By the time they were done, there were very few non-seniors left on the bench.

10 of the 12 guys who saw action for Coupeville in Tuesday’s varsity boys’ basketball game are 12th graders, and all of them were honored before tip-off on Senior Night.

Their departure will leave a huge hole in the program, with only current sophomore Hunter Smith and junior Gabe Wynn not scheduled to exit in the spring.

While this was their final regular season home game, the Wolf seniors still have two more road trips, then will return home for a playoff game.

Until then, a look at the biggest senior class in many a year, courtesy travelin’ photo man John Fisken.

Desmond Bell

Desmond Bell follows suit on Tuesday.

Two guys, two different sports, two birthdays over two days, too awesome.

Former Coupeville High School soccer star Ryan Freeman, who celebrates his cake day today, and current CHS hoopster Desmond Bell, who hits his milestone Tuesday, have both had a considerable impact on Wolf Nation.

Freeman gets his props for running the soccer pitch like a racehorse, slicin’ ‘n dicin’ and getting his feet on more than his share of loose balls.

Helping to set up big-time goal scorers Abraham Leyva and Sebastian Davis last season, he was one of those unsung players that are so valuable to a successful squad.

One of nine seniors who departed after last spring, Freeman may be gone from the CHS hallways, but he’s far from forgotten.

Bell is still striding across campus and about to kick off his senior year of basketball tonight, when the Wolves open a new season at Meridian.

As a junior, Desmond was one of the more explosive players on the Wolf JV, a little raw, but capable of pulling off big exploits when everything clicked together.

Now, he’s made the jump to varsity, where his quickness and hops should help make the Wolves a hard-attacking team.

As the duo mark their birthdays, we just want to take a moment here at Coupeville Sports to say thank you, for what you’ve done in the past.

Both of you provided plenty of things to write about, and I greatly appreciate it.

Now go celebrate and keep on blazing the same trail of success you’ve been following so far.

Happy birthday, guys!

Desmond Bell

Desmond Bell fights for rebounding position.

It was a tale of two halves.

The first half, not so great. The second, much, much better.

In the end, one half couldn’t salvage another, as the Coupeville High School JV boys’ hoops squad fell 74-42 to visiting Chimacum Friday.

Still, even in a loss (which dropped the young guns to 7-10 overall, 4-4 in Olympic League play), there were enough positives to give Wolf coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh hope.

“In the second half we came out and pressed the whole time. I saw a lot of good things happen,” he said. “Kids flying around and forcing turnovers. Playing with the drive and intensity that we ask for.

“They flew around on defense. It was fun to watch.”

Unfortunately, the Wolves had built a large hole for themselves after a first half in which they came out flat.

Further complicating things, the refs went crazy, having the two teams combine for a staggering 84 free throw attempts.

That prevented Coupeville from maintaining any sense of rhythm and made the comeback trail a harder one.

Hunter Smith paced the Wolves with 13 points and four rebounds, while DeAndre Mitchell pumped in 11 points and snatched four boards.

Gabe Wynn dropped in seven, snagged two boards and made off with three steals.

The Wolf JV wraps its season Monday at home against Klahowya and Van Velkinburgh wants to see a strong finish.

“We have one game left and I’m looking to close the JV season on a high note.”

Desmond Bell

“I’m liking the energy we are getting from the bench. Guys are excited to play and it shows.”

While his squad lost Wednesday in a game that was scheduled at the last second, Coupeville High School JV boys’ basketball coach Dustin Van Velkinburgh can see the positives.

“We are beginning to figure some things out,” he said. “Just need to find our stride earlier in games. At points this season, when we click and play well together, as we are capable of, we have been scary.”

The Wolves cut a 21-point deficit to six at one point against visiting Friday Harbor, but also had stretches that were less pleasant.

A slow start and a bad finish combined to send CHS to a 61-39 loss.

The game was a late pick-up for the young Wolves (now 1-5), who had an opening on their schedule since an earlier varsity opponent, Darrington, didn’t have a second team.

Friday Harbor’s two girls’ teams were already scheduled to come to Whidbey, so the Wolverine JV boys hitched a ride with them.

With little time to plan for the game, Coupeville came out cold.

One of the team’s leading scorers, DeAndre Mitchell, got in early foul trouble and spent much of the first half attached to the bench.

In his place, the Wolves got a big boost from freshman Hunter Downes, who “came in and gave us great energy off the bench.”

With Downes on the floor, Coupeville cut a 9-1 deficit to 13-8 by the end of the first quarter.

Hunter Smith nailed a running floater a tick before the buzzer to send his squad into the opening break on a positive note.

Unfortunately, things soured quickly as the Wolves went on a tear of missed layups, repeatedly shooting themselves in the foot after getting solid looks at the basket.

Things worsened as CHS came out of the halftime break with little spark, letting Friday Harbor stretch out its lead past the 20-point barrier.

After a Van Velkinburgh timeout, the Wolves finally seemed to wake up.

Desmond Bell stroked a three-point bomb from the corner to kick things off and Coupeville immediately stole the in-bounds pass on the next play, scoring another quick bucket.

The Wolves cut their deficit back to six, but Friday Harbor survived, nailing a trey to blunt the run.

Down by 10 with 90 seconds to play, Coupeville cleared its bench and the visitors closed the game on a 12-0 run.

Smith paced the Wolves with 14 points, four rebounds, three steals and three assists, while Bell racked up nine points, four boards and two steals.

When he was able to stay on the court, DeAndre Mitchell was effective, pumping in eight points and snatching seven boards.

Dante Mitchell (five points, six boards), Brian Shank (one point, six boards) and Downes (two points, three boards and “countless floor burns”) all chipped in, as well.
