Do you smell smoke? Cause someone is on fire!

Racing past host Mount Vernon Christian 58-47 Saturday, the Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball squad captured its fifth win in its last six games.

Using a mix of stellar defense (the Wolves zipped away with 20 steals) and electrifying long-range shooting (eight three-balls hit nothing but the bottom of the net), CHS surged to 5-6 on the season.

“The recent emergence of the long ball has given our offense a healthy jolt of energy,” said Wolf coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh. “We led wire to wire.

“These kids are playing for one another, with 100% conviction and maximum effort and having fun doing it,” he added. “I love to watch them play.”

Coupeville spread the offense around, with DeAndre Mitchell surging to the front of the pack with an 18-point, seven rebound, seven steal, two blocked shot performance.

Half of Mitchell’s points came via the long ball, as the junior rained down three treys.

Hunter Smith and Brian Shank both dropped in a pair of three-point bombs, while Luke Merriman chipped in with one of his own.

Smith hit for 10 points, while Gabe Wynn (8), Dante Mitchell (7), Shank (6), Desmond Bell (4), Merriman (3) and Hunter Downes (2) rounded out the offensive explosion.

Smith made off with six steals while Dante Mitchell nabbed four.

Merriman and Smith each had three assists, with Wynn hauling in four boards.

The young Wolves will put their three-game winning streak on the line Wednesday, Jan. 21 with a home game against Chimacum.

The Coupeville JV is 2-0 in Olympic League play entering that contest, with wins over Klahowya and Port Townsend.

DeAndre Mitchell

You can’t stop DeAndre Mitchell, and forget about containing him.

Just ask Port Townsend, which may have nightmares about the Coupeville High School junior for days.

No matter what the host Redhawks threw at him Tuesday night, Mitchell had an answer, pouring in 26 points — most by any CHS player, boy or girl, this season — sparking the Wolf JV boys to their third win in their last four games.

The young guns, now 3-6 overall after the 44-26 victory, are also a flawless 2-0 in the 1A Olympic League, having already beaten Klahowya.

“The players have bought into the idea of winning a championship, even though we don’t get anything for it on JV other than pride,” said Wolf coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh. “We sit at 2-0 in our conference and the boys can’t wait to play another conference game.

“I’m eager to see where we go from here,” he added. “We have shown growth and I see signs of maturity. It’s time to turn it up and go take what we want!”

Mitchell contributed on both sides of the ball, hauling in six boards and making off with three steals.

Giving him the support he needed, the Wolves got scoring from six other players, led by freshmen Hunter Smith and Joey Lippo with four apiece.

Ethan Spark (3), Desmond Bell (3), Dante Mitchell (2) and Gabe Wynn (2) rounded out the Coupeville attack.

Dante Mitchell edged out his twin brother for the team lead in rebounding, snatching seven boards, while Brian Shank got his hands on three caroms.

Lippo had three steals and two blocked shots.

Dante Mitchell had a very good trip.

When the Coupeville High School basketball teams went to Orcas Island Friday, it made for an all-day and all-night adventure.

But, with four wins in four games, the Wolves were rewarded for spending huge chunks of time traveling to the middle of nowhere.

And while nearly all the CHS players put up solid performances once they were on the tiny Island, few could match Mitchell.

Throwing down 20 points, snatching eight rebounds and handing out three assists, the Wolf junior paced the JV boys’ to their second win of the season, a start-to-finish 53-44 romp.

Now 2-5 on the season heading into the Christmas break, the young Wolves are starting to jell.

“They played pretty inspired,” said Coupeville coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh. “Had the lead the whole game. Got good minutes off the bench.

“We’re starting to come together.”

Freshman Hunter Smith tallied 10 points in support of Mitchell’s offensive explosion, while DeAndre Mitchell (9), Joey Lippo (6), Desmond Bell (4) and Brian Shank (2) rounded out the attack.

DeAndre Mitchell hauled in six boards, with Lippo, Bell and Shank each collecting four.

Smith added three boards and a team-high four assists.

Two days, four birthdays, many happy wishes.

Today and tomorrow mark the birth of a huge chunk of Coupeville High School’s athletic future (and present).

Sunday gave us twin basketball wonders Dante and DeAndre Mitchell, as well as Wolf cheerleader Jessica Bester. Monday brings with it the big day of football/basketball/baseball sensation Clay Reilly.

There’s actually another Wolf birthday on Monday, but we’re saving that one for her own article. Tune in Monday to see why.

For now, though, we honor this foursome, who have all made a quick impact in the red and black.

The Mitchell brothers, younger siblings of former Wolf dunk king Anthony Bergeron, were breakout players for the CHS boys’ JV hoops squad last season.

If they follow in the footsteps of Bergeron, who took a huge leap between his first and second seasons at Coupeville, expect the duo to set the nets on fire this year.

Bester joined the Wolf cheer squad as a freshman this year.

The cousin of fellow CHS cheerleader Ciera St Onge, she immediately fit in and shows great promise in the years to come.

Reilly, younger brother of lights-out basketball gunner Amanda Fabrizi, is an athlete for all seasons, and a talented one at that.

Whether flying around the gridiron, the hard-court or the diamond, where he saw varsity playing time last year as a freshman, he brings the same inner drive and flair for the dramatic that marked his sister’s stellar career.

Combined, the four represent the exciting future of Wolf sports.

To all of them, good luck, enjoy your big day, and continue to kick butt and take names.
