the roster is Oak Town-based, the Coupeville five are making an impact.

Lippo is a fixture behind the plate and he and Smith are swinging hot bats.

Meanwhile, the speed demon Eck bothers chip in wherever they play, with Ty seeing mound duty against Burlington while Gabe patrolled center field.

Katrina

Written by Joe Lippo.

Recently, Ben Etzell threw a very rare no-hitter for Coupeville High School.

This gave all the Wolf players a mental boost, and made Ben “King of the Hill” (mound?).

Who knew he would have company all the way up there so soon?

According to her parents, CMS 8th grader Katrina McGranahan has been in a bit of a slump lately.

I don’t know exactly what that entails (her batting average probably dropped below .900 or something like that), but in her latest game with the CWLL Juniors Venom, she broke that slump.

Actually, she shattered it.

Tabbed as the starting pitcher for the 3-0 Venom, she immediately started sitting Oak Harbor Mariner batters down while lowering the average temperature at the ball park by fanning all but one batter in the first three innings.

The fourth inning got slightly out of control with a few walks and some passed balls that allowed the Mariners to score three. But that was it.

No hits.

Of the 15 outs, 11 were by strikeout.

The four Oak Harbor batters that were lucky enough make contact with the ball were discouraged to learn that McGranahan is not the only girl on the Venom that can play ball.

First baseman Mikayla El-frank snared a foul ball and then a ball that came right up the first base line for outs.

Second baseman Bella Northup scooped a roller that came her way for the force at first, and McGranahan helped her own cause by grabbing a ball that came straight back to her, also for the out at first.

Venom batters were hot from the first pitch, with Veronica Crownover (RBI) and Hope Lodell (single, RBI) making solid contact and driving in runs.

Lauren Rose (single, double) drove in four RBI, second only to McGranahan’s six.

Tamika Nastali (single), Heather Nastali (single), Emily Licence (single) and Sarah Wright (single, triple) contributed to the hit parade.

Outstanding base running also helped them rack up the runs.

In the bottom of the fifth, the score was 12-3 in favor of the Venom, with one run needed to end the game by 10-run rule.

McGranahan came to the plate with the bases loaded.

The Oak Harbor pitchers’ offering was hit to deep center, taking two hops and hitting the fence. It was enough for McGranahan to circle the bases, sealing her complete game no-hitter, winning the game 16-3 and getting the grand slam to boot.

“We are playing good softball and more importantly we are playing as a team,” said Venom coach Kevin McGranahan. “Coach Ron Wright and I have been teaching the team concept for the last four years and the girls have grasped it and are now playing as one.

Katrina had a great game but those games are not possible without the other eight girls on the field and all the players playing as a team,” he added. “Next game I am sure it will be a different girl or girls coming through and that is the beauty of coaching, when you see the girls playing together, having fun and picking each other up.

“We expect great things out of these girls in the future. Enjoy the show!”

The next time I say no to an offer of free cookies will be the first time.

Nothing makes me quite as excited to write about an upcoming dance for Coupeville Middle School students as an offer to be paid off in cookies by the event’s organizer.

I am easy, and Ms. Julia Felici knows it, apparently.

So, to fulfill my contract, here’s the info you need and want to know if you are a seventh or eighth grader at CMS or the parent of one who wants them out of the house for a few hours, doing something productive.

When: Saturday, March 29.

Where: Coupeville Nordic Lodge (63 Jacobs Road)

Time: 7-9 PM

Cost: $3.00 (very reasonable)

Open to: CMS students

Put on by: Julia Felici, CHS senior and all-around upstanding citizen (I vouch for her), as part of her community service work with The International Order of the Rainbow for Girls.

Fun facts about Ms. Felici — she got the biggest ovation of the 2012-2013 basketball season when, late in the year, she suddenly broke out moves no one knew she had and hit a dazzling jumper, and her dad, Rick, is a highly-respected Island County cop.

Plus, her mom, Monica, is one of my go-to ladies when it comes to getting free hamburgers from the concession stand ladies at CHS sports events.

So, this is no fly-by-night event organizer. This is a young woman with roots in the community, CMS parents.

Song requests: Can be made by leaving comments at the event’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/events/435022503298515/
